Chapter 1
My name is Ruby. I do a job that most people consider strictly men’s work. Maybe that’s exactly why no one has ever caught me. I’m a professional assassin—but I don’t work for just anyone. I work for one person only—or perhaps I should say, one demon. Lucifer is my boss. I work for the devil himself. This is the deal I made with him. But I’m not just his hired killer—I’m also his wife. While his collectors gather the souls of those who have made bargains with him, I carry out the jobs that require a more personal touch. I love Lucifer deeply, but I always make sure he knows he doesn’t own me.
“Ruby, my sweet,” Lucifer called to me.
“Yes, Lucifer?” I replied.
“I have another assignment for you,” he said.
“Who is it this time? Who do you want me to eliminate?”
“He is even more wicked than the last one you dealt with,” he told me.
“Tell me why,” I asked.
“His name is Edward.”
“Where can I find him?”
He handed me a marked map. I looked closely and saw a circle drawn around a specific location—this was where I needed to go. Attached was a photograph of Edward. I knew I had to prepare myself and set off to complete the task. Once I returned, there would be another target waiting for me. One by one, I would kill for the man I love—my husband. And I would serve him faithfully.
