Gloria
I swear I can hear my phone ringing I just don’t know where it is. “Give me a minute……please don’t hang up” I toss my backpack from my bed. “There it is” I grab it to, I answer taking a deep breath.“Hey”
“What were you doing dude, I was about to hang up.” I sigh and flop on my bed, “sorry I couldn’t find my phone for a minute. What’s up Keirs” Keirstin is my bestie since high school, she’s a year younger than me. We call her Keirs because it’s just easier, “umm there’s this group thing happening tomorrow night and I was wondering if you can go with me?”
“What kind of group thing cause if it’s a party then I’m not going…..” she cuts me off, “relax would you, it’s a small worship night thing. I don’t wanna go by myself.”
“You could have just said that you know” she laughs, “so you coming.” I sit up debating whether I want to be social or not. “Ok fine, is there a dress code or something” she laughs on the other side of the phone, “no Gloria, no dress code.”
“Ok alright, now I have to go eat I’m hungry and tired, I’m gonna go to bed.” We talk for a few more minutes before I go and make myself some noodles and do my skincare and head to bed.
I wake up the next morning to my loud freaking alarm, I take a shower and get ready as I listen to some music. I make some breakfast, brush my teeth and grab my keys and head on out, I’m working as a CNA at the hospital and I start at 6am and get out at 2pm which sounds horrible…..cause it is but I love my job. I work with the kids which brings me so much joy. The day goes by fast probably cause I’m excited for tonight, anywhere with young adults and worship I love deeply.
“Gloria, Keirs is here” my mom calls out from the kitchen, “ok I’m coming.” I finish getting ready and head on out, “alright mom bye, I’ll see you later.” I close the door behind me and Keirs runs up and gives me a hug. “I didn’t know you were picking me up,” she smiles and grabs my arm. “I’m glad that you’re happy but come on we have to get going.” I roll my eyes at her and we both laugh, we jam out to music on our way there. We pull up to a huge house and my jaw just drops, “I know, it’s a really nice house right, wait until you see the inside.”
We walk in and the house looks so clean and organized, neutral colors and great scent. I turn to see that I’ve lost Keirs, I try to find my way back to her but clearly I’m lost. “Hey” I jump to the surprise of the voice behind me, “oh sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” I softly smile, “no it’s fine I just can’t seem to find where I’m supposed to be.” He laughs and he has the cutest dimples, “I’m Josh” he stretches his hand out, “I’m Gloria, it’s to meet you Josh.” I say as I shake his hand, “nice to meet you too Gloria, I’m guessing that you’re not here for a tour but for the worship night?” I laugh softly, “how did you know” he smiles “come on I’ll show you.”
We end up with the other people and I see Keirs sitting on the other side of the room with some other people so I decide to sit by myself by the back. “Is it ok if I sit beside you” I look up from my phone to see Josh, I nod “mhm that’s fine.” He looks at me and says nothing, “what?.” I ask with a tiny smile “nothing it’s just you said you were here with your friend and now you’re sitting alone.”
“You don’t believe me?”
“It’s not that it’s just……where’s your friend” he looks at me with a slight grin. I giggle before pointing over to the other side at Keirs, “there but I didn’t feel like talking to all those people so I sat over here. Besides why aren’t you sitting with your friends? Hm”
“Because we don’t let people sit by themselves around here, so I kinda had to come sit with you.” Before I can reply the music starts and we begin the night.
At the end I find keirs, “hey you ready to go home.” She shyly shakes her head, this is why I don’t go anywhere with her, she never wants to leave. “Ok well you’re my ride”
“I know but if you don’t want to stay then……maybe someone else can give you a ride?” I sigh, “ok, don’t do anything stupid. I love you” she gives me a hug, “I love you too, sorry babes.” I walk out and go sit on the bench in the yard, the fresh air feels nice. How I’m I supposed to ask anyone for a ride, I hate this. “We need to stop meeting every time you look lost” he sits beside me and I don’t even say anything. He taps my shoulder, “you ok?” I take a huge breath in, “yea just wondering whom I’m going to ask to take me home, I’m beat, I need sleep right now.” He laughs softly, I nudge him, “what’s funny.”
“You could have just asked me, come one I’ll take you home.”
“No you can’t I’ll just wait for my friend” he sighs as he stands, “look you seem like you’ve been working all day, and if you say that you’re tired then you have to go home and rest.” I look up at him, “ok but…” he pulls me up, “no buts, let’s go.” We walk over to the garage, “wait you live here?” He laughs, “yea, with my family. Now get in.” He opens the door of his car, I get in and surprisingly his car is very clean and smells really well. “Wow” he turns on the car, “wow?” He asks as he pulls his seatbelt over his shoulder, “it’s just that your car is cleaner than I thought that’s all.” He laughs turning on the music in the background, “have you never been in a guys car before? We don’t all have dirty smelling cars you know.”
“Never had a reason to get in a guys car” he kinda looks over at me blankly, “wait are you telling me that you don’t have a boyfriend!” I look at him with confusion, “I never said I had one, why is that a bad thing!”
“I….I mean I expected you to have a boyfriend, that’s all.” He backs up out of the garage, “I’ll take that as a compliment”
“So that mean you have an ex or something” I laugh at his question, “or something? What would be something. No I don’t have an ex” he puts on this face that looks lost and very confused, “so…..”
“So……I’ve never had a boyfriend before Josh.” We stop at the red light and he turns to look at me, I hadn’t noticed how pretty his eyes are. He has really soft skin, very healthy hair, the hazel eye and that darn smile of his. He looks perfect not to mention he’s fairly fit. He grins at me, “you want me to believe that you’ve never been in a relationship before? How is that even possible” the light turns green and he’s still staring at me. I turn his head, “go Josh.”
After a few minutes of silence he scoffs with a small grin, “I still can’t believe you’ve never had a boyfriend before.”
“Ok ok I get it, but can we change the subject? Please” with a nod he glances at me, “don’t get spooked but it’s just a genuine question……how old are you?”
“Umm….”
“Again no need to get spooked, I just can’t tell how old you are so I ask.”
“I’m 19”
“Oh ok, that’s good to know”
“Ok but how old are you”
“21”
“Hm” he laughs and looks at me, “hm? What’s that supposed to mean.” I laugh softly, “nothing I just didn’t think that you were 21 that’s all.”
“Ok” we pull up to my driveway and before I can get out of the car he gently grabs my wrist and points to his phone. “Since now we’re friends why not give me your number” I stare at him, “are we friends?” He stares back, “that’s what I thought, maybe not?”
I grab his phone which he already unlocked and put my number in, he texts me right away and I save it. “Ok then hopefully I’ll see you next week?” I slowly nod my head, “hopefully.” I get out of the car and I can feel his eyes on the back of my head, I get in the house and head on upstairs cause I just know my parents have questions about why a guy dropped me off when I left with Keirs. “Hey” they just look at me, “he’s a friend from the worship night, keirs didn’t want to leave yet so I asked him to drop me off.”
“That’s fine” they don’t ask anymore questions or say anything else, that’s weird.
