CASS

“It can’t go on this way, Cass,” my partner, Adam Jensen said.

We were both lawyers and started a law firm a few years ago.

While his career was flourishing, mine hadn’t gone so well.

According to Adam it was because I couldn’t keep my personal feelings out of court.

Of course I didn’t see it that way.

I knew I was a good lawyer, and that I worked hard.

It wasn’t my fault no one else saw things my way.

If only they could. It would help in the case I’m working on right now.

“All I’m asking you is to stop letting your feelings influence what you do in a case,” he said.

“You know how I think, Adam,” I said. “Things are black and white to me. There is no grey.”

“We’re dealing with people,” he said. “Not robots. There is always a grey area.”

I shook my head.

“Not to me,” I said. “You’re either guilty or you’re not. Laws are there for a reason.”

“If you’re going to have that kind of attitude I’m going to be forced to take you off this case,” he said.

“You can’t do that!” I said frowning.

“It’s not what I want to do,” he said. “But you’re giving me no choice.”

He leaned in and sighed.

“This is a big case for us, Cass. This can make or break us.”

“So, what?” I said crossing my arms. “Am I just going to be stuck on small cases now?”

“For the time being at least,” he said.

“Unbelievable!” I said and slapped the table with my hand.

“I know things haven’t been easy for you in your personal life...”

“This has nothing to do with my personal life!”

“But you can’t let it affect your job, Cass. People are counting on us. This isn’t a game, it’s people’s lives on the stake.”

“I know how to do my job, Adam!” I said.

“Maybe you should take off for a while,” he said. “Just get your head cleared.”

“I don’t need to take off!” I said. “Just let me finish this case. I know what I’m doing. I’ve got this one in the bag. All I have to...”

“No way,” he said. “I’m sorry. But you’re off the case.”

I stared at him shocked.

I balled my fists, stood up and gathered my files and left the room.

“Fool!” I said under my breath as I stalked down the hall towards my office.

How could he do that?

Just take me off the case! I’d been working my ass off for this firm and on that bloody case.

I had it in the bag.

I know I did!

This was such a mess. And no matter how I begged I knew he wouldn’t give it to me again.

It was humiliating. Being told I wasn’t fit to do my own job.

And my personal life had nothing to do with it!

I mean, he was right.

My personal life wasn’t the best.

I was still nursing the heartache of my engagement ending and my now ex-fiancé, Chandler Price, getting married in a couple of days to another man.

Yes, sometimes I self-medicated.

Sometimes I was too tired to focus because I’d been crying the whole night and struggling with insomnia.

But I knew how to do my job.

I was a good lawyer.

It didn’t matter if Adam saw that or not.

He might not agree with my principals but I knew I was right.

People who do bad things go to jail.

People who do good things are set free.

I refuse to defend someone who’s a criminal. Which is why I changed my strategy in court.

My client was a guilty woman.

I wasn’t going to pretend as if she wasn’t.

If she didn’t want me on her case, then fine.

But as long as I was a lawyer I was going to stand by what was right and wrong.

JEFFREY

If you told me I’d be chased by the police through the crowds in the busy city center, I probably would have thought you were missing a few screws.

But here I was being chased out of the building I used to call my job and running and dodging in a sea of people.

Luckily for me I managed to disappear through the crowds and the cops couldn’t get me.

Then suddenly one cop saw me and chased me all the way through a bunch of ally ways.

I almost got hit by a car which pulled out of a parking lot.

But I managed to swerve out and run away from the cop.

I was thanking my lucky stars while leaning against the wall of an alley way still watching the cops run passed…

“Suckers,” I said.

…when suddenly I heard a sound of something clamping shut.

“Suckers, huh?”

I looked down at my wrist now cuffed with one handcuff.

And then towards the cop smirking at me and a feeling of dread formed in my mind.

“Gotcha now,” he said while cuffing my other hand.

The cop called over the radio,

“Dispatch, this is Unit 5-Alpha. We’ve got the suspect in custody.”

CASS

I’d been assigned my new case and to say I wasn’t happy was an understatement.

The guy I was to defend was an absolute menace to society.

He used to work for a company in a laboratory when he released all the animals in the building and tried to get them transported in a truck during night-time.

He worked as the security guard so his plan would’ve worked perfectly if it wasn’t for him accidentally being caught on one camera that he didn’t disconnect.

The owner of the building realized what was going on and contacted the police.

He was soon caught by them and taken into custody.

So basically I had to defend a criminal that should be in jail.

Who knows what he was planning on doing with those animals.

For all we know he was planning on doing experiments or trying to sell them on the black market.

Whatever was his plan, I didn’t have a good feeling about this man.

And when I sat in front of him at the jail, that feeling became even stronger.

I looked the guy up and down.

He didn’t look like the type to do a crime like this. In fact, he looked like he was a decent guy.

He was quite handsome.

His hair fell around his face in beautiful curls. He had a five o’ clock shadow and these piercing blue-green eyes.

I had to admit I was staring a bit.

And that was partly part of the reason I felt uncomfortable around him.

So, yeah, I guess I found him attractive.

But that didn’t matter!

He was the scum of the earth and I would treat him as such.

I wasn’t that friendly with him.

In fact, we didn’t get along at all from the beginning.

I told him in as much detail as possible that what he did was wrong. And that I wasn’t pleased with defending a criminal like him who abuses animals.

He didn’t take that lightly and started defending himself.

“I was trying to help those animals, not kill them!” he said.

“Sure,” I said. “If that makes you feel better. I’ll be back for another meeting with you. Try not to get in trouble while you’re here.”

With that I got up and walked out of the jail cell.

The last thing he said to me was,

“You’re gonna help me, aren’t you?”

“I’ll try my best,” I said giving him a cold look.

“Please,” he said. “You’re my last hope.”

“We’ll talk soon,” I said and walked down the hallway with the police.

I knew I had to do my job. But I wasn’t looking forward to it.

I’d defend him as much as I could.

But if he was found guilty, I wasn’t planning on fighting for him.

JEFFREY

I could see it in his eyes.

He thought I was scum.

Just the way he looked at me.

But I know I did the right thing. I was trying to help those animals not kill them.

This was really a problem.

If he wasn’t going to defend me right, I might lose in court.

And who knows what will happen to me then.

