Chapter 1
Melissa McCall was watching TV while her son Scott was at school, when someone knock on the door. She turned the TV off and went to open.
“Sheriff ?! What are you doing here ?” The young mother asked worried
“It's complicated. Don't worry, Scott and Stiles are fine. It's about Isaac Lahey.” Sheriff Stilinski explained
“ Is he okay ?” Melissa asked
“His father just got arrested, he killed his wife and his other son, Isaac manage to hide and he called us. He saw everything. And seeing the marked on his arms, his father hasn't been tender with him.” The Sheriff said
“Oh my God ! But how old is he ?” she wondered
“Same as Scott, he's 6 years old. Hum... To go back to what I wanted to ask you. I'd like to know if you could take care of him for a while, every foster in a 100 miles radius are full and he's got nowhere to go.” He asked nervously
Melissa open her mouth from surprise before shaking herself and answering.
“ Of course ! It's really no problem if it's ok with him.”
“Great ! Isaac's in the car. He refuse to talk to me, I think he must be scarred of me. Come on Melissa, follow me.” he said
The two of them headed to the car, Noah Stilinski, the Sheriff opened the car door. Melissa studied the little boy closely, his face look extremely thin, his big blue eyes showed the fear he was still feeling, his brown curly hair were messy and on his arms a lot of bruises could be seen, as for the rest of his body he was also incredibly thin. When Noah got closer to him, Isaac moved backward and he got his leg close to himself, hiding his face between his arms. Melissa kindly dismissed Noah to squat down in front of Isaac.
“Isaac ? I'm Melissa, you're safe now I swear.” She said with a sweet voice
Isaac slowly lifted his head up, the lady's voice was as soothing his mother's used to be, he didn't want to believe her, because every person who ever told him this in the past, had lied, but he had, at least for himself, to check out what she was saying. Isaac looked at the woman's face, she had long curly black hair and big soft brown eyes.
“Would you like to come and live with me ?” she asked
Isaac nodded and he got down the police car ignoring the hand she held and looking down. Melissa passed in front of the boy and got him inside the house. Isaac was looking around like a scarred mouse and Melissa didn't really know how to reassure him. Noah and the other deputy had left, leaving the woman to deal alone. She looked at the hour and realize it was already noon, Isaac must be hungry.
“Are you hungry Isaac ?” She wondered
After an hesitation, he, once again, nodded.
“What would you like to eat ? Do you have a favorite dish ?” Melissa smiled
“I don't know, I'm sorry.” He stammered
“It's okay don't worry. You coming with me to see what we could eat ?”
He nodded again. They walked toward the kitchen.
“Look, there's pizza ! Do you like it ?” Melissa exclaimed
“I... I can't eat tomatoes... I'm sorry, I'm sorry.” He chanted with tears in his eyes.
He let himself fall to the floor, brought his legs to his chest and his his head between his arms, while still apologizing. Melissa got down to face him.
“Isaac ! Isaac listen to me.” She asked
When he got quiet, she continued.
“You don't have to be sorry, all of this isn't you fault. I know that you are young but I am sure that you understand I ain't your father, I'll never hurt you. Everything's ok now.” The young woman explained
At this moment, Isaac had a reaction that surprised not only Melissa but himself as well, he ran in her arms. The young mother was at first caught off guard but she quickly got her mind back on track and wrapped her arms around the little boy. Isaac wasn't used to feel like this, a feeling of deep safety, as if as long as he was in her arms, nothing could happen to him. But trust wasn't that easy to gain, especially for him, this had been an instinct to act like this but the fear that she was lying to him was still here. They stayed like this for a few minutes until the boy stepped away.
“Do you like pasta ? I can make some if you want ?” Melissa said to change the subject, seeing that he was weirded out by what just happened
“Yes, I like this.” He shyly smiled
“Great !” The young woman said
Isaac stayed close to her in the kitchen and she started cooking. He was really quiet, Melissa wasn't used to this, usually when Scott was home, the place was all but quiet and it was even worst when Stiles Stilinski, Scott's best friend, was here. Speaking of, they were soon going to come home to eat as it was Wednesday.
“Isaac ?” She called
“Yes ?” The boy whispered
“I just want to warn you, that my son Scott and his friend Stiles are going to arrive. I'm sure they are going to like you, I just wanted to warn you that they are really loud and lively.” She giggled
“Okay.” Isaac answered
He barely had time to reply that the front door opened forcefully, hitting the wall in the process.
