On the Run

Damon POV:

“HE’S DEAD! ALPHA GORDY IS DEAD!”

I was so fucking tired of being tied to trees and chair legs, made to beg for scraps and do parlor tricks—forced to stay in my wolf form all because I had been adopted into the Orion Clan.

It was a pathetic life—a hard life. Gordy was a complete asshole, but my mother came into money when my father died and he took her as his Luna when I was eight years old.

Two years later, my mother was dead—having fallen off a cliff.

“Fallen.”

Sure, I didn’t believe that then or when I finally killed the son of a bitch.

I ran like hell through the woods, only shifting when I had to—eating whatever I coul find—knowing I had to make my way out of the Dark Moon territories so I could find my family.

My real family.

I was a fugitive, though, and destined to have to pay some sort of consequences.

I had to get stronger. I had to wait out my transition somewhere secluded.

Then, I’d create my own pack and take them all down.

Jemimah POV:

“Get your ass back in that house!”

I swift hit to the back of my head caused me to fumble to the ground.

Why did they keep doing this to me? I was born a runt and I was treated that way since birth.

They’d kicked me out of the pack early—I was probably ten—and sent to live with my godparents who hated me even more than my own folks did.

I was tiny—I couldn’t fight. I’d no idea why I was even alive, but I kept going. I kept trying to prove myself. I wanted so badly to be loved, to be accepted. I’d no one to turn to, people hated me—my own pack hated me and for what reason?

“What did I do?!” I cried as Kevin hit me again and again until I suddenly blacked out.

Damon POV:

I didn’t need this shit.

Who was this girl? Where did she come from?

I had found her floating in the ravine, a head wound threatening to kill her.

She roused after a few days of being with me. I’d found a small, well-insulated shack on the edge of the county, thankful that my scent was not going to be detected until I turned 19.

I had a few weeks so I could drop this girl off wherever she needed to go.

“Hey..” I stroked her cheek as her pretty violet eyes fluttered open. At first she looked content and then she started thrashing around. I held her down, the tiny little thing that she was.

“Wh-where am I?”

“W-who are you?”

“Name’s Damon.” I said, still holding her down. I was much bigger than this little lady, “We’re safe in the woods. I found you floating in the ravine with a head injury. Do you recall anything before your accident?”

She looked confused.

“I-I don’t know..” she shook her head, cringing at the action, “I,-”

“Your ID says your name is Jemimah.”

She frowned and smiled.

“I think I remember that. Yes, Jemimah Winters.”

“Any idea where you got this wound?”

“No...”

Jemimah POV

I’d no idea. I knew my name. I knew I was a wolf. I knew I was unloved, but who was this huge man in my face?

Damon.

“Are you going to take me back to wherever I came from?” I asked, “What if they hurt me there?”

Damon looked conflicted.

“I can’t have you tagging along with me. You’ll weigh me down.”

“I promise not to! I’ll do whatever you want!”

I don’t know why I was pleading, but he seemed to take mercy on me and smiled.

“Damon Dixon,” he said, shaking my hand, “I’ve got some soup going if you’re up to eating.”

“Yes, please...” I smiled and settled back into the small cot.

Damon had to be better than where I’d come from, but I had sinking feeling nothing was going to be easy—not for the two of us anyway.
