Chapter 1

Amara

I was born into the Crescent Valley Pack as Amara, an Omega, the lowest rank in our pack hierarchy. My mother had sought refuge here, fleeing from a past that she rarely spoke of. We lived in the shadow of the Blood Moon Pack, a constant reminder of the fearsome Alpha Stone, whose reputation loomed large over our territory.

The stories of Stone's ruthless nature were whispered among our pack members, tales of how he had committed the unthinkable, murdering his own father in cold blood to seize control of the Blood Moon Pack. Such an act was unheard of in our world, where family bonds were sacred. The power he wielded and the dark legend that surrounded him were enough to send chills down the spines of all werewolves in the region.

I had grown up hearing these stories, tales of the Alpha who was both feared and respected, his name spoken in hushed tones. As an Omega, I had little status or influence within our pack, but I couldn't help but be intrigued by the enigmatic figure that was Alpha Stone.

One fateful evening, as the moon hung low and full in the sky, a message arrived from the Blood Moon Pack. Stone was on his way to visit our pack, seeking mates for his werewolves. It was an unprecedented move, and anxiety rippled through our community.

The night he arrived, the air crackled with tension. Stone was an imposing figure, his jet-black hair and piercing eyes radiating authority. As I stood among my pack-mates, my heart raced when our eyes met. His gaze was intense, unwavering, and it made my skin prickle with awareness.

Having turned 19 three months ago, I found myself standing in line, surrounded by other young women, waiting for Stone's wolves to come around and assess us as potential mates. Dread gripped my heart, and I couldn't help but send a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess, hoping against hope that my mate wouldn't be from the Blood Moon Pack.

Leaving my mother, my only blood relative and the anchor of my life, was a prospect I couldn't bear to think about. I usually kept to myself, and my duties, friendships were a hard things for me, as many saw me as an outsider, deep down I was far more dominant then they liked. They wanted a girl who was demure and quiet, and I was advised by Alpha Geoff to keep to myself.

My mother had sought refuge in the Crescent Valley Pack to protect me, and the thought of being torn away from her was a painful one. As I stood in that line, my destiny hung in the balance, and I could only hope that the Moon Goddess would show me mercy and spare me from a fate that would wrench me away from the only family I had ever known.

Alpha Stone, with his imposing presence and icy gaze, stood at the front, his eyes scanning the line of young women. It was an unusual gathering, as females within our werewolf community rarely remained single for long once they reached maturity. The natural scent that accompanied their maturation inevitably attracted their destined mates.

As the soldiers under his command began to step towards the line of girls aged 19 to 21, the tension in the air was palpable. Each step they took brought them closer to the potential mates, and the gravity of the moment hung heavy over all of us. It was an unconventional and nerve-wracking way to find a mate, one that went against the natural order of things, and I couldn't help but wonder if the Moon Goddess would intervene in this unusual selection process.

Beta Greyson, second in command of the Blood Moon Pack, approached the line of young women, his status as an already spoken-for mate adding a layer of complexity to the selection process. As he walked down the line, assessing each girl, my heart raced, and all eyes were fixed on us. Tradition dictated that I should lower my eyes in submission, but I couldn't bring myself to do so. The only ones I would willingly bow my head to were Alpha Geoff and his wife Luna Sofie.

"Amara," I heard Alpha Geoff's warning in my mind through our pack link, but it fell on deaf ears. My gaze remained locked with Beta Greyson's deep brown eyes, a defiance that I couldn't explain burning within me.

"Interesting," Greyson finally spoke, his hand reaching out to grasp my wrist. He pulled it towards him and lowered his nose to my wrist, sniffing carefully. Tension coiled in his shoulders, and I could feel the weight of his gaze on me. He continued to hold my eyes, but they seemed to glass over slightly, a sure sign that he was communicating with his Alpha through their link. Panic surged through me as I watched him, not knowing what this meant for my future. Eventually, he gently released my wrist, and it fell to my side, leaving me trembling with uncertainty.

As Beta Greyson turned away from the line-up, my eyes remained fixated on his retreating back. I couldn't help but sense the weight of the heated gazes coming from the front, where the two pack Alphas, Geoff and Stone, stood. The tension in the air was palpable, and I could feel the unspoken expectations hanging over me.

My heart pounded in my chest as I waited for some indication of what this encounter meant for my future. The choices of the Beta, and the approval of the Alphas, would undoubtedly shape the course of my life in ways I couldn't yet comprehend.

As the selection process came to an end and none of the girls from our pack were chosen by the Blood Moon Pack, a collective wave of relief washed over the girls and their families. The tension that had hung in the air dissipated, and there was a sense of gratitude that we could return to our normal lives.

My mother, sensing my emotions, walked up to me and enveloped me in a hug, her relief palpable. However, our moment of respite was short-lived as Alpha Geoff's voice echoed through the pack's mind link.

"Bring refreshments to the pack hall, and behave yourself," Alpha Geoff warned, his message causing my body to freeze with apprehension.

I relayed the message to my mother, trying to keep the worry out of my voice. Her gaze met mine, and I could see the concern mirrored in her eyes as we both contemplated what this summons might entail. The uncertainty hung heavy in the air as we prepared to face whatever awaited us in the pack hall.

"I'll be right back, Mom," I assured my mother before making my way to the kitchen to fetch the drinks. Each step I took towards the pack hall felt like a slow march towards an uncertain fate. Despite the mounting tension, I refused to let any sign of weakness show as I entered the hall.

Alpha Stone's head slowly turned in my direction, his intense gaze tracking my every movement. I opted to walk further from him, strategically placing drinks in front of Alpha Geoff, Beta Brenden, and eventually moving to Beta Greyson. But as I stepped next to Alpha Stone, a strange sensation washed over me, as if my body was charged with an electric current.

