Chapter 1

As I delve into Michelle Obama’s book, “Becoming,” I see parallels in our experiences. She, too, faced criticisms and doubts along her path, from comments about her appearance to questions about her abilities. Yet, she learned to respond with resilience and grace, often choosing to deflect negativity with humor.

As I read Michelle’s story, I’m reminded that imposter syndrome is a universal experience. We all grapple with doubts about our abilities and wrestle with questions about our power. Her journey serves as a testament to the shared human experience of overcoming self-doubt and rising above criticism.

In my own career, I’ve encountered moments where others doubted my capabilities, much like the college counselor who questioned Michelle’s suitability for Princeton. But just as Michelle didn’t need to prove herself to that counselor, I’ve come to understand that my worth is not defined by others’ perceptions. Instead, it’s about staying true to oneself, believing in one’s potential, and continuously evolving.

As the author of “Leap of Faith” and currently serving as a Director of Product Management, my journey has been a dynamic one. It began in the tech world, where I honed my skills as a software engineer, delving deep into coding and complex problem-solving. However, my path took an intriguing turn as I ventured into the realm of healthcare, assuming the role of a brand manager. This transition demanded an entirely new skill set, encompassing marketing strategies and a profound understanding of the healthcare landscape.

These diverse roles have been my classroom, teaching me the vital lesson of adaptability in one’s career. In my book, “Leap of Faith,” I share my personal story of these transitions and how they shaped my professional identity. Moreover, I’ve made it a mission to mentor others, guiding them through their own career journeys. I firmly believe that in the ever-evolving landscape of one’s career, the path resembles more of a jungle gym than a conventional ladder.

Michelle’s journey, as beautifully depicted in “Becoming,” inspires me to lean into my aspirations and break through any glass ceilings that may limit my ambitions. Her story encourages us all to own our narratives and embrace the ever-evolving paths we traverse. In the end, the question is not where we come from but where we’re headed and who we’re becoming.
