Strange Art
Every writer needs a little inspiration once in a while. For today’s prompt, write a story where something seems a little off in an art gallery.
Prompt by Moriah Richard
Loads of cars and limousines traveled late in the evening through he streets parked in front of the grand opening taking place in the gallery. People poured into the building wearing fancy dresses and suits. They filed into the lounge, their elegant figures reflected off the marble floors. A single hallway connected to the lounge and a young woman waited for them at the beginning of it. Straight, long, dark brown hair cascaded down her back. A sleek, dark blue gown clung to her tall, slim figure. Flowing ruffles formed at the end of the long sleeves and the bottom of the dress. Glimmering, silver bracelets wrapped around her chocolate skin. Dark brown glasses sat on top of her nose, her brown eyes shining behind them. A calm, welcoming smile formed on her lips.
“Hello, everyone.” She began in alight voice, ” Thank you for coming to the unveiling of my treasured collection. I’ve spent many years on this. So, I hope each and everyone of you can find one to your liking.”
A round of applause followed behind the end of her short speech. When the noise died down, the woman gestured with a hand towards the path behind her before walking down it. The click of her heels echoed throughout the room and more footsteps arose as the rest of the crowd followed her into the next area.
A wide gallery waited on the other end of the hall. Huge pictures hung off all four of the the light blue-colored walls. A small plaque sat underneath each one that held the name of the piece embedded in it. The woman lingered by the entrance and watched as everyone broke apart and congregated around the different works.
Some gathered in front of a tall portrait. Two people filled the image; a man and a woman. Chocolate skin colored the woman and long, brown hair fell down from her head. Her amber eyes glimmered gleamed bright with determination and a wide smile covered her lips. A red domino mask covered her face. A small flame burned from her fingertip that she held up near her lips, urging for secrecy. The man at her side wore a black domino mask over his dark brown face. Black, slightly curly hair fell down his back in a ponytail. Piercing, golden eyes stared back at the crowd. The title beneath the pair held the words Your Wish is Granted.
Others mingled around a landscape painting titled The Sisters of Gold. Two women sat on top of a rock in the center of a barren field, with the full moon shining behind them. Their skins gleamed as solid gold. Purple marking covered the body of one and markings of blue colored the golden skin of the other. Each had a pair of delicate, shimmering fairy wings attached to their backs that lay sprayed on the rocks behind them. One had wings like a dragonfly and the other had a pair like those of a butterfly. The two sat with their backs to each other but their hands joined together in a tight grip, as if it was them against the world.
Another piece showed the massive grandeur of a school building. Towering, white pillars led the way to the campus within. White and blue painted the tall structure and the letters ‘PA’ stood at the very top. The plaque named the image Powers Academy.
One of the guests looked on with a bewildered expression as all those gathered around the pieces stood completely still with eyes glazed over, as if in a trance. The man took a few cautious steps back and nearly bumped into the host of the gallery. The woman offered him a small smile.
“What happened to everyone?” Came his hesitant question.
“Nothing serious. They’re just engrossed in the worlds displayed.”
“...What does that mean?”
“You can find out.” She answered with a knowing smile, “Take your pick, and see the story that unfolds before your eyes...”