Suddenly, Alpha Stone's hand shot out, snatching my wrist much like Beta Greyson had done earlier. This time, though, it was as if a fire had been ignited inside me. His touch, surprisingly warm despite his cold exterior, sent shivers down my spine. I felt as if I had lost control of my own body.

He lifted my wrist to his nose, inhaling deeply, his eyes never leaving mine. Then, something unexpected happened. His icy blue eyes transformed into a mesmerizing shade of violet, and my heart seemed to stop in response.

"No!" I found my voice, speaking loudly and firmly, despite the shock and uncertainty that gripped me.

"You dare deny me?" Alpha Stone's voice was as commanding as his presence, and he rose to his full height, towering over me. My head barely reached his shoulder, but I refused to lower my eyes, maintaining a defiant gaze locked with his.

"Amara!" Alpha Geoff hissed my name in warning, but Alpha Stone seemed unfazed, a smirk playing on his lips as he continued to hold my gaze, his violet eyes holding me captive. The tension in the room was palpable, and I realized that I had just challenged the most feared Alpha in the region.

I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat, as Alpha Stone’s eyes returned to his icy blue. This can’t be happening, how was it possible that a low ranking wolf was the fated mate of the strongest Alpha we have ever had in history.

The pull towards Stone was undeniable, and his touch had sent a surge of electricity through me that left me breathless. His soft voice speaking my name stirred something wild within my heart. But despite the inexplicable connection, I couldn't yield to this fate so easily.

"No," I said again, my voice firmer this time as I pulled my hand away from his, challenging the Alpha in a way that seemed to amuse him.

Alpha Geoff's stern voice cut through the tension, snapping my attention to him. The weight of my fate finally sank in, but I couldn't accept it without a fight. "Behave yourself!" he warned once more.

"No, you can't make me do this!" I hissed defiantly, my eyes locked onto his in a way I had never dared before. The room seemed to hold its breath as the standoff between an Omega and her Alpha unfolded, and I couldn't help but wonder what this act of rebellion would mean for my future.

Alpha Geoff's words cut through the tension like a blade, and the weight of his decision bore down on me like a heavy burden. "Amara, I will not risk a war with Alpha Stone," he said gravely, his warning knotting the pit in my stomach even tighter. The prospect of being outcasted from the pack was a terrifying one, especially for my mother. This pack had been our salvation, and to lose it now would be devastating.

My gaze returned to Alpha Stone, and I couldn't help but narrow my eyes at the curiosity and amusement that seemed to dance in his eyes as he observed the unfolding situation.

Desperation welled up inside me, and I squared my shoulders, refusing to allow sadness to show. "Please, my mother is all I have left," I implored, my voice unwavering. "Please find someone else!"

Alpha Geoff's response was gruff, and he reiterated, "You know that's not how this works." The realization that my fate was sealed settled heavily upon me, and I could do nothing but meet Alpha Stone's gaze with a mixture of defiance and resignation.

The weight of the finality of being mated to an Alpha settled upon me, and the shiver that ran down my spine was a stark reminder of the submission that awaited me. An Alpha's strength grew once he mated with his Luna, and I knew I would have to allow him to claim my body.

Desperation clawed at me, and I made one final plea, "Let my mother come with us!"

Alpha Geoff's response was clear, "No, she stays here." I knew that he was making this decision based on the safety of his pack. He understood that I would comply with whatever Alpha Stone demanded, as long as it ensured my mother's safety.

Anger and frustration welled up inside me as I stood in that room filled with powerful werewolves. Alpha Stone's dismissal felt like a cruel reminder of my helplessness.

"Go say goodbye to your mother," Alpha Stone commanded, his tone carrying the authority of an Alpha who was used to being obeyed.

I didn't want to waste any more time arguing with them. I stormed out of the hall and ran towards my mother's modest home. It was a small but comforting place, just big enough for the two of us. As I burst through the door, the grave expression on her face mirrored my own turmoil.

"Oh, honey," she said, pulling me into her warm embrace. Her comforting arms wrapped around me as tears welled up in my eyes.

"Mom," I sobbed, clinging to her for dear life.

"Baby, everything will be okay," she reassured me, smoothing my hair with her hand. My mother was my rock, my source of comfort, and the thought of facing Alpha Stone without her by my side was a terrifying prospect that I couldn't bear to contemplate.

"How will it be okay?" I mumbled into my mother's shoulder, my doubts and fears consuming me.

"It's okay, mates have to take care of each other," she tried to soothe me. "And Alpha Stone, while we only hear horrible stories of him, I know you will be well protected in his pack."

Her words carried a reassuring tone, but there was something she didn't realize. She believed I was destined to be the mate of one of Alpha Stone's soldiers, not Alpha Stone himself. For a moment, I contemplated not telling her the truth, but I knew that she would find out eventually.

"Mom," I pulled away from her, my voice trembling with the confession. "It's him, it's Alpha Stone who is my mate."

My mother's face remained unreadable for a moment, and then she slowly smiled. "Of course, you would be destined to be a Luna," she said, taking my face between her hands and kissing my forehead. "All the trouble you cause with your stubbornness, all the warnings from Alpha Geoff, it all makes perfect sense, my baby."

Puzzled by her words, I pulled away from her. "But I tried, I tried to not cause trouble, I just never fit in well with the rest of the pack."

She smiled softly and patted my shoulder. "Of course you didn't, because you were never meant to blend in; you were meant to lead. You, my dear child, will always be fine because you are a fighter."

Her words filled me with a newfound sense of determination, and as I prepared to face my uncertain future as Alpha Stone's mate, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope and strength.