I can’t go to jail.

I don’t belong in jail.

They’d eat me up for breakfast in there.

I’ll need to convince him of my innocence. Maybe next time I can talk to him about what happened. Tell him everything from my side.

But it didn’t seem like he wanted to talk to me much.

I kind of felt angry at first.

He literally just came in and immediately treated me like dirt.

He seemed like the rich type.

I didn’t grow up rich, heck, guys like him would never even give me a second glance if they’d walk passed me.

I have to admit, though.

He was an attractive guy.

And he looked great in a suit.

But that look in his eyes.

I’ll never forget it.

Still I was really curious about him.

I wonder what made him the way he is.

Why did he come off so cold and distant.

But it didn’t matter right now.

All that mattered was getting out of here.

And I’d have to do it, with or without his help.

CASS

After that first meeting I had quite a few meetings with Jeffrey about his case.

Still he didn’t give me the vibe of an evil criminal.

I just couldn’t figure out this guy.

And then today the first hearing of the case happened.

It was a rough one.

And he was sentenced to house arrest for the time being.

And that should’ve been it.

I would see him again for the next appearance in court and then finally the case would be over and I could move on with my life and forget he existed.

But no.

No, things didn’t go that way.

Because something came up.

Apparently Mr. Animal guy currently lived in a shelter and didn’t have a house to live in.

I asked about his sister but the court said he couldn’t be moved to another state while the case was going on.

Which I found ridiculous of course.

“What are we supposed to do then?” I said.

“Find him another place,” the judge said.

“Where are we going to find another place?” I said. “With all due respect your honour there’s no place else he could stay. “

“If you can’t find a place for him to stay he’ll have to be kept in jail instead.”

“But your honour...”

“That’s my final decision!”

JEFFREY

The judge sentenced me to house arrest for the time being.

And I was relieved at first that I didn’t have to stay in jail for the time being.

Until I realized I didn’t have a place to stay.

I was staying at the shelter down town. There was no way the court would agree to me serving my sentence there.

I do have a sister, though. I’d told Cass about her a little so he knew about her too.

But when Cass had a meeting with me again in my jail cell, he didn’t look very happy at all.

He told me the court decided not to have me moved to my sister’s.

“Then where do they want me to go?” I asked confused.

“At mine,” my lawyer said.

“What?” I said surprised. “What do you mean at yours?”

“At my apartment. What else?” he said. “Look I’m gonna be honest with you. I’m not very pleased with you staying in my personal space.”

He shot daggers at me with his eyes.

“But we don’t have a choice here. It’s either this or you stay in jail.”

He took a step closer.

“So first off don’t think of getting comfortable. It’s still my apartment not yours. You will follow my rules or you’ll just have to serve your sentence in jail instead. Is that clear?”

Shocked by everything he said all I could do was nod my head.

“Good,” he said. “You’ll be moved tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” I said but he didn’t stay to listen.

I stared at the closed door after he slammed it shut.

Does this mean...

He offered to let me stay with him so I didn’t stay in jail.

JEFFREY

I arrived at Cass’ house with my possessions in a sports bag, feeling nervous about staying with my lawyer.

Cass greeted me at the door with a quick nod and showed me to my guest bedroom.

The room was clean and spacious, but it lacked any personal touches that might have made me feel more at home.

Over dinner, I tried to make small talk with Cass, but Cass was distant and uninterested. I felt awkward and out of place, like I was imposing on Cass’ hospitality.

I tried to keep the conversation going, but Cass cut me off and said he was tired, then retreated to his bedroom.

I stood in the hallway, feeling disappointed. I’d hoped to establish a rapport with Cass, but it seemed like he didn’t like me.

I wondered if I had done something wrong, or if Cass was just naturally unfriendly.

Either way, I knew I had to find a way to make the best of the situation.

CASS

The next day I went to pick up my best friend’s dogs. I would be pet-sitting the two dogs for him while he was on holiday.

The dogs, a golden retriever and a poodle, were full of energy and excitement as they sniffed around the house.

Immediately from the start the two dogs couldn’t get enough of Jeffrey. He seemed to have a knack with animals.

I was hesitant at first to have them around him out of fear that he would hurt them (I mean he did try to kidnap animals), but to my surprise he was so gentle with them.

They licked his face and jumped up against him and he bent down to the ground and rubbed them and talked to them as if they were his children.

I had to admit it warmed my heart seeing this.

But I pushed it away again not wanting to let my guard down around him just yet.

We settled into our pet-sitting duties, but I had to admit I couldn’t help but notice how attractive Jeff was.

We worked well together also, taking turns feeding and playing with them in the backyard.

As the day went on, I found myself relaxing around him more.

I felt bad for how I treated him the day before. He wasn’t such a bad guy at all.

It still made it even stranger to me that he tried to steal those animals.

Why would a guy like him do something like that?

We found ourself talking more and more. He made me laugh although I tried not to show it much and he was easy to talk to.

We discovered we had a lot in common and enjoyed each other’s company. I even found myself sharing personal stories with Jeff that I hadn’t told anyone else.

As the sun began to set, we sat on the sofa with the dogs curled up at our feet.

I felt a sense of contentment and happiness that I hadn’t felt in a long time.

I glanced over at Jeff and caught his eye, and we both smiled.

“It’s been a great day, thanks for helping out with the dogs,” I said, breaking the silence.

“No problem, it’s been a lot of fun,” Jeff replied, his eyes flickering with warmth.

As the night wore on, we continued to talk and enjoy each other’s company. I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something special between us, and I found myself wondering if Jeff felt the same way.

CASS

I was busy sleeping when I heard a voice calling me. I groaned and turned around trying to ignore them.

“Go away, mom,” I said.

But then I suddenly recalled I wasn’t at my parents’ place.

And the voice was a male voice.

Which meant only one thing.

I jerked up and sat up right in bed screaming.

Jeff screamed too startled by my sudden actions.

“What the fuck are you doing in my room!” I yelled at him frowning.

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I just thought I’d bring you some breakfast,” he said with wide-eyes.

I looked down at his hands.

He was holding one of my trays and it definitely contained breakfast.

And damn, did it look good.

Who knew this man could cook?

“You can’t just make me breakfast!” I yelled although I was feeling myself cool down more.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I just thought it would be a good gesture for you helping me out with the case.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“Is that all?” I asked.

