Chapter 1

(Catalina)

Born a werewolf, I was brought up thinking that the world was black and white, everything was as it should, until my fourteenth birthday, then all it became colorful and bright. I had powers no one could explain, animals could suddenly talk, and Latin words I didn’t know before became as clear as English. My parents are no longer here to console me, my grandmother and aunt did their best to raise me. Much of my childhood is absent from my memory, except that my mother was the most beautiful woman, she was kind and passionate, my father however, is all but a mystery to me. Now here I stand in my small cluttered room getting ready for an adventure that would change my life.

“Caty, I know you’ll love this school. There are people just like you there, it’s like a college for the supernatural.” My aunt Peony joked, placing my fully packed suitcase on the Floor. “How do you know, it’s not like you’ve ever been.” Peony sighed, “Look Caty your mom trusted me to look after you and she left a note saying to send you to this school once you were old enough, and I’ve fought it off this long, but your grandmother insisted it’s time to go, and I trust that your mom only wanted good things for you. Besides, you can’t go to a human college, you need to learn how to control your…gifts.” She hesitated, being on the receiving end of my ‘gift’ one to many times, when I first started getting my abilities I couldn’t control them. Any heightened emotion would unleash some form of my power, whether it was a glass shattering or catching the couch on fire, which freaked me out so much I hid in my room for a week. With a huff, I laid back on my bed and closed my eyes. “You leave tomorrow so get some rest.” I just nodded and waited for the door to click shut before hopping off my bed and grabbing my riding boots.

Sliding my window open I looked down at the two-story jump before climbing through the window. Before I jumped, I mumbled, “Ventus,” and jumped off the window and slowly floated down to the ground. Hitting the ground I started running towards the barn. “Phoenix, you awake girl?” I whispered, walking into my horse’s stable. ’It’s awfully late Catalina.” I chuckled slightly, “Phoenix it’s only nine.” She let out a huff, “Well that’s late for me, a horse needs her beauty sleep you know.” Rolling my eyes I saddled her up and walked her to the back of the barn.

Pushing open the back door I stopped in my tracks. “Gran, I was just…” She raised her hand, “Be back before midnight please.” She said, handing me a water bottle. “Thanks gran. I’ll be back soon I promise.” With that I put the bottle in my pack and mounted Phoenix. “Be safe my little Caty.” With a smile, I kicked my heel back softly and Phoenix started running towards the woods. I haven’t shifted into my wolf yet, so this was the closest I could get to the free feeling of running though the woods so fast the world fades away. I slowed to a stop once I reached the falls. “You want an apple, Phoenix?” I asked as my feet hit the ground, “Oh, yes please!” She gladly grabbed the apple out of my hand, with a smile I went to sit next to the water. I placed my fingers into the water and watched as it flowed around with the movement of my hand. After a few minutes of serene bliss I started to hear voices.

Standing up, I slowly walked over to Phoenix. “Someone’s coming.” Phoenix neighed pushing my arm with her head. “I know, now be quiet and stay here.” I lead her back to behind some tall shrubs, before walking a little closer to the water lifting my hand letting a small flow of water from the falls, feeling the water flow gently around my wrist. A figure stumbled out from the bushes, he was shirtless and had torn shorts with a mop of dirty blond hair. “Dude you should have warned me that there was a hill.” He growled out as another guy appeared, with short dark curls and a few inches taller than the other. “Sorry, but you should have watched where you were going.” I took a slight step back stepping on a stick causing it to snap. Both guy’s heads snapped towards me. “Who’s there? Show yourself!”

I took another step back only to run into a hard chest. “Well hello there.” I turned around quickly and came face to face with dark curls guy, gasping I jump back. “How did you get here so fast?” He laughed, “I’ll ask the questions here. Who are you and why are you on our territory?” My mouth was slightly open in shock as I realized I was in a werewolf packs territory. I should have guessed they were wolves. “What’s this?” The guy behind me reached for my hand and out of reflex I lifted it up and down making the water lash out cutting his cheek. “What the hell?!” He growled and stepped back and I quickly mounted Phoenix. “Let’s go!” I said making Phoenix fly forward towards the house. I looked behind me to see if the men were following and when I turned back two giant wolves stood in my path. Phoenix lifted her front legs making me fall off and land on the ground with a thud. Groaning I stood up looking over to where the men now stood. “That was a cool trick, how did you do it?” The dark-haired guy asked, “Why should I tell you anything? You scared my horse off.” I snapped taking a step back only to run into another hard chest, this one sent sparks flying down my back.

“What’s going on here?” Turning around, my breath seemed to catch as I looked into this new stranger’s eyes. He seemed to watch me with curiosity until dark curls snapped us out of our staring contest. “We were only playing, she was on our territory.” Blinking his eyes a few times he looked away. “How did your cheek get cut?” He asked, crossing his arms over his chest. “She did it. She used some kind of magic and made this water cut me!” With a shocked look, he looked back at me for a second. “Interesting. Anyway; let’s go, we’re needed back at the house.” The blondie stopped in front of me and handed the bottle back to me, it must have fallen out when Phoenix bucked me off. “I believe this is yours, it’s not good to litter you know.” He said with a small smirk before following the other two back into the woods. Confused, I started walking towards my house where I found Phoenix eating in the pin. “Catalina, what happened?” My gran asked, running over to me embracing me in a hug. “I’m fine, gran really I just had a little accident. A few squirrels scared Phoenix and I fell, it’s no big deal.”

With a sigh, she pulled away and placed her hand on my cheek. “Well let’s go inside, it’s late and you have school tomorrow.” I nodded and followed behind her into the house. “Goodnight little Caty.” Gran said, kissing my forehead before walking to her room. As I got to my room I laid down on my bed and sighed. This is it, I’m going to a new school and there’s no stopping it. I thought about the man from the forest, his vibrant gold eyes haunting me as I drifted off to sleep.
