Chapter 1

The first-class cabin of the British Airways flight to London felt like a tomb. I sat in seat 2A, staring out at the lights of Johannesburg growing smaller beneath us, and wondered when exactly I'd become the kind of man who abandoned his wife when she needed him most.

The irony wasn't lost on me. I'd spent years building walls to protect myself from exactly this kind of pain, only to discover that the walls I'd built to keep hurt out had also kept love locked inside. Now I was thirty-five thousand feet above the Atlantic, running from the woman I loved because I was too much of a coward to face the possibility of losing her the way we'd lost our baby.

Our baby. The words still felt foreign, impossible. seventy two hours ago, I'd been a man with a pregnant wife and dreams of becoming a father again. I'd been too afraid to fully acknowledge. Now I was flying toward London with nothing but regret and the taste of ash in my mouth.

I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but every time I did, I saw Cassie's face when she'd given me that ultimatum. The way she'd looked at me like she was seeing me clearly for the first time, cataloging all my flaws and finding me wanting. She'd been right, of course. That was the worst part. She'd seen straight through to the truth I'd been trying to hide even from myself that I was using our tragedy as an excuse to do what I'd always done when things got too real, too risky. I was running.

The flight attendant offered me another whiskey, and I accepted it even though alcohol was the last thing I needed. My father had been a drunk, and I'd inherited more from him than just his middle name. The capacity for cruelty when cornered. The instinct to lash out at the people who loved me most when I felt trapped. The cowardice that dressed itself up as protection.

By the time we landed at Heathrow, I felt like I was drowning in my own skin. London in autumn was gray and cold, matching my mood perfectly. I took a black cab to the Langham, checked into a suite I could afford, and spent the first day staring at the ceiling and wondering what the hell I thought I was doing.

On the second day, I called my sister. I needed to balance things out.

"Greyson?"

Megan's voice was thick with sleep, and I realized I hadn't calculated the time difference properly.

"It's three in the morning. What's wrong?"

"I fucked up, ."

The words came out before I could stop them.

"I fucked up so badly I don't know how to fix it."

There was a long pause, and I could hear her moving around, probably getting out of bed and away from her husband so she wouldn't wake him.

"Where are you?"

"London."

"where is Cassie?"

The question hit me like a physical blow. "Johannesburg. At home...Or what used to be home before I destroyed everything."

"Greyson,"

Her voice was gentle but firm.

"Tell me what happened."

So I did. I told her about the pregnancy, about losing the baby, about the look on Cassie's face when she'd realized I was already planning my escape. I told her about the ultimatum, about the way I'd packed my bags while she slept in her sister's arms, about the cowardice that had driven me to book a flight rather than fight for the woman I loved.

When I finished, the silence on the other end of the line stretched so long I thought she might have hung up.

"You absolute fucking idiot,"

she said finally, and the venom in her voice made me flinch.

"Meg..."

"No, don't 'Meg' me. Don't you dare try to rationalize this to me, Greyson. You had a woman who loved you enough to marry you despite all your emotional baggage. You had a baby on the way. You had a chance at the kind of happiness Dad never let us believe we deserved, and you threw it all away because you were scared."

Each word was a knife, precise and devastating.

"You think I don't know that?"

"I think you know it intellectually, but I don't think you feel it yet. I don't think you understand what you've actually done." Her voice softened slightly.

"That woman just lost a baby, Greyson. Her body went through a trauma, her heart is broken, and instead of being there to help her heal, you abandoned her. You became exactly the kind of man you swore you'd never be."

The truth of it hit me like a sledgehammer. I thought of Cassie waking up alone in our apartment, discovering I'd left without even the courtesy of a goodbye. I thought of her sister's arms around her while I'd been thirty thousand feet in the air, running from responsibilities I'd been too weak to face.

"What do I do?" I asked, and my voice sounded broken even to my own ears.

"You go home," she said simply.

"You go home and you grovel and you pray she's a better person than you deserve. You go home and you prove to her that you're worthy of the second chance she might be willing to give you."

"What if it's too late?"

"Then you live with the consequences of your choices. But you don't give up without fighting, Greyson. You don't let fear win again."

