Chapter 1
Chapter 1 — Anna
I stared back at my reflection while the hard nape of the heel poked against my ankles, forming another bruise that was going to take forever to heal. The bunny costume was tight, clinging onto my skin as if it was latex, but it wasn’t. The only thing comfortable were the bunny ears that hung above my head without any worry.
“And then when I told him about the messages, he tells me he hasn’t sent any of them and that I am the one lying about it all. Who does that?” Taylor whined behind me while sliding into her own Halloween costume. “Fuck. I’m pissed now.”
I turned and heaved in a breath before watching her stuff her legs into a pair of stockings. She was going as a sexy female cop, all black clothing and a bright red lipstick over her mouth.
A single cop.
“Just chill. It’s going to be a massive party, I’m sure you’ll find someone else. Someone worthy of you!” I exclaimed with a smile hanging over my mouth.
Her costume was wild and she looked a lot better than she could ever imagine. Jack, her ex-boyfriend, was indeed going to miss having her. They had parted ways only a couple weeks ago but still had fights every other day. Taylor still couldn’t get over him and he desperately wanted her back after he was caught messaging other girls.
It was just the tip of the iceberg.
We both knew he had done more than just texting.
Of course.
“Exactly,” she stood up from her seat and walked over to the mirror on my side of the room when she was done putting her thigh-high stocking. “I shouldn’t let him ruin Halloween. It’s his loss. Not mine.” She said while soaking any tears that had formed in her eyes.
Her arm looped around mine and we grabbed our belongings before heading out of the dorm. Chaos was everywhere tonight. Halloween at the campus was wild and it was only my second one. The faces I once recognized were beyond recognizable. There was makeup, costumes and booze everywhere my gaze went.
“Will you get drunk with me and share my sorrows?” Taylor asked, still holding onto my hand.
We walked outside of our dorm building, heading straight to the campus where the party was being held. The moon was full and glowering above us with scattered clouds in the midnight sky. Hundreds of people, girls and boys, walked around us in their costumes, some of them already drunk and some of them puking their guts out in the grass and behind the bushes.
“I can’t drink,” I mumbled while recalling the last time I had actually drank. Blacked out. “Maybe a little.”
For days, I didn’t know where I was or what had happened. It was the first and the last time I ever drank and I never wanted to do it again. Taylor also remembered that night and nodded her head in agreement.
“Yeah, maybe you shouldn’t at all.”
“Okay. It wasn’t that bad!” I exclaimed at her reaction.
“You were missing for days. It was really bad. Can’t loose you again,” She tightened her hold around me as I was going to go around and have shots. “I even put a friendly tracker on your phone after you came back. It was stressful. For a moment, I thought you had died or someone had killed you.” She continued with worry in her tone.
There was nothing wrong with her worry. It was true, but it also had been a month since I was back and I had not touched alcohol since then. I tried to recall what happened during those days but nothing came to me.
I had forgotten everything. Whatever I knew, it came from Lucifer’s mouth.
“But I’m here and that’s never going to happen again! So let’s forget everything for one night and try to enjoy,” I said with excitement in my tone while heading straight into the party where music blasted from everywhere. “No mention of that night nor Jack!”
“Yes, please.”
When the thrill kicked in for Taylor, she came out of her shell and forced me with her other friends who I barely knew about. Two of them were girls, one of them dressed as an angel while the other one dressed as a devil. There was a boy with them, one I recognized from class.
He smiled at me and then winked while he was dressed as a skull, his face entirely painted with party makeup. It was done well.
“Come, have some drinks with us!” The angel said, dragging Taylor and me toward the tables where drinks were being poured.
Taylor glanced me and smiled widely, “I’m not stopping.”
“Don’t,” I said before glancing over my shoulder. “There’s something I’ve to get from the room. You start with the drinks. I’ll find you here in ten.” I pulled my hand away from the girl dressed as an angel and she dragged Taylor away with her and the other friends.
I breathed out a sigh of relief and began walking out from the way I had came in with Taylor. Music continued to blast into my ears. Girls and boys danced wildly as if it was the end of their lives. From the corner of my eyes, I could see more than drinks being passed around.
While it was fun, there was something else waiting for me this Halloween and it was going to be greater than all of this.
Lucifer.
