Chapter 1

Oliver kissed the top of Nora’s head as he lay down beside her. “I’m going to miss you,” he whispered.

Nora hummed as she was trying to go to sleep.

“Are you not going to miss me?” he asked.

“I’ll miss you too,” she responded.

“I’ll only be gone for three days, though,” he assured her.

Nora nodded as he turned away, his back facing her.

Oliver had just told Nora he would be going out of town for his job. Lately, he has been going out of town more and more. She doesn’t like it, because he has been spending less time at home but knows he is only doing it because he wants to make partner.

The next morning, Nora wakes up with a feeling of dread. She reaches over touching the cold side of the queen size bed letting her know Oliver has long gone. The room feels empty with only her in there. The light shining through the large windows and onto the white walls do nothing to help her shake the feeling of dread passing through her body. She chalks it up to knowing Oliver had to leave for work before she woke up.

After bathing, Nora slipped on her half-sleeved, V-neck, beige dress. It was not fitted, but she has always been a curvy woman, so the dress hugged her in all the right places. The beige dress stopped right above her knees, and she paired it with her closed-toe, ankle-strapped, nude heels. Her shoulder-length black hair was left hanging in soft curls. After applying a small amount of makeup to enhance her natural beauty, Nora gave herself a once-over in the mirror before leaving her house.

The feeling of uneasiness returned once she was in her office. Afraid that something may have happened to Oliver, she took out her phone and called him. Her worry multiplied when he didn’t answer. She was sure he wasn’t at the meeting yet since he should still be on the road driving. She texted him, knowing he wouldn’t be able to read it, but the car could read it to him while he drove.

She frowned as the message showed the text had been read but he was still not responding to her. Before she could do anything else, her assistant was calling into her office.

“Mrs. Nora, Mr. Silas is here to see you. I tried to tell him he needed an appointment, but he refused to leave until I called you.”

“Okay, Meg. Please send him in,” she said.

Nora was surprised to see Silas since he skipped dinner last night. Oliver and Silas were best friends, so it was only natural that she became friends with him and his wife, Sandy, too. Sandy still came to their house last night apologizing on behalf of Silas saying he was sick and couldn’t come. She didn’t mind though because it was a nice night of food and drinks with a friend.

Whereas Oliver had blond hair and blue eyes, Silas was his opposite with black hair and dark brown eyes. Oliver was tall, standing at 6’0 but not taller than Silas. Oliver never met a stranger and would make friends wherever he went. The ladies loved him, but he seemed to only have eyes for Nora. Silas stayed more to himself and was known to be quiet. They were the complete opposite but best friends.

Nora could tell something was bothering Silas because he didn’t give her his signature smile. She had gotten used to the way Silas smiled at her when they saw each other. Deep down, she felt like the smile was reserved for her. Silas rarely smiled, but when he did, his whole face would light up and his dark eyes would shine.

“Is everything okay, Silas?” Nora asks once he takes a seat in her comfortable mid-back soft lumbar, support pink chair. It was one of the most favorite things in her office. It was unusual for Silas to be in her office since he is a very busy man with his own company. He’s usually at work right now, so showing up at her office has Nora confused.

“No, not really,” he responds. They stare at each other as Nora tries to think what could be wrong with Silas. Even though she regarded Silas as a close friend, what could be wrong that he would come to see her first thing in the morning? Could something be wrong with Oliver? Is this why she was feeling such dread? All these thoughts plagued her mind until Silas cursed.

“Fuck,” he mutters, shaking his head. “Nora, yesterday evening I found out some information that’s going to shake up our lives.”

Nora began to bounce her knees while listening to Silas. It was a nervous habit she had that most people wouldn’t notice unless they really knew her. Silas stood and moved to the couch.

Pointing to the seat next to him, he instructed Nora to sit down. “Come here, Nora.”

She obliged, her knees bouncing again. Silas put his hand on her knee to calm her down. Oddly, she was thankful for his soft touch. It helped her calm down.

“Sandy has been acting weird these past few months. She’s been angry and rude for no reason. I suspect she was having a hard time at work, but Oliver assured me she was doing great. I still couldn’t figure out why her behavior at home was awful while when we went out with you guys, she was happy and excited. I hired a private investigator because her behavior was starting to worry me. I met with him yesterday and what he showed me left me speechless.”

By now Nora was even more worried and confused. Why did Silas come to her with this? And what could she do to help him? Silas moved his hand from her knee to her hands and held them tightly.

“Oliver and Sandy are sleeping together,” he finally said. Silas stared at her. Tears brimming her eyes as disbelief spread through her body.

She shook her head at him. “No. No way. He’s my husband, your best friend,” she whispered. “Oliver wouldn’t do this to me, to us. Please tell me you are playing some sick joke,” she choked out.

The serious look on Silas’s face told Nora that Silas was not playing. She hated that she knew he wasn’t lying but wished he was.

“I have the proof,” Silas stated. He was calm, as if he didn’t just give her some devastating news. Nora removed her hands from Silas’s while he continued to stare at her. She angrily wiped the tears from her eyes and cheeks.

“Are they together now?” Oliver had told her he had to go to an important meeting and would be gone for the next three days. Sandy worked in the same company as Oliver. She even helped her get the job by sprucing up her resume and putting a good word in with the CEO, Eddie.

He was a friend of her dad’s and treated Nora like she was his child. Her parents died when she was younger and his best friend, Eddie, and his wife took her in. Oliver refused to let her put in a good word for him to make partner. He stated he wanted to achieve it by himself, without her influence, and at that time she loved that answer.

Now thinking back at it, it was odd for him to say that. Oliver had no problem with her putting in a good word for him when he got the job. He even insisted she talk to her godfather, the CEO, so he could get a job with the company.

Silas pulled her out of her thoughts. “Most likely yes. Sandy claimed she had to leave for training. She has been going out of town a lot for ‘training.’”

“Does Sandy have location tracking on her phone? Oliver does and I’m going to check his now,” Nora stated. She pulled out her phone and checked Oliver’s location. Silas did the same and told her the coordinates for Sandy’s location.

They were at the same spot. Nora went to her computer and put in the coordinates.

She gasped as she stared at the screen. Silas moved behind her to see the screen.

“That bastard,” Nora groaned.
