Chapter 1

I glanced down at my watch. It was half past nine. For some odd reason, a queasy feeling had settled in my stomach. I though, continued to wait patiently inside the elevator, trying my best to ignore it.

Just then, the whole elevator jolted abruptly to a halt. "Oh god!" I doubled forward and caught myself before I could fall; my heels scraping against the floor. Suddenly, without warning, the lights flickered out. Leaving me alone in total darkness. My heart began to pound with fright and the blood roared in my ears.

Startled, I picked myself up. Running my hands against the cold metal wall. I glanced around, even though it was of no use to see. "What's going on?" I felt blind and helpless. The stillness was nauseating, and the blackness was thick and suffocating. I knew I had to get out of here.

Slowly, I felt my way around to the elevator door. I reached out to touch it when suddenly I felt something brush against my hand. I jumped back with fright. Surely I had been in the elevator alone all this time?

"Hello?"

I called out fearfully through the blackness. There was no reply. I sighed. Silly me. I knew I was alone. I had to be.

Summing up some courage, I resumed my attempt to reach the door. As I did so, I couldn't help but feel panic rise up inside me. Someone or something was in here with me. And I could feel it right behind me! But I dare not look.

Just then, I remembered this morning. The hairs on the back of my neck began to stand up.

Earlier throughout the day, a peculiar looking man had been following me to work. Everywhere I went I saw him. When I turned a corner he was there, when I parked my car he was there. Just simply standing there. I had paid no attention to him at first, but later he had started to worry me.

Just then a voice called out from the darkness. My heart froze in my chest. It was a man's voice! And he was calling my name!

I quickly slid back against the paneling. The fear was overpowering.

"What do you want with me?!!"

Tears welled up in my frightened eyes.

"Don't you remember?" The voice replied. "Amistad. Amistad."

"Amistad?!" I cried.

Just then it hit me.

Amistad Street. 9pm. Last night. I hit a man with my car.
