Summary

MUERTE

No recuerdo exactamente aquella noche. An-

tes, cuando intentaba hacerlo, tenía la sen-

sación que esa vez estábamos solo mis pa-

dres y yo en todo el mundo; disfrutando de

malvaviscos chamuscados en la casa donde vivíamos antes de mudarnos.

Ahora sé que en realidad éramos cuatro

alrededor del fuego.


No sé por qué me estaban explicando el

significado de estar muerto, el punto es que

les hice una pregunta:


–¿A dónde voy a ir cuando muera?

Tardaron en responder hasta que mamá

comenzó a decirme que las mascotas que

habíamos tenido y murieron, siguen vivas en

nuestros pensamientos, y con la gente pasa

lo mismo.


–Entonces, cuando uno muere, ¿sigue

vivo? –volví a cuestionar.


–No, no exactamente.


–Pero eso fue lo que dijiste –repliqué a mi

madre.


Habiéndolos metido en aquel aprieto,

papá decidió tomar la palabra:

–Cuando mucha gente se acuerda de ti

es como si siguieras vivo, pero tú ya no debes

preocuparte de algo que tengas que hacer.

–Pero cuando recuerdo a las mascotas no

las puedo abrazar… y ellas ya no pueden jugar conmigo.


Se miraron y cambiaron de tema. Desde

ese día fue creciendo lentamente en mí el

miedo a ser olvidada.


Para cuando cumplí doce años decidí que

debía hacer algo para sorprender a quienes

me conocían, de esa forma nunca me olvida-

rían. Entonces me di cuenta que cuando esas personas murieran, mi recuerdo también lo

haría.


De modo que, si no quería que con mi

muerte se acabara todo, debería sorprender

al mundo entero, entonces escribirían mi

nombre en piedra. Luego me di cuenta que,

con el paso del tiempo, la gente solo recor-

daría mi nombre y no a mí, es más, la piedra

podía ser despedazada.


Cuando tenía doce años me resigné a la

idea de que, una vez muerta, no volvería a

pasar nada conmigo, pues creía que no exis-

tía alguien eterno para que me recordara por

siempre.


Fue cuando conocí a Daleth que mi pers-

pectiva cambió y, aunque no confío en ella, confío en lo que dice el libro que me regaló, a fin de cuentas no es ella quien lo escribió. La muerte no es el fin, y tampoco estamos condenados a quedarnos únicamente como un recuerdo.

Sin embargo, aun sabiendo lo que sé, no

quiero morir. Siento que pasará pronto y la-

mento que suceda así.

No conozco a Greg Carlton, no debería

tener pesadillas con el Viejo, el Muñeco y

el Espejo ni con ese horroroso Perro Negro,

además ni Edgar Alemán y mucho menos

ella deberían ser parte de esto.

Toda la historia está segura en la caja im-

permeable del Árbol Matriz, pero dudo mu-

cho que alguien la sepa alguna vez.

Mi familia estará a salvo, eso dijo Marcus

y confío en él, de hecho, siento más que con-

fianza cuando está conmigo.

No sé si debería estar haciendo las cosas

como las hago, pero aquí estoy, en una ca-

baña, a mitad de no sé dónde, esperando la

vida o la muerte, a Greg o a Marcus.
