Delicately running her hands down the wedding gown perfectly fitted to her body Lennox appraised her appearance the dress an exquisite masterpiece adorned with intricate lace patterns that delicately weave across the bodice and sleeves. The lace, fine and elegant forms a harmonious dance of floral and geometric motifs, adding a touch of timeless romance.
The gown’s silhouette a flowing A-line is accentuated by the lace, creating a blend of sophistication and grace. The sweetheart neckline showcases the intricate details, framing her collarbone with sheer elegance. As the gown cascades down, a subtle train embellished with lace motifs trails behind her leaving a lasting impression of refined beauty.
A soft, wistful sigh escaped her lips as she glided towards the door. Her reflection in the mirror showed a stunning bride, every detail of the wedding would be exuding luxury and glamour. While she loved Lucas, she couldn’t help but wonder what her life would be like if her family’s status in society didn’t dictate her every decision. The melodic strains of the wedding march began to fill the air, accompanied by the sounds of bustling activity as the choreographer prepared for her grand entrance. Lennox’s heart raced with anticipation and nervousness, wondering if she was truly ready for this new chapter in her life.
As a teenager, Lennox would lounge by the pool with her friends, discussing their dream wedding days. They would swoon over eligible bachelors and plan out every detail, from the flowers to the dress. But now as she stood at the altar surrounded by hundreds of strangers, nerves and sadness washed over her.
During her first year of college, Lennox indulged in the lavish lifestyle that any wealthy socialite would. Parties, expensive belongings, and enjoying being young were all part of her daily routine. However, things changed when her grandfather fell ill. Unlike her father’s family who preferred to keep to themselves and travel the world on a luxurious yacht with no room for grandchildren, her mother’s parents adored their grandchildren and visited frequently. Despite losing her beloved wife, while away at college Lennox’s grandfather would call her every week to check in.
With genuine concern in his voice, Wentworth Kensington would ask his granddaughter, “How are you doing today, Princess?“. To him, his only daughter and her children were the most important things in his life. This was a rarity for someone who came from a long line of wealthy elites. Wentworth adored all of them, but Lennox held a special place in his heart as his favorite.
Lennox brushed away a stray tear from the corner of her eye, wishing her grandparents could have been there to see her now. She remembered how her grandfather had always wanted her to slow down and focus on building a successful career outside of her family’s sphere of influence. She hoped that becoming a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and marrying into another influential family in the city was exactly what he had hoped for, and that it would make him proud.
The choir’s melodies enveloped her, resonating through every inch of her being. The harmonious ensemble was so powerful that it drowned out the sound of her own racing heart, as Lucas Thorne stood regally next to Lennox. His sandy blonde hair was expertly styled, accentuating his defined jawline and handsome features. As he gazed at her with his piercing blue eyes, Lennox felt a warm blush spread across her cheeks. She couldn’t help but be captivated by his commanding presence and undeniable charm.
As the priest’s voice drifted away, Lennox gazed around the small church, she couldn’t help but notice the empty seats where her family should have been seated. Her parents along with her older brother, sister, and their families had been visiting her father’s parents who had no interest in the marriage, and likely would not be able to make it in time for the ceremony. Lennox had flown back early on her own to finalize the wedding preparations - a rushed affair at the insistence of Lucas’ mother. No doubt she was eager to secure the future financial gains that would come along with her son’s marriage into the esteemed Stirling family. The weight of expectations and familial politics hung heavily in the air as Lennox prepared to take her vows, knowing that this union would bring more than just love and happiness into her life.
Lennox was well aware that her mother was ecstatic about the idea of her getting married. She had always dreamed of Lennox giving up her residency at the hospital and becoming a stay-at-home housewife, spending her husband’s money and gossiping with the other women in their social circle.
Lucas noticed Lennox’s worried expression and gave her a comforting smile, assuring her that even though her family wasn’t there, they were happy about the marriage. After all they were the ones who arranged the relationship in the first place.
With a forced smile, Lennox took a deep breath and tried to push away the sinking feeling in her stomach. She knew it was common for important events to be missed due to conflicting schedules, but she couldn’t shake off the disappointment of her family’s absence. Maybe the flight really did run late, or maybe they just didn’t prioritize her wedding. Despite her doubts, she had to continue with the nuptials and pretend everything was fine for Lucas’ sake. But deep down, she couldn’t help but feel conflicted.
Lennox blushed as Lucas’s arm wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her closer to his body during their first kiss as husband and wife. The guests erupted in cheers and applause, but Lennox couldn’t shake the nerves that had been building in her stomach all day. She smiled at Lucas, hoping he couldn’t feel the trembling in her hands.
Lennox wasn’t exactly sure how to process the fact that she was now officially Mrs. Thorne. She hoped that any reservations or uncertainty would dissipate as she and Lucas strolled hand in hand through the bustling crowd, on their way to the reception where she longed to see her family.