“Yes, I swear!”

“Okay,” I said. “Well... thanks... I guess.”

Jeff placed the tray on my lap and left quickly.

I looked in the direction of the door.

What a strange guy.

Why did he make me breakfast?

Why was he cooking in my kitchen in the first place?

I sighed and picked up the fork and grumbled,

“He better not have poisoned me.”

CASS

I had a horrible day in court today and to make it worse I had an even longer day working on files in front of my computer in my office afterwards.

When I finally arrived at home I was drained and my back hurt from sitting hunched over the whole time.

And then when I got home I was met with a cheerful Jeffrey.

Great, I thought.

But then after dinner where he kept talking and I didn’t say a word, he asked me if I was alright.

“I’m fine,” I huffed.

“Are you sure? It looks like you have a problem with your back.”

“It’s nothing,” I said. “It just hurts a little.”

“Wait, let me have a look,” he said and stood up from the table and moved around the table.

I didn’t know what he was going to do but as soon as he stood behind my chair and started touching my shoulders, I jerked away,

“Hey! What the hell are you doing!”

“Relax,” he said. “I’m just massaging you.”

“Well can you stop!” I said with a scowl on my face.

“Stop being such a baby. I’m touching you not kissing you.”

For some reason that made me blush instantly.

And after that I shut up.

And I couldn’t help but close my eyes.

Damn.

He was really good with his hands.

When he’d finally stopped I didn’t know what to say.

“Thanks,” I said softly.

“You’re welcome,” he said.

After that he helped me clean the dishes.

“Just let me know if you need another massage,” he said with a smile before heading upstairs to his room.

I couldn’t help but almost smile.

Almost.

CASS

I was lounging on the couch one evening after dinner with the two dogs lying in front of the fireplace, when Jeffrey entered the living room.

He sat down on the opposite couch.

I could sense he was staring at me.

“What?”I asked annoyed without looking up from my book.

“Nothing!”he said. “I was just wondering... what book are you reading?”

I looked up from the book.

“Why do you want to know?” I asked.

“I’m just curious,” he said. “I love reading too.”

I sighed and put the book down.

“It’s called The Blood Moon. It’s about a crime case. A young woman is killed and there are no records of her to be found so they can’t trace her identity. The only clue is the blood moon tattoo on her shoulder.”

“Wow,” he said. “That’s so cool! And do they find out who did it?”

“Well, I’m still reading so I’m yet to find out,” I said.

“Sounds like a good book.”

There was silence for a while. I tried to continue reading but I couldn’t help stealing glances at Jeffrey.

Then I sighed again and put the book down.

“Do you... do you want me to read it for you?” I asked.

“Really?” he said. “You’d do that?”

“That’s why I’m asking,” I said annoyed. “Now answer before I change my mind.”

He laughed.

How did he always get me to become flustered just by hearing his laugh?

“I’d love that,” he said. “Thank you.”

And that’s how we ended up spending the whole night in the living room in front of the fireplace with the dogs sleeping as I read the book out loud.

Jeffrey was even more excited and pulled into the book than I was.

But after some time, I guess overcome by tiredness, I realized Jeffrey wasn’t listening anymore.

He was fast asleep.

I rolled my eyes but had a smile on my face.

Dork.

I quietly stood up and covered him with a blanket.

Then I put out the fire and went upstairs to go sleep.

But not before thinking about Jeffrey.

He was such a weird person.

He acted so innocent.

It truly was getting harder every single day to think of him as a bad person.

CASS

I was busy making dinner when Jeffrey suddenly came into the kitchen.

I glanced over at him when I noticed him holding something in his hand.

“Where did you get that?” I snapped rushing over to him.

I grabbed the box from him.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I just found it in your bookcase. I was wondering...”

“Well, don’t snoop around in my things!” I said. “It’s mine.”

“I’m sorry,” he said and when I saw the look in his eyes I instantly felt bad for snapping at him.

“It’s... alright,” I said. “it’s just Jenga. It’s from when I was a kid.”

“I’ve never played it before,” Jeffrey said.

I raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve never played Jenga?” I said. “Really?”

“Yeah,” he said and I felt myself melt again at that same innocent look in his eyes. “Is it fun?”

I sighed but I had a smile on my face.

“We can play it if you’d like.”

“Really?” he said with wide-eyes.

“Yeah, sure.”

“Wow, thanks,” he said.

So after dinner Jeffrey and I sat down at the coffee table in the living room and played Jenga.

I thought I would hate it but I was actually having fun.

When Jeffrey pulled one of the blocks and the whole tower came tumbling in I laughed out loud.

He laughed too and our eyes met.

And for a moment it was like time stood still.

We smiled at each other and I said,

“Want to go for another round?”

“I’d love to,” he said.

“Alright,” I said and took a few blocks. “Then let’s rebuild.”

I noticed he was watching me.

I looked up at him.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing,” he said. “I just like it when you smile.”

I was surprised but then I smiled again and kept building,

“Well, if you don’t get me mad I’ll smile more.”

He laughed.

“I’ll try.”

He helped me rebuild and this time I was watching him.

He really was something.

CASS

Jeffrey had been staying with me for a while. He didn’t work on my nerves anymore and I realized I’d judged him too quickly. I was starting to get used to having him around.

One Saturday I was planning on watching the game and I asked Jeffrey if he’d like to join me.

I made some popcorn and Jeffrey grabbed two beers for us from the fridge and we sat down and started watching.

My favourite team was playing and I was a very competitive person, probably another reason I was a lawyer, and really wanted them to win and get to the finals.

So I was concentrating quite a lot.

But one thing about me when I watched sport was I never cheered. I always watched it in silence just concentrating on what was happening.

But Jeffrey wasn’t like me.

Instead he cheered loudly and I couldn’t help it but be amused at his antics. He was like a grown child sometimes.

And to my surprise I found myself cheering too and eventually we were cheering along and discussing the game and the strategy of the players.

And then in the final moments we both sat in silence waiting in anticipation and then my team won and Jeffrey and I cheered.

He hugged me and at first I stiffened in his arms at first then hugged him back.

“That was an awesome game!” he said apparently not realizing the butterflies he’d given me with just one touch.

“Yeah, it was,” I said with a smile.

