In the beginning
I felt so lost as i walked down the halls of this new hospital. I have been so used to managing smaller facilties. There i was my own boss. Everyone called me doctor. I had grown tired of explaining to them i wasn’t. I was a Physician assistant. And was proud of who i was and my job. But in Villages in Ghana everyone in a white coat was a doctor. So i went with the flow. The job had been fun and challenging at the same time. I burried myself in it and it felt good. Montie had been a welcoming comnunity, though it had its own challenges. I had found an amazing church family there as well. But i couldn’t stay there forever. It was time to move on. I requested i be sent to another small facilt but here i was, walking down the hall of this huge hospital.
“Ewura Esi Benson i gues this is us now” i mumbled to myslef.
“Excuse me? “ the nurse who was taking me to the medical superintendent asked. I guess she thought i was talking to her
“Oh nothing” i answered
“I thought you were talking to me”
“No i wasnt sorry. I was mumbling to myself. But you have a nice facility here” i said
“Thank you ma”she replied as we stopped infront of an office door. “ This is his office ma’am, i’lld leave you here” she said to me
I thanked her and watched her leave. Then i gently knocked on the door.
The voice that responded to my knock sent shivers down my spine. It was deep but clear. You know the kind that women wish thier men had. I quickly regained my composure and walked into the office.
As i stepped in all i thought was wow, this really is Gods creation, my word. This was a manly man. But then i thought to myself i wasnt there to admire his good looks i was there cor a job. And nothing ever goes well with dating at work.
It was at this moment that i realised how fast the human brain can process nonsense. I couldn’t even hear him when he offered me a seat for the first time.
“Hello........ i said you could sit please” he said. Shoving me back into reality.
I took the seat facing him.
“How can i help you ma’am” he said so respectfully.
“Please i am the new PA that has been posted here, Ewura Esi Benson” i replied
“Oh okay, have you passed through HR? “ he asked
“Yes please they asked me to come here after, that is why i’m here please” i replied.
We talked a bit about my past experience and my expectations there. He was so respectful and nice. After that he sent me round the consulting rooms to introduce me to the doctors and PAs. The facility had three doctors( two males and one lady)and two PAs( one lady and one gentleman). They were very nice but i just assumed that they were just doing that because it was my first day. All the saime i smiled back. After that was done, We went to see the matron who also welcomed me and assured me that they were going to be one hundred percent supportive and ensure i enjoy my stay there.
After all introductions were done we went back into his office. He asked if i had family or any other obligations as well as any special days i needed as off days. I said no because well i had no life. I didnt tell him the second part. Just said it in my head. He told me to start the following week since it was already wednesday.
“Use the rest of the week to sertle down and look around the town” he said.
“Tha you so much” i answered. “Nice and handsome” i thought to myself and smiled. Thanked hima nd went to find my way back to my new home.
Throughout my cab ride i just had to chant to myself “he’s your boss, not going to work”. I just finished and laughed at myself. This was going yo be an interesting stay. And i was ready to enjoy every minute of it.
