Chapter 1

Derek

As I get myself dressed, I look down at the rather gorgeous woman lying in the hotel bed. She most likely fell asleep thinking that I would be here when she wakes from her sex coma and that she would be the one who could change my selfish ways. She isn't and I won't be. I never am there when they wake. Hell, I don't even remember her name or what her name even started with. They all always remember my name though. They should. I am the most powerful person in Port Woodland. This city bows at my feet, and I allow it to. Women, like this one, would give anything for the chance to spend time with me like she has...and a lot of women have gotten that chance. I love women. There have been a few times that I have told a man "Hey, I'm about to go fuck the brains out of your woman. She will call you when we are done." and they don't do a damn thing to stop me. I love this power that I have, mainly because I fucking earned it and I deserve it.

I grew up poor. Both of my parents worked their fingers to the bones to take care of me and my 4 brothers. We didn't have what we wanted, but they always made sure we had what we needed. Growing up that way taught me a lot, and made me the money-focused man that I am today. The day that I made my first $100,000 I paid off all of my parents' mortgage and put money in a trust account for them. They wept when I showed up at their house that day with the "Paid in Full" paper from the bank and told them what I did. At that point, I was still living in a tiny efficiency apartment in a shitty part of the city but I didn't care. Those two sacrificed everything to make sure I was taken care of and I knew it was only right to do the same for them. I worked hard and long hours to save and build my investment business while taking night classes at a community college. The day finally came when I made my first $1 million in one day. I put that money down on my sprawling mansion and asked my parents to move in with me...and it only took me two years to pay it off completely.

As the years passed, I made more money than I knew what to do with so I helped with putting my brothers through college in exchange for them working for me while they did so. I turned a small, one-room investment company into a multi-billion-dollar corporation. We handle everything that has to do with making money here. I bought the high-rise building that my office is nestled in, and lease space to other powerful businesses which in turn makes me more money. There are temporary employment agencies, law firms, small accounting firms, modeling agencies, a couple of dermatology clinics. Tomorrow afternoon will be the ribbon cutting for the remodel that was done on the main floor and lobby area. I worked with some small restaurants to have them add a pop-up type location within the building so it would be convenient to get food while working. I hate waiting an hour or more for food deliveries and if I am in the middle of an important project I don't want to stop to go out and look for something to eat...so it made sense for me to make it easier for me to open up the main lobby to eateries.

I finish getting dressed, take one last look in the mirror, and leave the hotel room before 'whatever her name is' wakes. I get outside and my driver, Greg, is waiting for me. "Good evening, sir. How was your adventure?" he asks with a cheeky grin. This man knows me better than probably I know myself. He is older, wise, and of all people in this world, he is the one person that I would trust with my life.

"No adventure, Greg, just a little play," I say back with an equally cheeky grin. I get into the car and direct him to take me home. I'm sure my mother has cooked dinner by now and is most likely pacing the foyer for me to get home. It is almost 6pm, but when I walk through that door she will act as though it is 2am.

I walk into my house and, as predicted, there is my mother pacing the foyer. "It is after 6. Dinner is getting cold." she scolds and marches off towards the dining room. I walk in and see my brothers and my dad sitting at the table already. This is a nightly thing. We all eat dinner together, every single night unless we have a damn good excuse for missing and we have to tell my mother ahead of time that we will not be there for dinner or she will tan our grown asses. "Sit." she points at my designated seat, which is not at the head of the table...that is where my dad sits.

We finished with dinner, and my mom decided that since I was the last one at the table I get to help with cleaning up. We get the kitchen cleaned and dishes loaded into the dishwasher. "How was your day, mom?" I ask her to break the silence.

"It was good. Your dad and I went for our walk. He had his yearly physical today. They are recommending the double knee replacement, but he is protesting it so maybe you can talk to him about it. He needs it. I had book club this afternoon, and we are about to start a new book...a romance novel this time." she says, making her voice go a little husky as she says the last part, which makes me laugh a little.

"Sounds interesting. I will talk to Dad. How are the others? Anything I should know about?"

"Well, Marcus has a new girlfriend...or at least he thinks she may be his girlfriend. Andrew and that last thing he was fooling around with finally called it quits. Anthony and Chrissy have come to terms that they aren't going to be able to reconcile the marriage, so they are meeting with an attorney tomorrow to get things going on a divorce. And Canon mentioned that he may be bringing a date to dinner tomorrow. Canon also said that he was going to talk to you about letting him enroll for his Master's degree so he may need a moment alone with you on that. I think that is about all for today. How was your day, my sweet boy?" my mom signs out as she dries her hands.

