Brother
For the briefest period all I ever wanted was to be your best friend
Your enemy, your equal
I wanted to run the flower shop while you ran from the police, petals in your hair
My small view of the world, almost as small as me
No matter what, I’d ride my bike right behind you, wherever you went
I’d watch you play Minecraft, building worlds I would dream in
Playing any game myself stung of unbearable, inexplicable loneliness
Too content watching you, how could I ever want anything more
So content being your inferior for so long
How long I’ve grown now, to turn my nose up and look down on you
Ignited with instant fury at the slightest misstep, I scold myself directly after scolding you
The house shakes when my anger erupts
And clouds of smoke too thick to breathe in fill in the rooms
Papa always takes your side and the lava spills over
The heat is too much to bear so I avoid any triggers
Namely your presence
It isn’t guiltless though,
Worse than an enemy is a stranger.
