Perdix's Selfishness
At school, Perdix was an ordinary college student. He's got friends, works at a coffee shop, where his boss is his own father, and he always went to the Karate Club. He's a very cool person, loved by many in his college. And he lived life as a normal teen, with a will to study and strength to become a person who would help others. Hence, why he became the Class' Auditor.
Of course, being Auditor was not easy, after all. Besides, it's a heavy responsibility. He had teammates that he had to adjust to. A bit of shaky tension with some of them, and sometimes he hides what he truly feels. And besides, he would always have someone bullying him, but he would let them. There was always these group of bullies who bullied students. He was weak at that time when he could not stop them. He didn't cry. He lost his mother when he was 11, so all his tears poured on her grave until he lost the ability to cry.
One day, he would be staying after class with his boyfriend, setting up the whole inside court for an event about communication. He was having fun with him, a lot. He would look up at the sky, daydreaming and saying to himself that this was going to be a happy day.
"Hey, Perdix? Where should we make the judges watch?" Kanshi asked.
"Oh, maybe we should make them watch on the side. Also, we'd just moved the chairs over thereand then we'll go. You free today?" Perdix asked, hoping that Kanshi was.
"Sorry, babe. Not free today. Grand-mama sick. Gotta take care of her." Kanshi said, looking a bit sad.
Perdix would kiss Kanshi and look at him. "Hey. Want me to walk you home? I mean, if you want."
Kanshi would shake his head no. "Nah. Thanks, though. Look, I'll see you at school tomorrow. Love you."
As Kanshi walked away, Perdix smiled and waved. "Love you too!"
Perdix started to go home. When he came back home, he hugged his supportive father, and he started to go up to his room to freshen up and rest. Phone at hand, he scrolled through social media until he fell asleep.
He'd then wake up in the night, and he'd study first, fully immersed in his books until Kanshi texted.
[K: Sup?]
[P: Not much, you?]
[K: Ah, still sleepy, heh. Ready for tomorrow?]
[P: Yeah, you know I am.]
[K: Hey, I know how overwhelming things can be. But my advice is that you'd always talk to me about these things, alright? Promise?]
[P: Yeah, hehe. We'll be together, right?]
[K: Of course. For all eternity... ngl that was cringe]
[P: I love the way you promise me things]
[K: I love... you. Anyway, I'm headin' to the store. Gotta go. See ya tomorrow, babe.]
[P: Love you. Bye :P]
As he had his phone on his hand, he felt drowsy, his tired eyes almost closing until they closed shut and he slept.
Police passed by his house, as well as an ambulance, but they went the other way as Perdix fell asleep, wondering why there was Police and Ambulance at this moment.
The next morning, he'd go to school. He went to his favorite bench to wait for Kanshi. He kept waiting. He always did. Until... someone approached him at his side. It was his friend, Saiko.
"Huh? Saiko, what're you doing here? Thought it was your first period." Perdix asked.
"Perdix... who are you waiting for here?" Saiko asked sadly, almost as if she were going to burst.
"Saiko? I'm waiting for Kanshi. Why? Has he called sick today? Also, why have you asked?" Perdix asked, looking a bit worried.
Saiko started to tear up as she sat down beside Perdix. "Perdix..."
"What?" Perdix looked worried. Saiko showed the news report of a 19 year old last night who was assaulted by a group. At the crime, while the victim was fighting in self defense, he ripped out a crest out of one of the group member's shirt, before being stabbed seven times by two males, leading to his death as they ran. The victim was walking back to where he came from, but he never made it and he fell to the ground. He was Dead On Arrival.
"Yeah. So? Kanshi said he was going to the store. The store's the other street. That could not have been possibly Kanshi." Perdix said in concern.
When the victim arrived at the hospital, the police identified him as Kanshi Miyazaki. Seven stab wounds, and a large hit on the head with a blunt object. The suspects were suspected to be students of Golden Integration College, where Perdix and Kanshi attended.
Saiko looked at Perdix in fear that Perdix might not handle this information well. But Perdix started to shake. His hands were shaking, his head started to ache. His heart breaking as he felt a sharp pain in his chest. As if he wanted to cry. His tears were forming, as he started to hold his head with his shaking hands. He started to laugh.
"Really?! That's not Kanshi! Kanshi promised that he'd stay with me for all eternity! Nice joke, Saiko, but not funny!" Perdix said as he laughed hysterically.
Saiko could only look down in pain as she'd wished she never showed him, or even better, just lied to him.
"Saiko, please! Please! Kanshi is not dead! Please, please, please! I can't lose him! Kanshi is alive, right?! He'll stay with me for all eternity!" Perdix burst into tears as he stood up. His legs were shaking until he fell to his knees, his eyes filled with tears. His tearstained face was filled with sadness and anger and confusion. He was filled with much despair and confusion that it caught the attention of many students. Many loved Perdix and when they heard the news they comforted him. Until the group of bullies arrived.
The two males, Jared and Vice pushed Perdix and he fell on the floor. The girls, Hannah, Darcy, and Remily were looking down at Perdix.
"Aww, is the poor teachers' pet sad? Cry about it, Perdix!" Hannah said, kicking him. Someone tried stopping her, but Vice backed the person back.
"Is your boyfriend dead? Good for him! Gay couples like you deserve to rot in hell!" Remily said.
"You're lucky Kanshi is dead, or you would have joined him as well!" Darcy threw her schoolbag at the crying Perdix. "He never loved you! He always wanted me! You're lucky I'm willing to even let you live! And what are you going to do? I'm the daughter of the mayor of this town. You got no power, Perdix!"