“When I was younger I always wanted to be a football player.”

“Really?” I asked. “What stopped you?”

“I got an injury and had to stop playing.”

“Wow,” I said. “I’m sorry.”

“Hey, it’s okay,” he said. “It was just a pipe dream anyway.”

“Maybe not,” I said. “You could’ve made it.”

He looked surprise.

“You thinks so?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Why not?”

He smiled.

“Thanks.”

For a moment I got lost in his eyes and I felt my heart beat faster.

Then I looked away and said,

“Want another beer.”

“Yeah,” he said sounding breathless. “I’d love one.”

JEFFREY

Cass’ cozy living room was slightly dark, and a soft glow came from the tv screen as Cass and I settled on the couch with a large bowl of popcorn between us. It had been a long day of going through legal documents and discussing the case, and we both needed a break.

I flipped through the movie options on the streaming platform, finally settling on a classic romance film.

“How about this one? It’s supposed to be really good!” I suggested, looking over at Cass with hopeful eyes.

Cass glanced at the movie title, and his expression turned skeptical.

“A romance movie? Seriously?” he replied, trying to hide the amusement in his voice. “Isn’t there something more action-packed or thrilling we could watch instead?”

I pouted playfully, giving Cass irresistible puppy dog eyes that he couldn’t resist.

“Please? Just this once,” I said, a hint of a smile forming on my lips.

Cass pretended to contemplate for a moment, but deep down, I knew, he couldn’t say no to my request.

With a sigh, he gave in.

“Alright, fine. But only because you’re under house arrest and stuck here. I hope you appreciate this,” Cass said, trying to sound serious but failing to hide a small smile of his own.

As the movie began, I scooted closer to Cass, making sure our arms touched. Cass seemed a bit taken aback by the sudden proximity, but he didn’t move away. We both settled into the storyline.

Minutes turned into hours, and the movie’s emotional moments tugged at my heartstrings. As the two main characters shared a passionate kiss on screen, I couldn’t help but glance at Cass to see his reaction. To my surprise, Cass was fully invested in the movie, and I could swear I saw a hint of tears glistening in his eyes.

“Aaw,” I said. “Are you getting sad?”

“What? No!” Cass said and sniffled. “I just... I have allergies. It’s been acting up a little.”

“Oh,” I said with a smile. “Okay.”

I felt a rush of fondness for Cass as I realized that there was more to this seemingly aloof lawyer than met the eye. I had seen glimpses of cass’s vulnerability during our time together, but this shared movie experience made me feel even closer to him.

When our eyes met, there was a moment of silence between us. It was as if the room had faded away, leaving only the connection between the two of us. My heart raced, and I leaned in slightly, almost daring to close the distance between our lips.

But before anything more could happen, cass cleared his throat and pulled back, pretending to be nonchalant.

“I...uh, I think I need more popcorn,” he stammered, getting up from the couch a little too quickly.

My cheeks flushed with embarrassment, realizing that I might have misread the situation. I tried to cover up my disappointment with a smile.

“Sure, I’ll join you. The movie’s not over yet.”

In the kitchen, while preparing more popcorn, our eyes met again, and cass finally let a small smile slip.

“You know, I might’ve been too quick to judge the movie choice. It’s not that bad after all,” he admitted, trying to hide the warmth in his voice.

I grinned, happy to see a softer side of cass.

“Told you! Romance movies aren’t so bad,” I teased.

As we returned to the couch, our shoulders touched once again, and this time, neither of us pulled away. The movie continued, but I found myself more captivated by the man sitting next to me than the story on the screen.

JEFFREY

The evening sun had set, leaving the living room bathed in a soft glow from the lamp on the side table. Cass sat on the couch, his brow furrowed.

Sitting across from Cass, I could sense his unease and felt a pang of guilt for suggesting we play a video game together.

“You know what, Cass? It’s fine. I didn’t mean to bother you. I can find something else to do,” I said gently, trying not to sound disappointed.

Cass looked up, seeing the genuine concern in my eyes.

“No, it’s not that, Jeffrey. I’m just not in the mood for anything right now,” he replied, his tone softening.

Without another word, I nodded and excused myself, heading into my temporary bedroom in Cass’s apartment.

A while later, I was sitting on the bed, engrossed in something on my phone, when Cass suddenly peeked into the room.

Cass cleared his throat gently, and I looked up, surprised to see Cass there.

“Oh, hey. I thought you wanted some alone time,” I said, setting my phone aside.

Cass hesitated for a moment, then spoke softly, “Actually, I changed my mind. If you’re still up for it, we could play that video game.”

A smile spread across my face, delighted that Cass had reconsidered.

“Sure, I’d love to! Let’s do it,” I replied enthusiastically.

We returned to the living room, and Cass set up the video game console while I grabbed a couple of controllers. We settled on the couch, side by side, and began playing the game. My laughter soon filled the room, and I could sense Cass gradually letting go of the day’s tensions.

As the game progressed, Cass and I got more competitive, trying to outdo each other. In the heat of the moment, we both reached for the same controller, and our hands collided. I quickly pulled back, ready to apologize for the accidental intrusion.

However, before any words could escape my lips, Cass’s hand reached up, gently cupping my face, and he leaned in, pressing his lips against mine in a tender, unexpected kiss. Shocked at first, my eyes widened, but the surprise soon gave way to the warmth of the moment, and I returned the kiss.

When we finally pulled away, neither of us spoke of what had just happened. Instead, Cass cleared his throat and said with a hint of playfulness,

“The game’s not over yet. We still have a score to settle.”

I chuckled, my heart pounding with excitement and happiness.

“You’re on!” I replied, giving Cass a sly grin.

We resumed playing the video game, our fingers occasionally brushing against each other, but we didn’t mention the kiss again. It was as if we had both silently agreed to savor the moment, to let it linger as something unspoken between us.

As the night wore on, the tension between us had shifted, and a newfound sense of joy and connection filled the room. Despite the uncertain times ahead, we found solace in each other’s company, and the video game turned out to be the perfect escape from reality.

Deep down, I couldn’t help but feel happy inside, knowing that this night had changed something between us, something I hoped would lead to even more special moments in the future.