“Mom ! We're home !” A voice yelled
“I'm in the kitchen Scott.” Melissa replied calmly
When the two little boys came into the kitchen, Isaac had taken refuge behind Melissa. The first boy had tanned skin, fairly short brown hair and large brown eyes, while the second boy had very pale skin and black hair with green eyes. Noticing Isaac, both boys got a surprised look.
“Who's that Ma' ?”
“Scott, this is Isaac. He is in the same school as you. Isaac this is Scott and Stiles. Isaac is going to live with us for a while.” Melissa explained
“Cool !” Scott exclaimed
“So we're eating in 15 minutes boys.”
“ 'K, we'll go play then. You coming Isaac ?” Stiles asked
Isaac hesitated and looked at Melissa as if he was asking for permission. The young mother nodded and so Isaac started to walk toward the two other boys. And so they walk to the play room.
“What do you want to play to ?” Scott asked
“I don't know.” He answered, looking down
“Do you like cars ?” Stiles asked
“Yeah.” the boy smiled
“Cool ! There's a lot there ! We'll show ya !” Scott exclaimed
The 3 boys played with little cars for the whole fifteen minutes following. When Melissa called them to eat, all three of them arrived running and laughing, the meal happened to be really loud, Scott and Stiles were telling all about their morning and Isaac seemed compelled by their words. Melissa was glad to see that the boys got along alright. She really hoped this friendship could help Isaac.
“ 'Bout ya ? What'd ya do today Isaac ?” Scott asked in all innocence
The question seemed random but not to the little boy, every memories came back to his face, especially his father's face when this one had found him in the closet just before the police arrived. One strong survival instinct filled him and he got up and ran to hide in one of the numerous rooms.
“Isaac ?!” Melissa called, worried
“Did I do a nasty thing Mom ?” Scott asked, looking down
“No, baby, it's just that Isaac didn't have an easy life, it's why he's here, his dad did nasty things to him so the police took him. He surely doesn't like to talk about it.” Melissa explained
“I'm gonna say sorry...” Scott trailed
Melissa nodded ans watched as the boys climbed the stairs to find Isaac. Both boys got closer of the first door in front of them and they heard Isaac's cry behind it. They opened and saw Isaac curled up on himself in the corner of the bathroom.
“Isaac ?” Stiles called shyly
They squatted in front of him.
“I'm sorry I asked the question. I shouldn't have.” Scott apologized
Isaac sniffed and looked up.
“I's … It's okay... Ya … Ya did not know.” Isaac replied, his body shaking with tears
“It's not okay ! I'm sorry !” Scott said, he got closer to the boy and took him in a warm embrace.
Isaac tensed up immediately at Scott contact but he relaxed after a few seconds.
“I'm sorry I cry all the time. I suck !” Isaac breathed
“Of course not ! You don't suck ! Plus, you're family now !” Scott exclaimed
“Really ?” The boy became intrigued
“Sure you are !” Scott answered
*****
Twelve years later,
Isaac never really stood a chance with his real family, and by that he meant his biological father, it has been twelve years he was living with the Mccall family and he had to admit that everything was perfect, of course he still missed his real mother and brother but the pain of losing them had soften. In order to keep him with them, Melissa had adopted him when he was just a kid. Isaac was currently in class, lost in his thought when the principal got in the room.
“Isaac Mccall ?” He called
The boy lifted his head and frowned.
“Would you follow me ?”
Isaac took his stuff and followed the principal in the hallway, four other people were already here, Melissa, the Sheriff, Stiles and Scott. Isaac frowned again.
“What's happening ?” He worried
“You know how your father's in jail ? Well... Today he … escaped.” The Sheriff deadpanned
Isaac didn't realise what had been just said.
“What ?!” Stiles exclaimed “But how could he have escaped ?!”
“We don't really know for now... But we are pretty sure he'll come for you. I don't want to scare you but you had to be warned.” the Sheriff explained
Isaac was dizzy, the information was slowly creeping into his brain, his heart was beating too fast, he had to get out.
“I... I need some air.” He said slowly as he started to leave
He felt Scott was following him but he didn't care, he just wanted to get out, to escape. Even after twelve years of absence, his father still had such a strong hold on him. Once outside he continued walking to the forest in front of the school.
"Isaac! Wait for me!" Scott called
The boy stopped suddenly, surprising Scott who hit him. Isaac sighed a deep breath before he spoke.