Perdix started to become numb. Saiko had to push people away as she slid beside Perdix, who had dead eyes and a sad expression. She saw the blackness in his eyes, the bottom of his eyes started to grow dark, and his breathing slowing down.
Hannah reached for Saiko and grabbed her hair, but Perdix threw Darcy's schoolbag at Hannah's face, knocking her back. In fear, Darcy and the others stood back.
Saiko looked at Perdix. He looked like a man would kill with no remose. A man who could cut up someone and smile. Once he was the most loved being of all. But people pushed him too far, and it was his turn to take. He started to scream so loud that everyone had to cover their ears.
Perdix aimed for Vice, where he went for a very fast and precise punch. And another. And another, until Vice was so overwhelmed that Perdix started punching Vice from left to right with only the will to kill Vice.
"You killed Kanshi. You killed him. You killed him. I won't forgive you. I'll make sure that you suffer the same pain tenfold!" Perdix kept punching and punching, left hook, straight right punch, right hook, over and over until Perdix went straight for the face, knocking Vice unconscious.
Jared charged at Perdix. "He deserved it! You deserve all the sadness in this world!" As Jared launched a kick using his right leg, Perdix grabbed that leg and broke it instantly as he dropped his elbow on Jared's knee, cracking the joint. Jared could only scream but he stopled as Pkept punching Jared on the face over and over until his nose was unrecognizable to be a nose.
Darcy brought a gun, but Perdix grabbed her arm and grabbed the barrel of the gun, using his skill to flip the gun and take it by force. He shot Darcy two times in the leg, the pain she felt was overwhelming, as Perdix was tossing the gun away on the floor. He then grabbed Jared's unconscious body and lifted it up, before smashing it onto Darcy, which she could only do was scream in pain.
The two girls, Hannah and Remily, started running. But he chased them down, and smashed their faces on the concrete of the floor. He breathed on their ears, making sure that they stood down.
Saiko looked at Perdix in fear. Perdix looked at Saiko and he started walking at her, with the intention to kill. The audience was running in panic when the gun was seen. Police sirens were blaring outside the school as they've evacuated the students.
Saiko would only freeze in place, as she felt fear from head to toe. Perdix approached Saiko and as he was preparing to attack her, he froze as well. He was in tears, as his face and clothes had blood and sweat.
"Saiko. I'm sorry... I could have not stopped them before. And now, Kanshi is dead, because of me failing my responsibility-"
"Shut up! Perdix, please! Wake up! It's not your fault! Stop! Stop making things worse for yourself! Look at you, all b-bloody and whatnot! What would your father say about all of this?! Did you consider what he felt?! Or what about Kanshi's Grand-Mama?! What about me?! Did you think about what I felt when we lost Kanshi?! When I lost you to this horror of yours! Did you think I did not cry for you and for Kanshi?! You-" Saiko could never find mkre words to describe and argue with Perdix.
"Kanshi is dead! Nothing matters if he's dead. What's he gonna do, tell me to stop?! Remember, he's gone! So I'm sorry for being selfish, but I did this for all of you! For him!" Perdix was in tears again.
"Did this for us?! Is this what we have wanted? Huh? ANSWER ME, PERDIX!" Saiko screamed at Perdix, punching his shoulder. Perdix could never react. His heart felt so conflicted.
"It's so unfair... its so unfair! Why am I the bad guy here when I-" Perdix was slapped on the face by Saiko, as she ran to grab the gun on the floor. She raised the gun and she went near Perdix.
"You're selfish if you thought you did this for us. You've invalidated what we've felt! You've invalidated the fact that you're the one who's deciding what our feelings would be, selfish prick!" Saiko screamed again at Perdix. Perdix could only cry and fall on his knees again.
"But what about what I feel?! I just wanted a happy life for me and Kanshi! What's so selfish about that!" Perdix said, his words being choked up by tears. He then realized that he was the one being selfish all along, and that it lead to him being selfish by taking the lives of others.
Saiko could not speak. She sighed, and she put the gun down. She hugged Perdix in between tears, punching his shoulder at times.
Saiko sat down at Perdix's side. "I know how it feels, Perdix. Trust me, I know."
"I miss him. I wish he were here." Perdix would say, as he wiped his tears.
"I know. It wasn't your fault, Perdix. I know. I know, Perdix. It hurts as well. But the things you did, aren't going to bring him back. I'm sorry..." Saiko put the gun on the floor as she hugged Perdix. Perdix poured his tears on Saiko's shoulder, his vision getting blurry as his head felt lightheaded.
Perdix would only wake up at a hospital bed, as he looked around, a sleeping Saiko on his left. He smiles, as he finally thought that it was over. The doctors visited him and while hours passed by, they stiched him up and made sure to give him the best treatment.
As Perdix was lying down on the hospital, he watched the news. His college had put up a memorandum of Kanshi in honor of his memory. And in the news, the 5 bullies are now going to be in trial, especially the mayor. They will be in a trial for charges of murder, assault and battery, bullying, and emotional damages.
Perdix smiled again. He saw a butterfly appear at the open window. He offered a finger for the butterfly to hop on.
"Hey, little butterfly. Could you send my love a message? Tell him that I'm fine here, and that I'm going to keep on remembering him. That I'll always love him." The butterfly flew away gracefully.
"Even when you're not with me, I'll always love you. I'm going to be honest, I'll miss you so much. But I know we'll meet again, my love. We'll reunite in the stars..."
