Chapter 1
Seabreeze tickled Minekos cat-like ears while she layed in her hamick inside her hut on stilts, which stood above the water past the shoreline. The water was nice and calm, not a rain cloud in sight. She wondered when he brothers were goint to come back with their morning catch. The sun was already high above the water by now. As she sat up to stretch her arms above her head her tail twitched side to side. Finally, she had mustard up some energy to get the fire going to prepare for the meal. After she had put some wood on the firepit and stoking the fire, she walked to the edge of the platform and sat down with her feet in the crystal blue water. Small fish swarm past her gently by, and her tan skin the color of the earth sparkled in the hot afternoon sun.
Finally her brothers arrived back from sea on their boat. Both had the same chestnut brown hair as her, but they were alot taller and stronger. They were grinning ear to ear as they brought in their catch. “This has got to be the biggest fish I have ever caught!”, her younger brother Roe reeled. “I dont know how your going to cook this monster, but I’m starving!”, demanded her older brother Tide. “Thats a moon fish! It’s as big as you Roe!” Mineko exclaimed. “They live in the deeper waters, mother said father caught one before. She smiled at them and remembered the past memories when she went spear fishing with her father. He could hold his breath the longest out of everyone in the village.
Mineko went to work filleting the fish with a sharp knife when her mother and little sister walked inside. “Minnow! Look what I made!” Shouted Kiki wearing a new dress made of banana leaves woven together.” She handed a seashell baclet to Mineko. “Very pretty Keeks!” Mineko replied back. “I love how beautiful the shells are.” Kiki was the youngest of the four of them and Mineko looked forward each day for her new present from her little sister. “I found lots of coconuts we made coconut milk and traded the rest for some hot spices and rice.”, her mother said. “We are going to eat good today. Look what Roe and Tide caught.” Said Mineko. “Whoa! Thats a moon fish. I remember when your dad caught one of those. He held his breath for so long I thought he drowned!” said her mother. She turned and gave Roe and Tide a smile and said to them, “What a great catch! I’m proud of you both.” Mineko finished her curried fish and rice dish and ate with her family.
The next morning there was a loud explosion. The house shook and soon there was shouting. This was not the first time the earth had shook, but this time it was more violent than the last. Mineko and her family hurried outside.