The reception hall was a grand spectacle as was expected of a marriage between two families of that caliber, adorned with extravagant floral arrangements and sparkling chandeliers. Lennox’s breath caught in her throat as she entered the room, the sea of guests parting to make way for the newlyweds. The soft melody of violins filled the air, adding an air of elegance to the scene.
Lucas held onto Lennox’s hand tightly as they made their way to the center of the room, where an opulent table awaited them. Their names were intricately engraved on golden place cards, a stark reminder of the merging of their two families and their new life together.
As they took their seats Lennox couldn’t help but scan the room, desperately searching for familiar faces. But among the sea of strangers, her family was nowhere to be found. Doubt and sadness washed over her once again, threatening to dampen what should have been a joyous occasion.
Lucas leaned in close to her, speaking softly and reassuringly. “Don’t worry, I’m sure your family will be here soon,” he said with tenderness in his voice. He didn’t want their wedding day to be marred by any upset or disappointment. Lennox forced a smile, grateful for Lucas’s optimism. She wanted to believe him, to hold onto the hope that her family would arrive and make everything right. But deep down, she couldn’t shake off the sinking feeling in her heart.
As the reception continued, Lennox found herself engaged in polite conversations with Lucas’s acquaintances—distinguished businessmen, influential socialites, and prominent figures within their circle. They lavished praises upon the newlyweds but despite their kind words, Lennox felt like an imposter—a pawn in a game of power and prestige.
The night wore on and still, no sign of her family. With each passing moment her disappointment grew more palpable. She couldn’t help but wonder if her marriage was just another chess move orchestrated by her parents and Lucas’s mother. Was she merely a means to secure wealth and status?
Lennox’s mind was eventually fully occupied by the delightful chaos of her and Lucas’ cake-cutting ritual, smearing frosting on each other’s faces as they laughed with pure joy when a familiar voice pierced through the crowded room causing her to snap back to reality. She looked up to see Lucas’ mother, Julienne Thorne rushing towards them. Her sandy blonde hair framed her heart-shaped face, accentuating her rounded eyes. While she may not have been considered the most beautiful woman, she exuded a quiet confidence and poise that commanded respect in high society. However, in that moment her usually composed demeanor was replaced with one of fear and uncertainty.
“Lennox, Lucas,” Julienne called out, her voice laced with urgency. “I just received a distressing phone call. There’s been an accident.” Lennox’s heart skipped a beat, the sinking feeling in her stomach intensifying, she exchanged a worried glance with Lucas their hands still entwined.
“What happened?” Lucas asked, his voice filled with concern.
“It’s your family,” Julienne replied directing it towards Lennox, her voice trembling ever so slightly. “There’s been a car crash. They were on their way here... to the wedding.”
The room fell into an eerie silence as those words hung in the air. Lennox’s mind raced, her heart pounding in her chest. Thoughts of her family’s absence suddenly felt insignificant compared to the gravity of this tragic news.
Lucas tightened his grip on Lennox’s hand as he led her out of the reception. Leaving his father to deal with the inquisitive guests, they followed Julienne outside into the cool night air. As they stepped out onto the busy street, she heard someone call out her name turning her head she saw a man approaching them his jaw was visibly tense, and his eyes filled with emotion. Lennox realized it was Brady Harris her father’s longtime friend and the family’s lawyer.
“Miss Sterling, I apologize for having to deliver this news,” the man began before Lennox’s emotions overtook her and she let out a loud cry, unable to contain her distress any longer.
In the reception area, Lucas’s father was struggling to maintain composure as guests bombarded him with unanswerable questions from all directions. Anderson Thorne had been a businessman his entire life, tirelessly building upon the legacy of his father’s company to transform it into a massive corporation that gained him access to the most exclusive and affluent circles. When Anderson’s wife proposed the idea of their son marrying Lennox Stirling, an heiress to both the Stirling and Kensington fortunes he couldn’t help but see dollar signs and potential political power. With the backing of the influential Stirling family’s media empire, Anderson could envision himself running for parliament and easily dominating his opponents. However, the news they had just received threatened to unravel all of his efforts and ambitions in an instant.
Julienne Thorne was in a state of panic as she waited outside the hotel for a car to take them to the hospital. If Lennox ended up being the sole survivor of the Stirling family, it would have disastrous consequences for Stirling Media and potentially cause a stock market crash. The only silver lining was that Lennox could inherit the family fortune, but at her young age the board members made up of distant relatives would surely not allow her to become CEO. It could be years before she saw any of the money as the board members would likely prioritize their own profits over Lennox’s success. This would also put pressure on the Thorne family to support her and invest in Stirling Media, something they were not willing to do.
Lennox sat in the rear seat of the car; her hands buried in her hair with Lucas sat beside her, his hand softly stroking her knee as he struggled to comprehend the gravity of the situation. It had only been a few hours since they exchanged their vows and shared their first kiss as husband and wife. The memory of saying “I do” still fresh in his mind before their joy was shattered by the terrible news.