JEFFREY

The first rays of the morning sun were just beginning to paint the sky with hues of pink and orange as Cass gently nudged me awake. Still half-asleep, I blinked, trying to make sense of why Cass was waking me up so early, especially on a Saturday when he had the day off.

“What’s going on, Cass?” I mumbled, rubbing my eyes and trying to shake off the grogginess.

Cass handed me a warm cup of coffee, and a smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

“I thought we could watch the sunrise together. It’s been a while since I did that,” he said, his eyes briefly glancing at the horizon.

My eyes widened with surprise, the fog of sleep dissipating as excitement started to replace it. “Really? That sounds amazing,” I replied, my voice still tinged with sleepiness.

We both made our way outside to the small balcony of Cass’s apartment. Cass spread out a blanket, and I wrapped it around myself, shivering slightly in the early morning chill.

“Wait, where’s your blanket?” I asked, looking at Cass with concern.

Cass chuckled softly.

“I thought we could share this one,” he said sheepishly, giving me a shy grin.

I laughed, realizing my assumption and apologized.

“Oh! Sorry,” I said, covering both of us with the blanket as we settled side by side, our legs touching.

As the sun continued to rise, we sat in comfortable silence, taking in the beauty of the moment. I took a sip of my coffee, and a contented smile spread across my face.

“You remembered how I like my coffee,” I remarked, touched by the gesture.

Cass glanced at me, the corners of his lips turning up in a soft smile.

“Of course I did. I pay attention,” he replied, his gaze warm and affectionate.

As the colors in the sky intensified, I felt a rush of emotion. I couldn’t help but reach out, placing my hand on top of Cass’s. Cass looked surprised for a moment, as if he hadn’t expected this level of affection after the kiss we had shared the day before.

But instead of pulling away, Cass interlaced his fingers with mine, holding my hand gently. The connection felt natural, as if our hands were meant to fit together.

Together, we watched the sunrise, our eyes occasionally meeting, and a wordless understanding passing between us. The tension from the unexpected kiss seemed to melt away as we embraced the shared moment, a newfound sense of closeness enveloping us.

The morning sun bathed us in a warm glow, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this unanticipated turn of events. Who could’ve thought that being unfairly accused would lead me to share such an intimate and meaningful moment with my lawyer.

But I knew in that moment, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

JEFFREY

The Saturday sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over Cass’s apartment as Cass and I tackled the task of cleaning. Music filled the air, creating a lively atmosphere that made the chore seem almost enjoyable.

As we moved about the room, dusting shelves and organizing books, a familiar song came on that we both loved. Without missing a beat, we began to sing along, our voices harmonizing in a surprisingly perfect blend.

I couldn’t help but notice how Cass’s face lit up as we sang together, and a mischievous idea crossed my mind. I set the cleaning supplies aside and extended my hand to Cass, a playful glint in my eyes.

“Come on, Cass. Let’s dance!” I said, my voice full of enthusiasm.

Cass chuckled and shook his head, feigning reluctance.

“Oh no, I don’t dance. I’m not very good at it,” he replied, trying to suppress the smile that threatened to break free.

My eyes sparkled, and I persisted,

“Nonsense! I’ve seen you move to the music. You’ve got rhythm! Come on, just one dance?”

With a sigh, Cass finally gave in, unable to resist my infectious energy. He took my hand, and we began swaying to the music in the middle of the living room. At first, we maintained a safe distance, but as the song’s tempo increased, I pulled Cass in closer, my hand resting on Cass’s waist.

Cass was hesitant at first, his arms hovering awkwardly in the air, but my guidance and our shared laughter soon eased his self-consciousness. We moved together in harmony, our steps becoming more fluid and synchronized.

With a playful grin, I twirled Cass around, and he couldn’t help but let out a genuine laugh. The room felt alive with our shared joy, and we seemed to forget everything else in that moment.

As we continued dancing, our bodies pressed close together, our chemistry undeniable. My heart raced as I looked into Cass’s eyes, and I couldn’t resist leaning in to kiss him, not wanting to let this moment slip away.

Cass’s surprise quickly turned into reciprocation, and our lips met in a soft, tender kiss, our movements never missing a beat.

When we finally pulled away, we both blushed, but the smile that lingered on our lips spoke volumes.

CASS

The soft morning light filtered through the curtains as I tiptoed around the kitchen, determined to make Jeffrey’s birthday a special one. I had woken up early to prepare a surprise for my client turned lover, who was still peacefully asleep in the next room.

With a cookbook propped open on the kitchen counter, I carefully measured the ingredients for the cake. I was no expert baker, but I was determined to make this birthday treat for Jeffrey with all the love and care I could muster.

As the cake began to take shape in the oven, the sweet aroma filled the air, adding to the anticipation of the surprise. I couldn’t help but feel nervous, hoping that my baking skills wouldn’t disappoint Jeffrey.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the cake was done. I carefully took it out of the oven, the golden edges and mouth-watering scent confirming that it was indeed a success. I set it on the counter to cool, trying to keep my excitement in check.

Moments later, the bedroom door creaked open, and a sleepy-eyed Jeffrey stepped into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes with a yawn. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of him, looking adorable and disheveled in his morning state.

“Good morning, birthday boy,” I greeted, trying to sound casual, though my heart was racing with excitement.

Jeffrey blinked in surprise, not expecting to be greeted so warmly.

“Morning, Cass. What’s all this?” he asked, looking around the kitchen, noticing the cookbook and the cake on the counter.

I walked over to him, taking Jeffrey’s hand in mine.

“I wanted to make you something special for your birthday,” I said, a touch of nervousness in my voice.

Jeffrey’s eyes softened, touched by the gesture.

“You made this?” he asked, gesturing towards the cake.

I nodded, feeling a little shy.

“Yeah, I did. I hope you like it,” I replied.

Jeffrey leaned in and kissed me, a sweet and tender expression of gratitude.

“I love it already,” he said, his voice full of warmth.

We sat down at the kitchen table together, and I brought out the cake, adorned with a few candles.

“Make a wish,” I encouraged, my heart pounding in my chest.

Jeffrey closed his eyes for a moment, then blew out the candles with a smile.

“Thank you, Cass. This means a lot to me,” he said, his eyes locking with mine.

I couldn’t help but smile back, relieved that my efforts had been appreciated.

“You deserve to have a special birthday, Jeffrey,” I replied, my voice sincere.