"It was okay. Made some money, goofed out for a little while today which was nice, and then came home to the only woman that I will ever love." I tell her as I kiss her forehead.

My mom goes to her reading room, I'm sure to start on whatever the Book of the Month is. I head towards the study because I know that is where the rest of the family will be. I walk in and see my dad sitting in his recliner watching something on PBS. "Dad. Mom said the doctor wants you to have the knee surgery. Why don't you want to do it?"

"Because those assholes want to make me useless for god knows however long. I need my legs." he says, never taking his eyes away from the nature show that I can now see he is fixated on.

"Well, call them tomorrow and set it up. You won't be down long, and you'll be better off once it is done. Mom wants to take dance lessons, and a new set of knees will make that happen for her. You want mom to be happy, right?" I ask.

Yeah, that gets his attention. Anything that involves making my mom happy is immediately always going to be my dad's mission in life. "Hell yes, your mother is my entire universe. Her happiness is my reason for living. I'll call in the morning first thing. I know I'm being stubborn, but I'm just scared that I'll never be the man she needs if I get cut open like that." he says, and I can see a touch of true worry in his eyes.

"It will be fine, Dad. You'll have nurses and physical therapy people come in and stay here to take care of you and that will help with keeping mom from going out of her mind trying to take it all on herself." I tell him, extending my hand out. He shakes my hand and gives me a mildly defeated eye roll. I turn to my brother Anthony. "Tony, I'm sorry to hear about you and Chrissy. I was hopeful things would work out. If you need anything, let me know. I will help if I can." I tell him, extending the same hand to him. He gives me a nod and turns his attention to the tv. It is his undoing. He cheated, got his mistress pregnant, and had to tell Chrissy. Chrissy is sterile from having had cancer as a child and the treatments she underwent left her unable to ever have children, so she was heartbroken that he knocked up "that little slut" as my mom calls the other woman. I turn to Marcus now. "Marc...I hear you may have a love interest."

"I swear, Mom cannot keep her mouth shut for anything." he says with a laugh, which causes us all to laugh and nod. "She is a nice girl. Works in the building at one of the modeling agencies. I invited her to dinner tomorrow night."

The hotel woman that I just left works at one of the modeling agencies. Hopefully, it isn't the same person Marcus is referring to. That would be awkward. I ask "Do you have a pic of this girl?"

Marcus gives me a heated stare, mostly because he knows that I am probably about to drop some bad news about his potential lover. He pulls up a photo on his phone and flashes it to me. Yep, that is the same girl as earlier. "Sorry, Marc." is all I can say with a shrug and a grin.

"Damn, dude. I was hoping she would be something worth dating. Can't you keep your dick in your pants? Save some pussy for the rest of us?" he blurts out in aggravation.

"Hey, language. There is a lady in this house, and we don't talk like in front of ladies." my dad says, crooking his head around to us. This makes us all laugh because we happen to know for a fact that ladies love hearing dirty words.

"Sorry. She came onto me in the elevator." I say with a shrug. Moving on, I look to Andrew. "Andy. Hear that you finally dropped that last thing you were fooling around with. Mom's words, not mine."

"Yeah, shit got boring with her. I'm already on to the next conquest. I give this one 2 months, tops." he says with a cocky smile. Of all of my brothers, Andrew is the one who looks the most like me.

"Canon. Last but not least. Mom said that you are bringing a date to dinner tomorrow night. What is she like?" I ask, but only get a weird look in return from my baby brother. Canon has always been different from the rest of us, and I have had my suspicions that he may be gay but have never asked him because I feel that is his business, and when he wants us to know something he will tell us.

"My date's name is Kelly, has a private security firm and is quite simply the most interesting person that I have ever met." he tells me with a sincere smile. He is deliberately not saying 'she' or 'her' so I think Kelly may not be of the female persuasion.

"Well, great. I'm excited to meet Kelly." I return, giving him a smile and wink. "I've got some work to do, so I'm headed to my office. Canon, come see me in a little while so we can talk about your Master's degree enrollment." I say as I walk out of the room.
