Chapter 1: A Fight
Finn had been at work all day, from 6am to 7pm, and he was expected to come home then too, but he hadn't, his youngest son was turning 4 today. He needed to go to the grocery store for a gift for the little guy, he was picky with everything he played with, wore, ate, everything. It would take a while. He looked in plenty of different stores for a gift, perfect for his son in every way. He considered thousands of gifts by now, finding every reason not to buy them. After hours of looking, he finally settled on a small, stuffed shark, a simple gift that couldn't go wrong. Finn, proud of himself for finding a gift, bought a gift bag to put it in, at least it was better than nothing and he knew little Evander would want a surprise. With that, he finally drove home, ready to get some well deserved rest, and to see his son happy. It had been a rough day, and he had to deal with a lot. With a smile on his face, he drove home. After a few minutes, he pulled into his driveway, grabbing the gift and getting out of his car, walking up to the door, he attempted to open it.. It was locked. "Already?" He said to himself, and in a silent panic he started knocking on the door, he certainly wasn't willing to try to rummage for coins and find a payphone to call the house. So he knocked on the door for a solid minute, before going around and finding his bedroom window, hoping his wife would hear him and not end up attacking him, thinking it was an intruder, and luckily, she heard his knocking floating over to open the window for him. "Finn!" She whispered, although the strained anger in her voice was evident. "Do you have any idea what time it is? How late you've been out? What the hell!" She snapped, looking as angry as ever. "Martha!" Finn replied, sounding shocked at her sudden outburst. "Calm down, calm down. I wasn't out that long, why is the door locked?" Asked Finn, confusion evident on his face, all he wanted to get back in his own house, where it was warm and he could give his son his gift, but instead he got the warm welcome of angry wife and locked door. "Not that long? Not that long? Finn, I know your schedule, you get out of work at 7:00, and you're usually home at 7:12, it is 10:00! What the hell we're you doing? The boys are in bed, it was hell to get a 4 year boy who's screaming about how his dad forgot about his birthday and was never coming home settled down. Good job at that parenting thing, round of applause." Said Martha, absolutely infuriated and it was clear. Before Finn could jump to defend himself, she started up again. "Tell me, what was so important you had to miss your own child's birthday, that's all I want to know." Crossing her arms, she awaited a reply, ready to slam the widow in his face. "Martha, I was finding a gift for the little one, you now how he is, so picky with everything. I wouldn't miss it on purpose, I got distracted, I never pay attention to the time, I'm sorry, really I am just let me in and we can talk about this more inside, I don't feel safe out here at night and it's freezing." Finn pleaded, trying to make himself look like the victim, which would earn a sigh, facepalm, and shake of the head from Martha. "Alright, alright, fine. You can come in, but keep it down." With that, she slammed the window in his face, as she hoped to do, walking off to go open the door. Finn would jump back at the slam, but he would run around to the front, ready to be let in and to explain everything. Martha was never exactly the best person to try to reason with, but he had high hopes that she would understand and forgive. He had to admit, he was being foolish. He stood there for a second before the door shot open, an angry looking Martha standing in front of him with her arms crossed. Finn knew his wife, so he knew not to speak unless spoken to when he saw her look of dissatisfaction. He slowly and nervously walked in, moving past Martha and into the kitchen before Martha quickly slammed the door and got up in his face, whispering furiously as to now awake the children. "Now tell me, Finn. What was so hard about getting a gift for you own son?" She'd say, her words and stare sharp as daggers as Finn spoke up. "I just wanted to get the perfect gift for him, I just had a hard time picking it out because of his pickiness. You know how that kid can get I-" He was quickly cut off by his angry wife as she crossed her arms and whispered as loudly as she could and still be whispering. "I don't understand. It's not that hard to find a gift for a four year old. I'm not an idiot, Finn. You were doing something else, otherwise you wouldn't be acting like a stumbling idiot!" Accidentally raising her voice at the last bit, she would quickly turn around to be sure there weren't children coming. Luckily, there wasn't so she went on as quietly loud as possible, looking and sounding angry as ever. "Look Finn. If you want to go off and gallivant and run around town after work, I don't give two shits what you do unless you're with another woman, or unless you miss something important. Now, I don't want to make any accusatory claims here but.." She'd stop mid sentence and at that Finn would raise an eyebrow, looking angry now himself as be couldn't believe what he was hearing. "You think I would do something like that? Seriously?" His voice sounded shocked and angry as he spoke, at this point he wasn't even bothering to be silent. "Yes. Yes actually I do think you'd do something like that. You're that kind of person." The last bit was said with disgust, hurt and anger as Martha spoke, her tone more silent than Finn's as she was using a standard speaking voice as opposed to the louder tone of Finn's words. However, her words still seemed to cut deep as Finn spoke out again, his face scrunching up in anger. "I'm 'That kind of person'? Seriously, Martha? When have I ever done something that would even slightly hint I was running off being a some kind of man whore!?" Now yelling, his eyes and words would be angry as Martha took a step forward, raising her voice a bit now as well. "Shut your mouth. The children you don't love are sleeping." Finn's eyes would go wide at her statement and with a scoff he would lower his voice slightly. "Don't be stupid, Martha. I was out all night for Evander. Cannea we just forget this and move on?" He'd ask, tilting his head to side slightly as if that would make his pleas any more effective, it didn't work of course as Martha snapped back quickly. "Forget!? Did you actually just say that? That boy was crying for you all night, he wasn't able to enjoy anything! You selfish prick. I can't believe I married someone as insolent as you! Get the hell out of my sight. I don't want you here anymore." She'd say bluntly, looking dead serious as Finn looked a bit guilty, but regardless he smacked the bag with the gift for his son down on the kitchen counter before walking to his and Martha's shared room. "Where the hell are you going!?" Martha would shout throughout the house as noises of banging and rummaging echoed throughout the home. Finn was looking for a suitcase in the closet. "Away! Just like you wanted, you damn hag!" The words would make Martha even more furious as she didn't respond, she wasn't planning to respond again. Instead she went to go sit on the sofa, her elbiws on her kneed as she slumped over and put her face in her hands, sitting there in frustration but not wanting to argue. Glad to see Finn leave but also so hurt as she heard the noises of frantic digging through chests and closets and about fifteen minutes later Finn would march out from the back, walking tothe door and looking over to Martha for a second and speaking to her harshly. "I hope you have a good life, Martha Concord." He'd then strom out, slamming the door and leaving the house silently, Martha returning to her now half empty bedroom. She was regretting her decision already. However, just outside Finn had began running diwn the street, feeling a certain sense of power. He had just left behind his wife and children, and he felt good.
