Chapter 1

Beyond the horizon the sun was falling in a mix of colors that stretched and turned into the pale night sky. The rustle of leaves in the wind and different creatures serenading the moon, willing it to appear was the only thing to be heard, one could faintly see the moon and the brightest star high in the sky. The sun was seconds from disappearing just beyond where the eye can see but for a moment, there was silence… and then for a single second a bright flash of green light up the sky before the sun was gone. At that moment somewhere in the universe, there was a woman who walked back from the land of the dead.

On the other side of the world with a sharp intake of breath she awoke…

When penny opened her eyes the first thing she came to realize was, she wasn’t where she died. she lay completely still only moving her head to look around, penny soon found out she was surrounded by a smoothed wooden casket more than likely 6 feet deep.

This was an easy task, penny came back from the dead blessed with the knowledge of magic. A kind of magic long thought lost to humanity, taken with the fae when they left our civilization of death, destruction, war, and famine years ago. Although penny was never human to begin with…

Penny closed her eyes and focused, spoke the incantation while drawing various runes and symbols only she could see with her finger on the wood above her. She took a deep breath infusing her magic into her drawing and soon after she opened her eyes again and she was on her knees in a place she remembered but definitely was forgotten by anyone else who may have been in the area.

She finally made it back to her castle, only it wasn’t what she thought it would be. Her castle was in ruins only rubble and half a stone wall on the far north side stood. Looking around it was obvious by the human remains buried in ash something bad happened, something she didn’t know about, how could this have happened, it was her kingdom! Her responsibility! her people! Now all gone.. and all ash..

Penny walked over to the only wall that stood and sat down with her back to it, she closed her eyes took a deep breath and she wept, not only for the ones she lost, but for her kingdom, her people, the children who were orphaned or worse, the woman who found salvation within her kingdom only to lose their life, the men looking for a place let go of their past and start anew. All of it gone…

Penny sat against the wall like that until her tears had long dried, her stomach no longer growled in hunger, and her limbs ached to move. Shakily she tried standing, she turned with her side facing the wall and dug her fingers into the crumbling stone wall. Slowly she began dragging herself upwards until she was in a standing position with her shoulder against the wall.
