Chapter 1
Something about this town doesn’t sit right with me. I’m not sure what it is but it feels strange. Outside, there aren’t many people; you would’ve thought on a warm day like today people would be going on walks around the area but no, not a single person in sight.
Today is the end of my first week here and I start school tomorrow so I am determined to enjoy my final day of freedom. I was planning on going for a walk down the beach in the hope of finding a girl my age who goes to my new school. My mum then told me that she and Dad were planning on going down anyway so now stuck with them. Great!
To my surprise, the beach was deserted! I sort of enjoyed sitting and reading on the fine, golden sand quietly but then it also felt strange. There was us, a youngish family and a group of teenagers a couple of years older than me I reckon and apart from a few more people further up the beach that was it. “It's so lovely and peaceful,” Dad said with a wide grin on his face. “Too peaceful for my taste, way too quiet,” I replied, “Why is nobody here on a bright day like today?”
We headed up the road when the tide edged closer to us and bought some famous ‘Whitby scampi and chips’. The majority of the shops in that small, hidden away street were closed. Some even had a board over one of the windows!
After a while, my mum started complaining about the sand getting in her eyes and frankly, I think Dad and I also had had enough. The car drive home was a breeze! Barely any cars on the road which meant absolutely no traffic.
I chose to turn on the TV but the screen kept on freezing and buffering which annoyed me because I was watching my favourite program (TVD of course). There’s another frustrating thing about this area: no signal, which isn’t great as a very nearly 17-year-old girl going into her final year at a new school with zero friends who go to said school.
Just got back from the local one-stop shop, it was so, so weird. It was quite late; sometime around 10. I had just left the shop when I could’ve sworn I saw something odd in the corner of my eye. It might have been a shadow or something but then a little while after I heard a faint scream, I swear I did!
