Chapter 1

“BEEP BEEP BEEP!”

Leah groaned as she slammed her alarm clock off. Today was the start of the new school year at Maple Academy, an all girls boarding school. She sat up and yawned as someone opened her door and stuck their head inside her room. “Good morning sleepy head! About time you got up!”

The girl was tall and skinny and had long brown hair that was already tied into a braided messy bun. Her eyes were emerald green and they shone in the very little light that was coming from the closed curtains of Leah’s room.

“But it’s like 6 in the morning!” Leah groaned, falling back into her bed. “Actually, it’s 7 am, and don’t forget, classes start at 7:30!”

She jolted back up. “7:30?! Why didn’t you wake me up sooner?!” Vivianne, which was the other girl’s name, sighed. “I’ll leave you to get ready.”

Vivianne left the room as Leah jumped out of bed and started to frantically grab her uniform and get her hair down. She quickly brushed her brown hair and clipped it to the side, then put on some mascara to make her dull brown eyes more lively.

After she was done, she checked the time. 7:20. ‘Good,’ she thought. ‘I still have time for breakfast!’. She strolled out of her bedroom into the kitchen, where Vivianne was drinking a cup of coffee and reading a book at the counter. On the couch sat her other roommate, Ava, a short frail girl who had medium length blonde hair and light blue eyes.

“Mornin’ Ava!” Leah said as she shoved a piece of toast into her mouth that Vivianne had prepared for her. “And thanks for the toast Vivi!” Vivianne didn’t look up from her book but she smiled when Leah called her Vivi. They had recently met each other two months ago during the school’s summer break, since they both got sent to the Academy earlier than others, and had stayed friends ever since. She liked how close they’ve gotten. Her thinking got caught off as Leah hugged her from behind. “You’re going to help me with my classwork right?” Vivi was startled and was a bit flustered at the sudden action. She quickly shook it off and replied, looking over her shoulder, “I’m not your tutor you know,” she said jokingly.

“Pleaseee?” Leah said, squeezing her tighter. “Fine! Just… stop hugging me!”.

Leah laughed as she walked over to the couch to chat with Ava, who was silently watching them. Ava had recently moved in with them both and was really quiet and shy. Though she’s a very nice person.

A few minutes passed and Vivianne and Ava were already walking down the halls to their first class, with Leah running off to meet some other girls she had met. They luckily had the same homeroom, but after that, they split up.

The two girls entered the room. There was a lot of chattering and most of the desks were already occupied. The two walked to the middle row, where there were only three desks left. They didn’t talk much with each other, though they didn’t dislike each other either. “So…” Vivianne started. Ava looked up from her desk, where she was sketching on her notebook. “How are you today?”

Ava opened her mouth to respond but the bell interrupted her. Vivianne turned to face the door. ‘Where is she? She’s going to be late!’ she thought. Suddenly Leah came crashing through the door. “I’m here! I’m here-”

“Sit down young lady!” the professor snapped at her. Leah looked around the classroom to sit somewhere and her eyes landed on the chair next to Vivi. She smirked and walked over to her, sitting down.

Vivianne sighed. ‘This is going to be a long year…’ she thought.
