In a nutshell, positive psychology is the new science that studies what is “right” rather than “wrong” with people’s minds.
For the past century, psychology has been about defining illnesses and diagnosing patients — this is known as the medical model. “Psychology as usual” is and always will be an essential part of the scientific study of the human mind, but as of 2000, a new way of seeing psychology has emerged, and it is VERY exciting.
Positive psychology is not a branch of psych, but an altogether new way of looking at the field. It is not only for the ill; the theories in positive psych apply to anybody who is willing to improve themselves.