Brady Harris had served as the Stirling family’s lawyer for over a decade, witnessing not only Lennox’s growth but that of her two siblings as well. The news of the accident weighed heavily on his heart, knowing them as friends. “Miss Stirling” he addressed her calmly placing a hand on her shoulder as they stepped out of the car and approached the hospital entrance. She looked up at him with her almond-shaped golden-brown eyes filled with tears. “Thorne, Mrs. Thorne” Lucas Thorne corrected him, but Brady paid little attention as he ignored the man desperately clinging to the distressed woman beside him and addressed only her.
With a trembling voice, he delivered the news of casualties from the crash. Lennox felt her whole world shatter in a matter of seconds. Just moments ago, she was filled with excitement for the future and her new marriage, but now she was plunged into a state of shock and disbelief. Her mind couldn’t comprehend the sudden turn of events that had sent her life spiraling out of control. She didn’t know how to process this reality that seemed so unfathomable just moments ago.
In the midst of the hospital’s frenzied atmosphere, a familiar voice called out “Lennox!” one of the emergency room staff that was familiar with her had been trying to alert her of their arrival, she looked up to see her father Alexander Stirling and her 2-year-old niece Isabella being wheeled through the doors, the only survivors from the tragic crash. Medical staff rushed around them tending to their injuries. Her mother, siblings and their partners were all gone along with the driver who had caused the accident.
There had been no time or thought put into changing their outfits Lennox, Lucas and his mother had all immediately headed straight for the hospital they received many glances from people at their attire, but Lennox didn’t care people could think what they wanted in that moment all she cared for was to see her father and niece alive.
Trying to calm her racing heart Lennox took a deep breath and made her way through the emergency room her luxurious gown swaying around her ankles as she walked, she reached the administration desk her voice shaking as she asked to speak with someone about her father and niece’s conditions.
The nurse behind the desk glanced up from her computer, her tired eyes meeting Lennox’s anxious gaze. Her mouth formed a sympathetic smile, but her eyes revealed the weight of the news she held.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Thorne” the nurse began her voice gentle yet laced with regret. “But I can’t release any information about your father or niece’s conditions at the moment. We’re currently understaffed and the doctor on duty is attending to multiple emergencies.”
Lennox’s heart sank further, a flicker of disappointment dancing across her face before she quickly composed herself. She had known deep down that this would be the case, that simply being a doctor at this hospital would not grant her special privileges. But a small part of her had clung to a glimmer of hope, hoping that fate would align in her favor during this difficult time.
Lucas tightened his grip on Lennox’s hand, offering silent support as he stood beside her. He understood her anguish he himself had been feeling a mixture of emotions since the moment they had been given the news. To Lennox it had felt like a lifetime they had been waiting but in reality, it had only been a number of hours when a familiar voice called her name across the waiting room.
“Lennox Thorne” the voice called again, she glanced over to see her friend and colleague Theo known by his full name as ‘Theodore Pembroke’ calling out to her, the two had been close friends for years studying at the same medical school and gaining residency at the same hospital and at one point in time Lennox had harbored a small crush on the handsome young doctor.
At the sound of her name, Lennox, Lucas, and Brady Harris all sprang up from their seats, followed closely by his mother. They hurried towards the doctor, bombarding him with questions.
“Doctor Pembroke, what’s the condition of my father and niece?” Lennox asked anxiously, her voice trembling with emotion.
Theodore Pembroke with his tousled brown hair and kind eyes, looked at Lennox with a mix of sympathy and concern. He took a deep breath before responding, carefully choosing his words.
“I’m sorry, Lennox” he began softly. “Your father is in critical condition. He sustained multiple injuries including severe head trauma. We’re doing everything we can to stabilize him, but it’s too early to determine the extent of his injuries.”
Lennox’s heart sank at the news. She could hardly process the thought of losing her father, her pillar of strength and guidance. Tears welled up in her eyes as she tried to hold back her emotions.
“And Isabella?” Lucas asked, his voice filled with worry.
Theodore sighed heavily before continuing. “Isabella is stable for now, but she suffered a broken leg and a few minor bruises. We’re monitoring her closely, but she will need further examination and treatment.” Lucas let out a sigh of relief at the news of Isabella’s stability, but his concern for Lennox’s father still hung heavy in the air. Brady Harris standing quietly behind them stepped forward and addressed Theodore. “Do you know when we’ll be able to see them?” he asked, his voice firm yet laced with desperation.
Theodore hesitated for a moment before responding. “I know this is difficult, but I can’t give you an exact timeframe. The doctors are doing their best to stabilize Mr. Stirling and Isabella needs rest before we can allow visitors. I promise to keep you updated as soon as there’s any change in their conditions.” Lennox felt a mix of frustration and helplessness wash over her.
She couldn’t bear the thought of being separated from either of them.
