Chapter 1

“Because she’s lonely and she needs a tank companion”.

The man sighed and leaned back into his black comfy office chair.

“I’m sorry Evan, but we don’t have enough money to another whale. Lucy will have to wait”.

“What about assigning a trainer to her, that’ll bring up her spirts and benefit the parks income”.

“That won’t work, my boy; All of the other whale trainers have tried, but Lucy doesn’t want to cooperate”.

Evan stood in front of his boss’s desk, thinking about what to say next. In the past few weeks since he was hired as a dolphin trainer, Evan has often spotted the killer whale (Lucy) drifting around her tank in complete silence.

Whenever he brings up the whale in conservation with another trainer, they just shrug and say it’s because of the death of the other whale that shared the pool with Lucy.

But she would have moved on already if it was the case.

“What if I trained her?“.

Evan’s boss raised an eyebrow at him.

"You want to train Lucy?"

He nodded his head.

“Yeah, why not?“.

His boss sighed heavily as he pulled out the whale’s file from inside his desk and handed it to the young trainer.

“Alright, I let you; I hope you know what you’re doing”.

With a smile on his face, Evan left his boss’s office with a bounce in his step, now knowing that he’ll be finally able to help that poor orca.

The next day, Evan got up and went to work early, so he could start training the killer whale the easy tricks and signals. After getting into his wetsuit, he stopped by the kitchen to pick up a pail of freshly caught fish to reward Lucy with if she did what he ordered her to.

“Someone’s in an extra good mood today” remarked Christine, one of Evan’s colleagues who sorts out the fresh fish that arrives early every day, to feed the marine animals they house.

“Did our boss give you a pay raise? Or did you finally get a girlfriend?” asked Christine, as she stood in front of the kitchen sink sorting a large bucket of fish.

“Oh, no. It’s much better than that” softly chucked Evan, as he leaned on the counter next to his colleague.

“I’m going to train Lucy”.

Christine nearly dropped a slick, wet fat salmon on the tile floor.

“You’re going to train Lucy?!“.

Evan nodded his head confidently.

“Yeah. Is there a problem with that?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Christine turned her head to her right to look at him.

“Evan, that whale doesn’t listen to any of the trainers; She could kill you if you get into the water with her”.

“Relax, Christine. I wasn’t planning on swimming with her today., I was going to teach her the basics. Once she and I build a strong bond, then I’ll slowly introduce her to doing tricks with me in the water”.

Christine shifted her gaze back down into the sink and let out a sigh he didn’t realize she was holding.

“Do you really think you can train Lucy?“.

Evan smiled warmly at her.

“Yes, I do. That poor whale drifts slowly around her tank every day, miserably. Someone has to do something about it”.

Christine let a smile spread across her face as she turned to look at Evan again, with a full fish pail for him.

“Alright, Evan. Here’s your pail” she said as she handed him the metal bucket.

Evan took the pail from her hands before she said goodbye to her.

“See you later, Christine” said Evan, softly chuckling as he started to make his way to the kitchen doorway.

“And thank you for the fish”.

“You’re welcome, Evan. And be careful!” replied Christine, calling back to him before Evan disappeared into the hallway, heading towards Lucy’s whale tank.

Once he arrived at Lucy’s tank, Evan set down the pail a few feet away from the pool’s edge, before he got down on one knee and created some splashes on the water’s surface with his hand.

“Come here, Lucy,” he called.

Lucy turned her head to look at him, but didn’t move.

Evan called her over to him a couple more times, but still she wouldn’t come.

Instead, she drifted over to the opposite side of the pool, away from Evan.

This whale really doesn’t want to cooperate, he thought as he observed the lonely killer whale.

Getting up to his feet, Evan turned his back to Lucy to go get an inflatable beach ball when suddenly, he felt a giant wave of water splash his back, completely soaking his wet suit.

Evan turned around to face the whale, with a smile on his face.

“You like to splash?” he asked in a soft sweet voice, talking to Lucy who is now on the same side of the pool as him.

The whale nodded her head enthusiastically.

Evan bent down onto his knees and continued to talk to the orca.

“You do?“.

Lucy nodded her head yes again, before she scooped up a mouthful of water and sprayed a stream of it into Evan’s face.

With his face now dripping wet, Evan spat out the water that got into his mouth and smiled warmly at Lucy, glad that he found a way to start making a connection with her.

However, when he reached down to splash the orca back, she suddenly dived underwater and zipped away from him, before resurfacing again on the other side of the pool.

Did I do something wrong?thought Evan, as he watched Lucy go back to slowly drifting around in her pool, far away from him.

He lightly splashed the cool water a few more times, before he gave up on trying to get Lucy to come to him and went to go document what he had just experienced.