After we hung up, I sat in my hotel room staring out at the London skyline and trying to work up the courage to book a flight home. Courage had never been my strong suit, and the thought of facing Cassie's disappointment, of seeing the love in her eyes turn to something harder and more final, kept me paralyzed.

I spent three more days in London, walking through Hyde Park and trying to convince myself I was processing my emotions when really I was just running out the clock on my own cowardice. On the fourth day, I finally bought a plane ticket back to Johannesburg.

The flight home felt longer than the one to London, weighed down with dread and the growing certainty that I'd waited too long. What if she wasn't there when I got back? What if she'd taken my disappearance as the answer to her ultimatum and moved on with her life?

I took a private taxi from OR Tambo directly to the apartment, my heart pounding as the elevator climbed to the penthouse. I fumbled with my keys, my hands shaking as I opened the door.

"Cassie?" I called out as I stepped inside.

The silence that greeted me was different from the charged quiet that had filled the space before I'd left. This was the silence of absence, of empty rooms and abandoned dreams.

I walked through our apartment like a ghost, cataloging all the ways it had changed in my absence. Her clothes were gone from the closet. Her toiletries had vanished from the bathroom. The books she'd been reading were missing from the nightstand.

In the kitchen, I found the only evidence that she'd ever been there at all—her coffee mug sitting in the sink, unwashed, with the faint ring of lipstick still visible on the rim.

The panic that rose in my chest was immediate and overwhelming. She was gone. Really, truly gone. I'd thought I'd been afraid of losing her, but that had been nothing compared to the terror of actually having lost her, of knowing that my own cowardice had driven away the best thing that had ever happened to me.

I called her phone. It went straight to voicemail.

I called Ella. She answered on the third ring, and her voice was arctic when she realized it was me.

"She's not going to want to talk to you, Greyson."

"Is she okay? Is she safe?"

"She's better than okay. She's strong. Stronger than either of us gave her credit for." There was a pause. "You really thought you could just disappear and come back when it was convenient for you? You left your wife O'Malley."

"I know I fucked up, Ella. I know I don't deserve her forgiveness, but I need to see her. I need to explain to her ..."

"Explain what? That you're exactly the kind of man she thought you might be? That when things got difficult, your first instinct was to run?" Her voice was sharp with protective fury.

"She gave you a choice, Greyson. She told you not to come back unless you were sure. Are you sure?"

The question hung in the air between us, loaded with implications I wasn't sure I was ready to face. Was I sure? Sure that I wanted to fight for this marriage, sure that I was ready to risk my heart completely, sure that I could be the man Cassie deserved?

"Yes," I said, and for the first time in days, the word felt true. "I'm sure."

"Then prove it, I didn't want to reconnect with my sister under such circumstances I wanted our relationship to heal on its own but then you came along. I just don't know what to do now and I usually know how to make her feel better she's a different woman "

"I love Cassie and nothing you say or change how I feel about her and I'm not leaving her so yes I will fight for but no I did not want you interviewing I get the video that something happened that I am not aware of but thank you for taking my call."

"Fine."

Ella said, and hung up.

I stood in our empty apartment, surrounded by the ghosts of conversations we'd had and dreams we'd shared, and tried to figure out how to prove something I'd never been able to prove to anyone, including myself. How did you prove you were worthy of love when you'd spent your entire adult life believing you weren't?

The answer, when it came to me, was simple in its complexity: one day at a time, one choice at a time, one moment of courage followed by another until bravery became a habit instead of an exception.

I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my contacts until I found the number I was looking for. Dr. Sarah Mitchell, the therapist Meg had recommended years ago, the one I'd never called because seeking help had felt too much like admitting weakness.

She answered on the second ring, and her voice was warm and professional. "Dr. Mitchell."

"Dr. Mitchell, my name is Greyson O'Malley. I think... I think I need help.Meg recommended you ..."

It was the first honest thing I'd said in days, and it felt like the beginning of something. Not redemption that would take longer and require Cassie's forgiveness, which I hadn't earned yet. But it felt like the first step toward becoming the kind of man who deserved a second chance.

If it wasn't already too late.
