Chapter 1

“No! Leave me alone!” I scream as I turn around to run back into the diner I work at, big hands grab me hard by my shoulders and pulls me back. ‘I will for sure have bruises later’ I think as he pushes me against the cold brick wall roughly and keeps me pinned against it, his whole body pushing against mine, his warm rotten breath in my face causing my eyes to burn. He was waiting for me outside after my shift at the diner I work at. I always take out the rubbish to the bins in the alley. It’s already eleven at night and that means not a soul around for kilometers.
Diego, my boss is a giant of a man, who for the past week has been making passes at me. I refused him every time because even I have my standards. Even if I’m broke and almost living on the streets. A girl at least has to have her pride.
Thinking to myself that he is on the bigger side and not that young anymore, I could outrun him. I push back hard from the wall and hope I catch him off-guard so that he isn’t too steadfast, then I can turn around and run away. After I turned and before I could run ‘Whack!’ a hard hand connects with my cheek and I only feel the burn after a few seconds “Bitch!” he yells at me
I clench my teeth tightly to try and keep the pain inside, ‘How did I ever think this giant of a man was nice? He was only nice when he thought he could get something from me’
“Please” I whisper softly, “please let me go, I won’t tell anyone. I will go away, you won’t see me again” I beg with all my might “Please don’t hurt me.”
Whack! Another slap to my face “Nah, girly! Ya think you’re too good for me? Well you’re not!” he yells into my face. His face is red and it looks like he might explode any minute with a vein in the middle of his forehead, looking ready to pop! Whack! Another slap lands on my cheek.
A big rough hand grabs my throat and starts squeezing. “What do ya have to say for yourself? Ya tease! Not so brave now are ya?!”
“Please” I choke, my airway being squeezed tight and my air supply diminishing “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to lead you on.” I say hoarsely.
“Nah! Ya knew what ya were doing!” he shouts into my face.
“Please just let me go, you don’t want the aftermath of this on your hands. Just walk away.” I croak.
He lets go of my throat and I fall to the ground, hard. I struggle for air and cough a few times, some blood coming out of my mouth in the process. I pray that he just leaves as the cold creeps onto my hands and bare legs. I’m on my hands and knees, trying to get up when “Oof!” Pain soars through me as a booted foot connects with my ribs, tears burning my eyes. I’m trying to be strong and not cry. I’m really working hard to keep the scream of unbearable pain inside. Another kick to the ribs and another. I’m getting weak and I can’t keep it in anymore, almost passing out from the pressure of the scream that suddenly rips out of me and I sob for him to “Please stop!” my eyes are closed tightly as I hoarsely beg him to “Please, please stop.”
I hear a faint yell, but I don’t register who it is or where it is coming from.
“Bitch! Now ya did it!” He sneers angrily at me.
Another yell comes from far away.
“Fooksakes!” he exclaims as he kicks me again “You should have just given me what I wanted, ya little tease!” he growls into my face as he holds me up by the collar of my filthy uniform. Then he throws me back down to the ground and the force of the fall makes me hit my forehead against the asphalt hard and I cry out in agony.
I anticipate another kick, but they don’t come, or am I just not feeling them anymore?
Shocked, I open my tightly squeezed eyes and look up to see that he has gone.
My vision is starting to become blurry and there is pounding in my head, darkness is nearing and I am struggling to keep my eyes open. Is my mind playing tricks on me? Am I imagining that he has left? My whole body has gone numb from the pain and cold and I just want the darkness to end. ‘Take me away now darkness, I’m ready to go.’
“Hey!” I hear from another voice “Hey, are you alright?” the softer, kinder voice questions
I look up to see the most beautiful green eyes, concern pulling between them. Full lips moving, but I don’t hear the sound anymore, there is a thumping in my head and it’s getting worse. I close my eyes for a second to try and clear the fog accompanying the thumping, I open them to see those lips still moving, concern evident in those eyes. Darkness is coming and I can’t stop it. I close my eyes and let the darkness take over as a whispered “Thank you.” leaves my lips.
The last thing I see before I pass out is soft worried green eyes full of concern.