With each bite, we savored not just the cake’s delicious taste but the growing connection between us.

We might have been brought together in horrible circumstances, but I still couldn’t help but hope that maybe I could hold onto Jeffrey just a little longer. I knew it was wishful thinking to think I could hold on to him forever. But maybe this moment together could be enough.

CASS

The night sky stretched above Jeffrey and I as we lay side by side on the roof, stargazing after a pleasant dinner. The stars seemed to twinkle with a knowing glimmer as the two of us began sharing our pasts, opening up in ways we hadn’t before.

“Why did you want to become a lawyer?” Jeffrey asked.

I took a deep breath, finding the courage to share a painful chapter of my life with Jeffrey.

“My mom... She was taken from me, brutally killed by a murderer. The worst part was that this man walked free, evading justice. They argued his past childhood abuse caused his actions, despite all the evidence against him. It was a nightmare. That day, I promised myself I’d never let someone like that walk away free again.”

Jeffrey listened intently. He reached out and gently took my hand, offering silent support and understanding.

With a shaky breath, Jeffrey began to share his own painful memory.

“When I was younger, my brother was mentally disabled, and he was always bullied by his own so-called friends. I... I didn’t stand up for him because I didn’t want to seem uncool in front of them. I regretted it so much. A few months later, he passed away from heart failure, and I never got the chance to make up with him, to tell him how sorry I was for not standing up for him when he needed me the most.”

Tears welled up in Jeffrey’s eyes, and I pulled him close, holding him gently.

“I’m so sorry, Jeffrey. You were just a kid. You couldn’t have known what would happen. It’s not your fault,” I whispered, my voice filled with compassion.

We comforted each other, our pasts intertwining in our vulnerability and shared pain. In that moment, we both realized that our connection was more profound than we had ever imagined.

As we discussed our feelings for each other, I couldn’t hold back any longer. I took a deep breath, looking into Jeffrey’s eyes, and said,

“I have to be honest with you. I’ve... fallen in love with you, Jeffrey. You’ve touched my heart in ways I never thought possible.”

Jeffrey’s eyes widened, and a soft smile spread across his face.

“I’ve fallen in love with you too, Cass. You’ve shown me so much kindness and understanding. You make me feel safe, like I can be myself around you.”

Our faces drew closer, and we shared a tender, heartfelt kiss. It was a moment filled with a whirlwind of emotions, the culmination of our growing affection for each other.

As we held each other close, our hearts pounding with desire and longing, we knew that this was the moment we had both been waiting for. We allowed our love to take over, embracing the passion that had been building between us.

Going inside my apartment again into my bedroom, our kisses deepened, and our hands explored each other’s bodies with a newfound intensity. It was as if all the pain of our pasts and the uncertainty of our current situations had faded away, leaving only the pure connection we shared.

We made love under the starlit sky, our bodies entwined in a dance of love and vulnerability. It was more than just a physical act; it was a declaration of our love and the beginning of a journey we would embark on together.

As we lay together, our bodies wrapped in each other’s warmth, we knew that we had found something special in each other.

And although I was terrified because I didn’t know what the future held or if there even was a future, I pushed it away and told myself I’d worry about it tomorrow.

But right now all that mattered was having Jeffrey lie down on my chest as I stroked his hair and held him close.

JEFFREY

And then the day of the sentencing came and Cass and I were both nervous for the results.

But to my surprise, we actually won!

The courtroom victory had been a surreal moment for me. I was finally free from the cloud of injustice that had been hanging over me, and I couldn’t wait to celebrate with Cass, the one person who had stood by me through it all. I felt a renewed sense of hope for our relationship, believing that we could now fully embrace what we had.

However, when the court proceedings were over, and we stepped out of the courtroom, I noticed a shift in Cass’s demeanor. He was distant and cold, and it worried me. Had I done something wrong? Had Cass changed his mind about us?

As we walked out of the courthouse, I mustered the courage to ask,

“Cass, are you okay? You seem distant.”

Cass sighed, looking conflicted.

“Jeffrey, we need to talk,” he said, his tone serious.

We found a quiet spot nearby and sat down. my heart raced, fearing the worst. I had hoped for a future with Cass, but now it seemed so uncertain.

“I can’t continue our relationship, Jeffrey,” Cass finally said, avoiding eye contact.

My heart sank.

“Why? What’s happened? I thought we were finally in a good place,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

Cass looked pained as he explained,

“I can’t risk jeopardizing my career by being in a relationship with you. The court case was one thing, but continuing this... it’s too much. People won’t understand, and I can’t afford to be associated with someone who committed a crime. It’s wrong, Jeffrey, and there’s no excusing it.”

I felt a mix of hurt and anger. I had hoped that Cass would understand my actions, that I had done what I believed was right to stop the cruelty to innocent animals.

“You don’t understand, Cass. I couldn’t stand by and watch those animals suffer. I had to do something,” I said, my voice trembling with emotion.

Cass shook his head, his resolve firm.

“It doesn’t matter. What you did was illegal, and it reflects poorly on me too. I can’t continue a relationship with someone who thinks they can take the law into their own hands,” he replied.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized that Cass hadn’t truly believed in my cause, even after everything we had been through together.

“I thought you believed in justice, Cass. I thought you believed in me,” I said, my voice breaking.

Cass looked torn, but he remained steadfast in his decision.

“I do believe in justice, Jeffrey, but there are legal ways to pursue it. What you did was reckless and impulsive, and it put both of us in a difficult position,” he said, his words cutting deep.

Feeling hurt and rejected, I stood up, unable to bear the pain any longer.

“Fine, Cass. If that’s how you feel, then I guess there’s nothing left to say,” I said, my voice choked with emotion.

I turned and walked away, not wanting Cass to see the tears streaming down my cheeks. I couldn’t believe that after everything we had been through, Cass couldn’t find it in his heart to stand by me.

As I made my way back to the shelter, I tried to hold back my pain, feeling betrayed by the one person I had trusted the most.

CASS

The days following my decision to break things off with Jeffrey were some of the loneliest and most painful I had ever experienced. I sat in my apartment, feeling the weight of regret and heartache heavy on my chest. It was a decision fueled by fear, a fear of being hurt again, a fear of being rejected, a fear of putting my heart on the line only to have it shattered once more.

