The Dream
Bernard's heart sank as he received the call from his mother the next day, delivering the devastating news of his father's sudden passing. Guilt and heartbreak engulfed him, knowing he had canceled their dinner plans to go out drinking with friends.
That night, tormented by the weight of his decision, Bernard fell into a fitful sleep. In the realm of dreams, he found himself in a familiar setting—a restaurant where his father patiently waited at a table.
"Dad, I'm so sorry," Bernard whispered, tears welling in his eyes. "I never meant to miss that dinner."
His father, understanding and compassionate, simply nodded. "Life is unpredictable, son. We can't change the past, but we can cherish the moments we have now."
Bernard's guilt lingered, but his father's presence provided a bittersweet solace. As they talked, his father extended an unexpected invitation. "How about we make up for that missed dinner? Friday night, just like you promised."
Determined not to let this opportunity slip away, Bernard took a few sleeping pills that Friday evening to ensure a rendezvous with his father in his dreams.
In the dream, the restaurant sparkled with a surreal glow. Bernard and his father sat across from each other, surrounded by an otherworldly ambiance. The dream felt tangible, as if they were truly sharing a meal.
As they conversed, Bernard couldn't help but express his regret once more. "I wish I could have one more chance to make things right."
His father, smiling warmly, reassured him, "Bernard, I hold no grudges. Life is too short for regrets. Treasure the moments you have now and carry our memories with you."
Suddenly, the atmosphere shifted. A shimmering doorway appeared, casting a radiant light. Bernard's father stood up, gesturing towards it. "It's time for me to go, but remember, our connection is timeless."
As they walked toward the doorway, Bernard felt a mix of emotions. His father paused, looking back with a twinkle in his eye. "Our bond doesn't end here. Look to the stars, and you'll find me there."
With those words, they stepped through the doorway, and Bernard woke up. The room was bathed in morning light, and a sense of peace washed over him.
From that day forward, Bernard carried the memory of the dream, finding solace in the cosmic connection he shared with his father. Every starlit night became a silent dinner, a conversation with his father across the vast expanse of the universe. The bond, forged in dreams, transcended time and offered a spectacular and everlasting connection.
In the days that followed, Bernard carried the wisdom gained from his dream into the waking world. He began to appreciate the fleeting nature of time and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
Inspired by the celestial dinner in his dreams, Bernard initiated a new tradition. Each Friday night, under the starlit sky, he would set a place at the table, symbolizing the continued connection with his father. He invited friends and family to join, sharing stories that celebrated the essence of those who had left and the impact they had on their lives.
Through this ritual, Bernard found healing and a profound understanding that love, though sometimes interrupted, endures. The stars overhead became not just points of light but reminders of the enduring bonds that surpass the boundaries of life and death.
As time passed, the Friday night gatherings became a source of comfort and inspiration for everyone involved. Bernard's journey, marked by loss and redemption, taught him that even in the face of regret, the resilience of love could transform sorrow into a meaningful and shared celebration of life. And so, beneath the cosmic canopy, Bernard found solace, connection, and the enduring beauty of love that transcends both dreams and reality.
