Premonition
I’m running through the forest, pulled forward by something I don't understand.
I don't know his name when I start running. Only that something in the forest is calling me.
Not chasing me. Calling me.
My lungs burn as I weave between ancient trees, my bare feet barely touching the ground. I don’t know where I’m going – only that whatever is calling me won't be ignored.
It doesn’t feel like I’m running toward something new. It feels like I’m being drawn back to something I was always meant to find.
The forest feels awake as I run. The air hums. Leaves whisper. Shadows stretch and twist as I pass, bending toward me like they’re watching.
I'm moving too fast.
Faster than I should be able to.
Faster than any human should.
That’s when I realise I’m on all fours.
The thought barely has time to register before the ground betrays me. Something coils around my legs, yanking me down hard. I scream as gnarled roots erupt from the earth, wrapping around my arms and torso – pinning me to the forest floor.
They tighten, crushing the breath from my lungs.
Panic claws through me as my heart hammers wildly in my chest. I gasp, sucking in air that won’t come. My vision blurring at the edges.
This can’t be real. Wake up.
Before I can draw another breath, the forest stills.
A low growl rolls through the trees – deep and menacing, and far too close.
The ground trembles beneath me.
Heavy footsteps thunder closer – slow and deliberate. I strain to see through the gloom, fear and something unfamiliar tangling tightly in my chest.
Then I see them.
Mesmerizing eyes emerge from the shadows, glowing like molten amber – piercing through the darkness and locking onto me with terrifying precision. One glance is enough to know they belong to someone powerful. Someone more than human.
I can’t look away.
The moment our gazes meet, something ignites inside me. A sharp, electric pull snaps through my chest, stealing my breath. My fear dissolves into something far more dangerous – yearning and recognition.
It feels less like meeting a stranger and more like colliding with something my body has always known.
I don’t know how I know. Only that I do.
Whoever this is, he radiates power. Not human. Whatever he is, it feels like he's been waiting for me.
His presence presses down on me, heavy and undeniable, yet beneath it is an overwhelming sense of safety – of rightness.
As if I belong here.
With him.
He steps closer, just enough that moonlight brushes the edge of his form. I glimpse broad shoulders, strength carved through shadows – but my focus is drawn helplessly back to his eyes.
They burn with untamed intensity.
The pull between us tightens, coiling low in my stomach, setting my skin alight. Every instinct inside me screams to reach for him, to close the distance, to...
The breeze shifts, and he inhales sharply.
The sound sends a violent shiver through me. Goosebumps erupt across my skin as the air crackles, thick with tension. His gaze flicks over me, as if he’s seeing far more than he should.
His expression shifts – not just hunger, not just surprise, but something far more dangerous.
His lips part, as though he’s about to speak.
Whatever he’s about to say, I know with sudden, bone-deep certainty that it will change everything.
I hold my breath. Even the forest seems to lean in, waiting.
And then...
My chest constricts painfully as darkness crashes over me, dragging me under before I can hear what he has to say.
