Chapter 1

Renae sat cross-legged on her bedroom floor, her phone in hand, lost in the endless scroll of TikTok. The rhythmic beats of the videos and the occasional laughter from her favorite creators filled the air. The vibrant colors of the app contrasted with the dimly lit room, creating a cozy atmosphere that made her forget about the outside world.

Suddenly, a loud, piercing alert echoed from the TV in the living room. Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized the ominous sound. It was the Purge announcement, a sound she had only associated with fiction, a plot device in movies she’d never imagined would breach the boundaries of her reality. She slowly rose from the floor, her eyes fixated on the bedroom door.

As she tiptoed down the hallway, the alert continued its eerie wail, growing louder with each step. The soft glow of the TV spilled into the corridor, casting long shadows that danced on the walls. Anxiety gripped her, and her mind raced with the implications of that ominous sound.

Entering the living room, she saw her mother on the couch, eyes glued to the television screen. The familiar face of the news anchor delivered the unsettling news about the commencement of the Purge – the one night where all crimes, even the most heinous, were allowed.

Her mother, unaware of her presence, continued watching with a mix of concern and curiosity. Renae’s gaze shifted from the TV to the woman seated beside her mother. It was the target of her dark intentions, the person she had harbored resentment for far too long.

The room seemed to close in around her as the reality of the situation sank in. This wasn’t a movie; it was happening in her own home. The choice to act or remain paralyzed with fear rested solely on her shoulders.

As the Purge announcement droned on, Renae’s conflicted emotions played out on her face. The desire for revenge battled with the fear of the consequences. The room was charged with tension, and the air felt thick with the weight of her decision.

In that moment, she had to confront the darkness within herself, a darkness that had been fueled by hatred and a longing for justice – a justice that, in the eyes of the Purge, was both legal and lethal.
