5/5 Glitters for Truth, Realism, and Heart

"In "Chop's Closed," Fatma Durmush presents a unique and thought-provoking take on horror that transcends traditional scares and delves into the unsettling realm of realism. The narrative skillfully unravels a nightmarish world where societal prejudices based on one's sexuality, economic status, or perceived worth determine one's fate. As a reader, I was blindsided by the horror of this stark, oppressive reality. The brilliance of this story lies in its ability to expose the greatest form of horror — the systemic oppression ingrained in a society that devalues individuals based on factors beyond their control. It goes beyond the conventional boundaries of horror, pushing readers to confront a chilling truth: the horror of living in a world that cares more about one's economic status than their humanity. The narrative navigates through the intricacies of daily life, where every aspect, from managing payments to menial tasks like picking up trash, is a reminder of the harsh, unforgiving system at play. "Chop's Closed" unfolds as a harrowing exploration of an oppressive society where the ruling elite thrives at the expense of those deemed disposable. As a person of color who has witnessed and grown numb to the insidious effects of racism, the story resonates deeply. However, it extends beyond racial boundaries, offering a powerful commentary on the broader struggles faced by anyone deemed 'other' in a society driven by a skewed definition of value. This short story serves as a wake-up call, challenging readers to confront the uncomfortable truth that systemic issues surpass mere distinctions of race, gender, or social standing. It compels us to question the side we stand on and the actions we take in a world that often prioritizes individual gain over collective well-being. For its ability to provoke profound self-reflection and shed light on the darker corners of societal structures, "Chop's Closed" earns a resounding 5/5 Glitters. Fatma Durmush's narrative is more than a horror story; it's a potent catalyst for contemplation and a call to action against the very real horrors embedded in our world. While the grammar and writing style at times were not, the best. I feel this was only because of Translational differences and I was able to over look it to enjoy this wonderful story."
