Prologue
With each beat of my heart, I felt myself sink closer into death. The blood slowly dripping out of my body masked by the insurmountable pain that made me feel on fire while my bones kept trying to break over and over.
What was happening to me? Was this death that I was welcoming?
Why did I feel like something was trying to claw its way out of me?
I stared up at the night sky and saw the striking blood moon casting its light down on me. In that moment I felt peace, more so relief that this pain would be over soon. That the last thing I would see would be the bright shining stars that surrounded the moon as they danced across the sky, illuminating the light amongst the dark.
What irony that was.
For each second that passed by I was nearing closer to that darkness the stars so desperately tried to turn into light. But, my life, my light was fading succumbing to the dark.
I heard the howls from a distance. More were coming for me.
I screamed out, my back arching feeling every bone in my spine break with excruciating pain. I willed my body to fight with whatever strength that was left inside of me. I did not want this to be my story, for this moment to be my end.
I sunk my fingers into the earth, grasping at a mix of dirt and blood-soaked grass to hold onto anything to ground me to stay in this life. The rumbling through the earth was steady reminding me that I was at my most vulnerable to whatever it was that was coming again.
I closed my eyes to think of them.
My mothers. Hoping that someone else than them would find me in this state and spare them that fate.
I heard a loud growl as my eyes sprang open and looked at what I was sure to be my ending.
A beautiful massive black wolf with golden eyes stared back at me, slowly approaching my dying body.
I blinked and for a second, I thought I was already dead.
Kneeling before me was the most stunning man I had ever seen staring down at me with such captivating blue eyes that I could not look away as if my gaze was his hostage. I could not look away no matter how scared I was.
Where was the black wolf?
I breathed in sharply as the pain shook my body once more reminding me that I was still alive.
A rough, but the softest comforting hand cupped my face turning it to make me look at him. The simple caress of his thumb burned a fiery blaze on my cold skin igniting an ember within my heart so strongly I thought it was going to burst.
“Stay with me, my mate.” His intense blue eyes clouded over with concern dancing with the flecks of gold among them. I tried to keep my focus on those blue sparkling orbs, knowing that they were my reminder that I was still here, still alive.
I could not fight the urge to go to sleep no matter the innate pull I felt towards this man. I questioned that he even was human.
“I’ve got you, mate.” Were the last words I heard before my body welcomed the darkness and my eyes fluttered closed.
