Chapter 1 : The Hacker

Zara typed furiously on her keyboard, her eyes fixed on the screen. She was in her small apartment, hidden in the outskirts of the city. The walls were covered with posters of banned artists, writers, and musicians. A pair of headphones blocked out the noise of the sirens and helicopters outside. She was listening to an illegal radio station that played underground music and rebel messages.

She was hacking into the Dream Zone, the virtual reality network that connected millions of people around the world. The Dream Zone was supposed to be a place where people could escape their dull and oppressive lives and experience their fantasies and memories. But it was also a tool for the Ministry of Truth, the totalitarian regime that ruled the world with an iron fist. The Ministry used the Dream Zone to monitor and manipulate people’s minds, to feed them propaganda and lies, to erase their history and culture, to suppress their creativity and imagination.

Zara was not like most people. She had a rare ability: she could dream without using the Dream Zone. She could also enter other people’s dreams and alter them. She used her skills to help the Resistance, a secret organization that fought against the Ministry. She hacked into the Dream Zone and rescued people who were trapped in nightmares or brainwashed by the Ministry. She also planted seeds of doubt and rebellion in their minds, hoping to awaken them from their slumber.

She had a code name: Zee. She was known as one of the best hackers in the Resistance. But she also had a price on her head. The Ministry wanted her captured or killed. They considered her a threat, a glitch, an anomaly.

She was currently working on a mission that involved a group of rebels who had been captured by the Ministry. They were being held in a secret facility, where they were subjected to torture and interrogation. The Ministry wanted to extract information from them, such as the location of the Resistance’s base and the identity of their leader.

Zara had managed to locate them in the Dream Zone. They were locked in a nightmare scenario, where they were chased by monstrous creatures and tormented by their worst fears. The Ministry had designed this nightmare to break their wills and force them to confess.

Zara had to free them before it was too late. She had to hack into their dreams and create a portal that would lead them out of the nightmare and into a safe zone. She had done this many times before, but it was always risky. She had to be careful not to alert the Ministry’s agents, who patrolled the Dream Zone and hunted down hackers like her.

She had already hacked into four of the rebels’ dreams and opened portals for them. She only had one more left: a man named Ravi. He was one of the leaders of the Resistance, and a friend of Zara’s.

She found his dream signal and connected to it. She entered his nightmare.

She saw him running in a dark forest, pursued by a giant spider with razor-sharp fangs and glowing red eyes. He was bleeding from several wounds on his body, and he looked terrified and exhausted.

Zara felt a surge of anger and pity for him. She hated the Ministry for what they did to him and others like him. She wanted to help him, to save him.

She concentrated and used her dream power to create a portal in front of him. It looked like a bright circle of light, floating in mid-air.

“Ravi! Over here!” she shouted, waving her hand.

Ravi saw her and recognized her voice. He ran towards her, dodging the spider’s attacks.

“Zee! Is that you?” he asked.

“Yes, it’s me! Hurry up! I’ve opened a portal for you! It will take you out of here!” she said.

“Thank you! Thank you so much!” he said.

He reached her and jumped through the portal with her.

They emerged in another scenario, one that Zara had created for them. It was a peaceful meadow, with green grass, blue sky, and colorful flowers. It was a stark contrast to the nightmare they had just escaped from.

They hugged each other, relieved and happy.

“Zee, you did it! You saved me!” Ravi said.

“Of course I did! I couldn’t let them have you!” Zara said.

“You’re amazing! You’re a hero!” Ravi said.

“No, I’m not. I’m just doing what I can,” Zara said modestly.

They looked at each other and smiled.

They were about to kiss when they heard a loud beep in their ears.

It was an alarm signal from Zara’s computer.

It meant that they had been detected by the Ministry.

They had to get out of there fast.

“Damn it! They’ve found us! We have to go!” Zara said.

“Okay! Okay! Let’s go!” Ravi said.

They ran towards another portal that Zara had prepared for them. It would take them back to the real world, where they would be safe.

They reached the portal and jumped through it.

They woke up in their respective locations, disconnected from the Dream Zone.

Zara was in her apartment, lying on her bed, surrounded by wires and devices.

Ravi was in a hidden bunker, lying on a couch, guarded by other rebels.

They both took off their headsets and breathed a sigh of relief.

They had made it.

They had escaped the Ministry’s clutches.

They had survived.

But they knew it was not over yet.

They knew they would have to fight again.

They knew they would have to dream again.

They knew they would have to see each other again.

They hoped they would.
