1 - Calling My Own Number

“You know, I heard this urban legend the other day. Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” I look up as my boyfriend Sam speaks, raising my eyebrow.

“Oh really? Dumber than the Mothman? Or that one you told me the other day? What was it…” I search for the dumb story Sam had told the other day, grinning at his incredulous look.

“The Mothman is real, Kai! My grandad saw him. And yes, this one is much more stupid than calling 911 and your phone instantly charging. Apparently, if you call your own number and someone answers, you’re cursed.” he says, matter-of-factly.

“Is that so?” I grab my phone and input my number. “Let’s see if I’m cursed then.” Hitting the call button, the phone begins to ring, and I’m sure nothing will happen, when it makes a click.

“Yes?” the voice comes through, hoarse and crackly. “Hello?”

Fear pierces my heart as I stare at Sam, making a shitting my pants face. He just scowls, thinking I’m taking the piss again. I frown and place the call onto speaker phone.

“Oh, fuck off Kai, I’m not falling for that agai-” he stops instantly when the voice on my phone speaks again, seemingly frustrated at the lack of response.

“Is there anyone there?” the voice asks, cracking as it speaks. “How did you get this number?”

After what feels like an eternity of silence, I finally speak. “Who is this?” my voice is small, barely above a whisper.

“Is this a joke? It’s Kai Hartman, who is this?”

My heart stops. This must be some kind of joke, I look at Sam and he looks just as terrified as I feel, though I try and mask my fear as I speak again. “Is this a joke? I’m Kai. Who are you really?” my voice wavers, betraying my fear.

“I’m Kai.” the voice says plainly, before a loud screech blares through the speakers. “You shouldn’t have called this number.”