But now, sitting in the quiet solitude of my apartment, I realized the magnitude of my mistake. I had pushed away the one person who had made me feel truly understood, truly loved. The times we had spent together had been magical, and I had felt an undeniable connection with Jeffrey. Yet, in a moment of insecurity and self-preservation, I had let it all slip away.

“Why did I do this?” I whispered to myself, feeling the tears welling up in my eyes. I knew I had made a colossal error in judgment, and I couldn’t help but blame myself for ruining what could have been a beautiful relationship.

I replayed the scene in my mind, the hurt and confusion in Jeffrey’s eyes as he left, the regret in my own heart as I realized what I had done. I wanted to apologize, to tell Jeffrey how much he meant to me, but I knew I had lost that chance.

The silence in the apartment only amplified the ache in my heart. I had been through heartbreak before, a painful breakup with my ex-fiancé who had left me feeling shattered and unlovable. I had sworn to myself then that I would never let myself be hurt like that again, but in doing so, I had closed myself off to the possibility of something truly special with Jeffrey.

As the days turned into nights, I found myself unable to sleep, haunted by the memories of our time together. I missed Jeffrey’s laughter, his touch, his understanding, and I realized that I had been a fool to let it all slip through my fingers.

I longed to reach out to Jeffrey, to tell him how sorry I was, how much I wanted to take back my hurtful words. But pride and fear held me back, and I knew that it was too late now. I had driven Jeffrey away, and I doubted that he would ever come back.

The realization that I had lost the chance at love with someone so special left me feeling empty and defeated. I had convinced myself that love was not worth the pain, but now I understood that the pain of losing Jeffrey was far greater than anything I had ever experienced before.

In the depths of my loneliness, I made a silent promise to myself. I would guard my heart fiercely from now on, shielding it from the vulnerability and heartache that came with love. I had loved and lost, and I couldn’t bear to go through it again.

But even as I made this vow, a part of me knew that Jeffrey would forever hold a special place in my heart. I had experienced a connection that was rare and profound, and no matter how much I tried to push it away, I knew that I could never forget the love we had shared.

And so, I resigned myself to a life without love, forever haunted by the memory of what could have been, and the knowledge that I had let the one person who truly understood me slip through my fingers.

JEFFREY

I sat on my makeshift bed in the shelter, my heart heavy with pain and disappointment. The words Cass had spoken to me echoed in my mind, each one cutting deeper than the last. I tried to hold back the tears, but they spilled down my cheeks, a silent testament to the hurt I felt.

I had allowed myself to believe that there was something special between me and Cass, that the connection we shared was real. But now, as I replayed our recent conversation in my mind, doubt crept in. Had Cass ever truly cared for me, or had it all been an illusion?

“I should’ve known better,” I whispered to myself, my voice filled with self-blame. I had always struggled to see my own worth, and now, I felt more worthless than ever.

I remembered the happiness I felt when Cass started treating me better, when it seemed like we were getting closer. I had allowed myself to be vulnerable, to let Cass in, and I had believed that Cass was doing the same.

But now, it all felt like a lie. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had been used, that Cass had seen me as nothing more than a convenient distraction from his own loneliness.

The memory of our night together weighed on me heavily. I felt dirty and cheap, as if I had given myself away to someone who didn’t truly care about me. I had shared my deepest thoughts and feelings with Cass, including the reasons behind my actions at the research company, hoping that Cass would understand.

But Cass couldn’t see past the surface, couldn’t see the pain and desperation that had driven me to take such drastic measures. Instead, he had labeled me a criminal and a monster, unable to grasp the complexity of my actions and the motives behind them.

I had hoped that Cass would be different, that he would see me for who I truly was. But now I realized that Cass was just as judgmental and closed-minded as everyone else I had encountered in my life.

As the tears continued to fall, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of loneliness settle over me once more. I had been so lonely before I met Cass, crying myself to sleep in the shelter, feeling like I was nothing more than a burden to the world.

But when Cass entered my life, everything changed. I felt loved and cared for, and I allowed myself to believe that I was deserving of that love. I had thought that Cass saw something in me that others couldn’t, something worth loving.

Now, all of that was shattered, leaving me feeling even more broken and unlovable than before.

“I don’t need love,” I whispered, trying to convince myself that I could go back to living a life of solitude.

But deep down, I knew that the loneliness would be even more unbearable now that I had experienced what it felt like to be loved, even if it was only for a brief moment.

I wiped away my tears, determined to put on a brave face and move forward. I couldn’t change how Cass felt about me, but I could choose to believe in my own worth, even if no one else did.

And as I sat there, a flicker of hope remained in my heart, a tiny spark of belief that someday, someone would come into my life who would see me for who I truly was, who would love me unconditionally, flaws and all. Until then, I would learn to love myself, even in the face of rejection and heartbreak.

CASS

After a long day at work, I found myself in my office, lost in thought and regret over my recent breakup with Jeffrey. I replayed our conversation over and over again in my mind, wondering if I had made the right decision. My heart ached with the knowledge that I might have let go of something truly special.

Just as I was about to leave for the day, my business partner, Adam, knocked on my office door and entered with a concerned expression. “Hey, Cass. Can we talk for a moment?” Adam asked.

I nodded and gestured for Adam to take a seat.

“Sure, what’s on your mind?” I replied, expecting some judgment or criticism for my recent actions.

“I heard about what happened with Jeffrey,” Adam said, his tone gentle yet firm. “And I have to say, I think you made a mistake.”

I looked up, surprised by Adam’s response. I had expected judgement, not support. “You think I made a mistake?” I asked, my voice tinged with confusion.

Adam leaned forward, his eyes meeting mine. “Look, Cass, I know you’re worried about your career and the potential consequences of being in a relationship with Jeffrey. But you can’t control who you fall in love with. Sometimes, love comes unexpectedly, and it doesn’t always fit into the neat boxes we try to place it in,” he said.

“But I can’t just ignore the risks,” I replied, feeling torn.

Adam shook his head. “Love doesn’t come with guarantees, Cass. It’s like falling off a cliff, and you build your wings on the way down. You have to take a leap of faith and trust that it’ll be worth it, even if it’s uncertain and scary.”

I sighed, feeling the weight of my emotions crashing over me.

