A Heavy Burden

Ruby Morningstar, supposedly the daughter of the devil. Was she delusional? No, but the four men known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse might be. They had rushed into her life, claimed her for hell, and then set up camp. At first, she thought they were insane, that there was no way they could be right about her. She was just a half-succubus demon, nothing more.

Now she was coming around to the idea. It was hard not to after everything she had endured. One unlucky event after another had her sitting in her office staring off into nothingness. Her tattoo parlor was closed up for the night, her best friend had gone home, and she just couldn't make herself get up.

In this room, her safe space, she was taking a moment to herself. No one to ask her if she was okay a million times or try to solve a problem that wasn't theirs to unravel. Just Ruby, sitting in her own thoughts.

Then the door creaked open and in walked a tall, amber-eyed man with hair so dark his skin looked ashen. He would've passed for a normal guy if you just looked at his jeans and black sweater. As soon as everything else registered though?

His muscular, tall, handsome form. The cut of his jawline, the strength of the pull of his gaze. How he stood with the confidence of a god but the seductive air of a demon. He knew how badly she wanted him because he wanted her the same. They had been circling one another in an orbit all their own since the moment he met her.

Now he silently went to her, kneeling before her as she sat in her chair. No words were spoken as he looked over her emotionless mask of a face. He felt her pain like his own. He may not know exactly what she was going through, but he knew her. Her strength and independence would make it hard for her to ask for help.

He rested a hand on her knee and that's when she slipped out of the chair and fell to her knees before him. In a moment his arms were wrapped around her, her sobs rough and heartbreaking as she leaned into his chest. It was hard to see her breaking like this, but she had been strong for too long.

He held her close, one hand running over her loose black hair as her hands grabbed hold of his sweater. If he could take it all back and give her the life she had before all of this, would he? If it meant she would never meet them...him?

He would. In this moment, in all the moments where she was caused pain due to who she was and the men's presence in her life. He would turn back time in an instant for her. For her happiness and heart.
