A Desperate Decision
As if Jamie’s sudden trip to Paris wasn’t enough to rock my world, life had another surprise in store for me. The day after our conversation, I received a letter from my landlord. My heart sank as I read the contents. They warned me that if I didn’t pay up soon, I would have to leave.
Panic clawed at my chest as I stared at the eviction notice. How had I let things get so out of hand? I had lost track of my finances, and now I was facing the very real possibility of losing my home.
I knew I had to act quickly, so I called my landlord and explained my situation. I promised that I would make arrangements to pay the overdue rent as soon as possible. They were sympathetic, but firm. They needed the money, and they needed it fast.
I began to go over my finances, trying to figure out how I could come up with the money I needed to keep my home. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was determined to find a way. I had exhausted all my options; in the end, there was nothing I could do.
An hour after the call, I couldn’t do anything either. Instead, I sat at the dimly lit bar, swirling my drink absentmindedly. The weight of my debt weighed on me like an anchor, pulling me down into the depths of despair. But I couldn’t tell anyone about this debt, not even Jamie. It had been seven years since Jamie and I started dating. But I couldn’t bring myself to tell him the truth about my financial troubles.
I struggled to find the right words. I had rehearsed the conversation a hundred times in my mind. But every time I tried to speak, the words got stuck in my throat. I didn’t want to burden Jamie, who was getting ready to leave for France.
Besides the apartment problem, my financial situation had taken a turn for the worse. A series of unexpected expenses and setbacks had left me nearly broke, drowning in a sea of bills and debt. I had always been independent, and the idea of burdening Jamie with my financial problems was not on my list. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust Jamie; it was my own fear and pride that held me back. He had his own dreams and aspirations, and I didn’t want my problems to derail his path.
But as I stared at my untouched drink, I couldn’t help but question my own actions. The plausible reason for not confiding in Jamie was my fear of vulnerability and my desire to protect him from my problems. Or I was afraid that my financial difficulties would change the way he saw me. I was afraid that he would feel obligated to rescue me when I longed to be on my own. Especially since he rejected my proposal a few days ago, I don’t want to tell him about my problems. What if he refuses to know? What if he leaves me when he finds out I’m in debt?
It felt like a dark cloud of uncertainty was hanging over my life. It was in this moment of despair that I remembered Niko’s proposal. I had rejected his offer because I thought it was unthinkable. But now, with the threat of eviction looming over me, I find myself reconsidering. I knew I couldn’t let pride get in the way of keeping a roof over my head.
With a heavy heart, I picked up my phone and dialed Niko’s number. My fingers trembled as I waited for him to answer. When his voice came through the line, I took a deep breath and gathered my courage.
With a heavy heart, I picked up my phone and dialed Niko’s number. My fingers trembled as I waited for him to answer. When his voice came through, I took a deep breath and gathered my courage.
“Hello!”
“Chantal, is everything okay?” he asked.
“Yes.” I paused for a moment. “Niko, I’ve been thinking, and I’ve decided to accept your offer.”
“What offer?”
“Your offer to have an affair with you.”
“Huh?”
“I am ready to have an affair with you.”
There was a pause at the other end of the line, and then Niko replied cautiously, “Chantal, are you sure about this? It’s not something to be taken lightly.”
I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me. “I know, Niko. But I’m in a difficult situation right now. I need help.”
“Okay, okay, where are you?”
There was a subtle urgency in Niko’s voice on the other end. “Wait for me,” he asked, and I could almost hear the tension in the way his words hung in the air.
I nodded, forgetting that he couldn’t see me. “Of course,” I replied, my heart beating a little faster with each passing moment.
An hour passed, marked by the subtle ebb and flow of the bar’s atmosphere. I had begun to wonder if Niko would show up at all when the door swung open with a muted chime. In walked Niko, his silhouette cutting through the surrounding haze. From his disheveled tie and the breathless urgency in his step, he seemed to be in a hurry to see me.
He scanned the room with an intensity that made my pulse quicken. When his eyes found mine, there was a fleeting glimpse of relief.
“Chantal,” he breathed. He walked toward me with a purposeful stride.
I stood, a mixture of emotions bubbling beneath the surface. “Niko,” I acknowledged, unable to ignore the anxious undercurrent in his eyes.
“I’m sorry to keep you waiting,” he said, sincerity lacing his words.
“No problem; I won’t be leaving soon anyway.”
I took a deep breath. “As you know, I’m drowning in debt. My rent is overdue, and I got a warning letter to pay up or leave by the end of the week. I didn’t know where else to turn,” I admitted, the words tumbling out with raw honesty.
He blinks, taking in the revelation. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” Niko asked with a hint of hurt in his voice.
I sighed, tracing the edge of my half-empty cocktail glass. “I didn’t think you’d understand, let alone help,” I confessed, a pang of guilt running through my words.
Niko leaned back and studied me with a look that held a hint of understanding. “An affair to solve your financial problems. That’s a pretty drastic step, Chantal.”
I nodded, the weight of my decision settling between us. “Desperate times call for desperate measures, Niko. I didn’t want to lose my apartment, and I didn’t know where else to turn. If having an affair with you behind my boyfriend’s back is what it takes, then…” I trailed off.
Niko leaned forward, his gaze unwavering. “Chantal, I’ve always been attracted to you. I won’t deny that. But I never wanted to put you in this position. Had I known the extent of your struggles, I would have found another way to help you,” he admitted.
I offered a small smile, the weight on my shoulders lightening slightly. I was relieved that he didn’t ask me why I hadn’t asked Jamie for help and decided to call him instead. He also didn’t give me a strange look when I asked him to be my affair partner.
“It’s not all on you, Niko. We both made choices, and now we have to face the consequences. I’m willing to consider your proposal if you’re still open to it.”
Niko’s face darkened, but he nodded. “All right, Chantal. I’ll help you, but on one condition. Our affair continues until I decide it’s over and I want to be treated like a friend; we’ll kiss even more.”
I hesitated; agreeing to these terms would mean compromising my morals even more. But I had no choice. “Fine. But I won’t let it affect my relationship with Jamie. This has to be discreet.”
Niko’s eyes bore into mine, and he nodded again. “Discreet it is then. I’ll get you the money you need. Deal?”
I nodded. “Yes, deal.”
The terms were uncomfortable and left me with a heavy sense of guilt and shame. I’d been immoral, having an affair, and trying to exploit Niko’s interest. I admit I was bad. I also knew I was risking my relationship with Jamie. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a way out of this mess that wouldn’t cost me my integrity and the love I had for Jamie.