"Why? What did I do to deserve this? Everything was perfect, for the last twelve years, everything was fine, but once again he has to come and ruin everything as usual," cried Isaac.
"It's not your fault, there's just some jealous people, and they want to spoil the joy of others and I think your father is like that," Scott explained.
Isaac sighed, once again. And when he looked up he noticed that the sky was already dark, they had gone deep into the forest. An hour later, the two boys arrived home.
"Mom! We're here!" Scott called out.
Isaac felt something was wrong, and when they arrived in the living room he understood that he was right, Melissa was tied to a chair with Isaac's father behind her, threatening her with a knife.
"You boys are just in time," Isaac's father laughed.
"Let her go! My mother didn't do anything," Scott exclaimed.
"But that's just it. Let's just say that dear Melissa will stay there to make sure you're going to behave yourself." he replied.
Meanwhile Isaac had managed to discreetly pull out his cell phone and he had dialed the police number, the sheriff's voice sounded very slightly, enough for Isaac to hear but not enough for his father to realize it.
"Let them go. And I”ll stay." abdicated Isaac
"You're crazy! I'm not going to leave you with that dangerous madman!" Scott took offense.
"I think it's a good idea," his father enthused.
He untied Melissa still threatening her and grabbed Isaac and tied him up instead of the young woman, a few minutes later Scott and Melissa found themselves locked out and Isaac inside with his father. His body was shaking with fear but he had to let nothing appear because if he did it it would be even worse.
"So, boy, are you ready?" he asked.
"To what?" asked Isaac, who was not sure he wanted to know the answer.
"To end up like your mother and brother," replied the older one with a sadistic smile on his face.
"You're just a monster!" Isaac cried out
"And you're a good-for-nothing! Look at you! You don't even have a real family, you're absolutely useless. They will never consider you as one of their own, you are nothing to them," his father said.
"Maybe, but they are everything to me. Kill me, go ahead, I don't care. If you do, you'll spend the rest of your life in prison and for good this time." Isaac admitted.
"And tell me, kid, what makes you think the police will catch me?" the older one mocked.
"Because we are already here." a voice intervened behind them.
Isaac turned his head to see who was there, and everything went by very quickly, he saw the sheriff behind him and a shot rang out, when Isaac looked at his father again he had a frozen expression on his face and his knife raised towards the face of the youngest and looking better Isaac saw a red spot forming on his father's chest. Only a few seconds later Isaac's father collapsed to the ground, dead. The sheriff detached Isaac.
"Are you all right? Did he hurt you?" he worried.
"No." Isaac simply replied, not realizing what had just happened.
"He was going to kill you. That's why I shot him." explained the Sheriff.
Isaac nodded. The sheriff led him outside. As soon as he stepped outside, Melissa ran over him and hugged him with all her strength. He also nested in her shoulder and thought that he really considered her as his own mother, but his father had really put a doubt on her feelings for him. Melissa moved off and took Isaac's head in her hands to look him in the eye:
"Don't ever do that again! You have no idea how scared you made me," she exclaimed.
"Sorry, I just didn't want him to hurt you." he admitted.
Melissa sighed and hugged him until a few minutes later when Scott arrived. The young mother moved and smiled at them before going to talk to the sheriff.
"You're crazy, man, I'm telling you right now, don't ever do anything like that to me again!" Scott said.
"I couldn't stand the fact that he might hurt you, so I thought if I stayed he'd let you go." admitted the boy.
Scott smiled at him. A few hours later everything was back in order, Isaac had stayed away all night, thinking about what his father had told him about the fact that he would never really be family for Scott and Melissa. He finally decided to go inside the house, he entered the living room and he saw them on the couch they were just sitting in silence, Melissa gently passed her fingers through her son's hair, seeing that he realized that they were representing a mother and son and that he was just a stranger here. That's when Scott looked up at him.
"Are you all right? Where were you?" he asked.
"Just outside," Isaac replied.
"As you can see, we're in a little family moment here..." Scott began.
Isaac felt his heart tighten, suspecting the end of this sentence, Scott was going to ask him to leave them alone, it was obvious.
"So, are you coming?" says Scott.
To say that Isaac was surprised was a euphemism, he didn't move for a few seconds.
"Really?" he asked.
"Of course, you're part of the family, and nothing in the world will change that." Melissa replied
"Now you can make a real new start." Scott said.
Isaac went to sit at Melissa's right and at that moment he knew everything would be fine, finally.