“I’m just afraid of getting hurt again. My ex-fiancé... he broke my heart, and I don’t know if I can go through that pain again,” I admitted.

Adam nodded understandingly.

“I get it, Cass. But you can’t let past hurts dictate your future. Jeffrey may be worth the risk. You’ve told me how happy he made you, how he made you feel loved and cared for. Don’t let fear hold you back from something potentially beautiful,” he said.

I took a deep breath, feeling torn between my fears and my feelings for Jeffrey.

“I just don’t know if I can trust my heart. My mind keeps telling me it’s not worth it,” I confessed.

Adam smiled kindly.

“Sometimes, you have to silence the doubts and listen to your heart. It might not be easy, but if you love Jeffrey, then it’s worth fighting for. Love is about taking chances, and if you don’t take that chance, you’ll never know what could have been,” he said.

I looked down, my mind swirling with conflicting thoughts and emotions. I knew that Adam was right, that I needed to trust my heart and take a chance on love. I had let fear cloud my judgement, and I regretted it deeply.

“Thank you, Adam,” I said, my voice sincere. “You’ve given me a lot to think about.”

Adam patted me on the shoulder.

“You’re welcome, Cass. Just remember, love is worth the risk. Don’t let fear hold you back from something that could make you truly happy.”

As Adam left my office, I sat there, contemplating his words. I knew I needed to reach out to Jeffrey, to tell him that I had made a mistake, that I was willing to fight for our relationship. It might not be easy, and there would be challenges ahead, but I couldn’t let fear dictate my life.

JEFFREY

The shelter was quiet as I sat alone in a corner, my heart heavy with sorrow. I had returned to the place I had called home before Cass had come into my life, feeling like I had lost everything. The pain of our breakup was still fresh, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of rejection that lingered within me.

As I stared at the ground, lost in my thoughts, a kind woman who worked at the shelter approached me. Her name was Gloria, and she had always been a source of comfort and support for the residents.

“Jeffrey, are you okay?” Gloria asked, her voice gentle and full of concern.

I forced a weak smile.

“I’m trying to be,” I replied, my voice filled with sadness.

Gloria sat down beside me, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.

“I’m so sorry, Jeffrey,” she said softly.

I nodded, unable to find the right words to express the pain I felt.

“I thought we had something special,” I admitted, my voice trembling.

Gloria nodded understandingly. “I believe you did, Jeffrey. But sometimes, people have their reasons for making certain decisions. Cass may have been afraid to get hurt again,” she explained gently.

Gloria smiled knowingly.

“We all have our stories here, Jeffrey. People share their pain and their joys. I know Cass’s past must have hurt him deeply, and it might have made him cautious about starting a new relationship.”

I sighed, feeling a mix of frustration and understanding.

“I get that, but he could have at least given us a chance. I thought he cared about me,” I said, my voice cracking with emotion.

“I believe he did care about you, Jeffrey,” Gloria reassured me. “But sometimes, fear can cloud our judgment. It’s not an excuse for what happened, but it might explain why he acted the way he did.”

I nodded, processing her words. I could see now that fear had played a significant role in Cass’s decision, but that didn’t make the pain any less real.

“I just wish he had told me how he felt instead of just ending things like that,” I said, my voice filled with hurt.

Gloria nodded in agreement.

“Communication is essential in any relationship. Perhaps he didn’t handle it the best way, but people aren’t perfect, Jeffrey. We all make mistakes.”

I took a deep breath, wiping away a stray tear. “I know. But it’s too late now. I can’t go back to him,” I said, the weight of my decision heavy on my shoulders.

Gloria smiled warmly, offering me a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. “You need to do what’s best for you, Jeffrey. If you feel like you can’t go back, then trust your instincts,” she said.

As the conversation continued, Gloria offered me words of encouragement and wisdom, helping me see the situation from a different perspective. Although the pain of my breakup with Cass wouldn’t vanish immediately, Gloria’s support reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my struggles.

As I watched the shelter residents go about their day, I knew that life would continue, and I would find a way to heal and move forward. Maybe someday, I would find someone who wouldn’t be afraid to take a chance on love with me.

Until then, I knew that I had a support system at the shelter that cared for me, just like Gloria, who had reminded me that love, despite its challenges, was worth the journey.

CASS

The air was filled with tension as I approached the familiar shelter where Jeffrey had sought refuge. My heart was pounding in my chest, uncertainty and hope warring within me. I knew I had to make things right, to follow my heart and fight for the love I had almost lost.

As I entered the shelter, I scanned the room until my eyes met Jeffrey’s. Jeffrey looked up, his expression a mix of surprise and sadness. I could see the pain I had caused reflected in those eyes, and I knew I had a lot to explain.

“Jeffrey, we need to talk,” I said softly, my voice filled with earnestness.

Jeffrey nodded, his gaze never leaving mine. “I know. I’ve been waiting to hear what you have to say,” he replied quietly.

I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts.

“I made a mistake, Jeffrey. I let fear and my past cloud my judgement. But I’ve realized that I can’t let my career hold me back from pursuing happiness with you,” I said, my voice unwavering.

Jeffrey listened intently, hope flickering in his eyes.

“What do you mean?” he asked, his voice cautious.

I looked at Jeffrey with sincerity.

“I resigned from the law firm. I decided it was time to let go of the bitterness and anger that was consuming me. I can’t keep living in the past, letting it dictate my future,” I said.

Jeffrey’s eyes widened in surprise.

“You resigned? But why?” he asked, needing to understand my decision.

“Because I realized that love is worth fighting for, and I want to fight for us,” I replied. “I care about you more than anything, Jeffrey. I love you.”

Tears welled up in Jeffrey’s eyes, and he took a shaky breath.

“I love you too, Cass. I never wanted to leave,” he confessed.

I took a step closer, closing the distance between us.

“Then let’s not leave each other. Let’s build a future together, follow our dreams,” I said, my voice filled with determination.

Jeffrey nodded, his doubts and fears melting away.

“I want that too. I want to be with you,” he said.

With that, I gently cupped Jeffrey’s face in my hands and leaned in, pressing my lips against Jeffrey’s. It was a kiss filled with love, forgiveness, and the promise of a new beginning.

As we pulled back, we gazed into each other’s eyes, the weight of our past mistakes lifting off our shoulders. I knew that it wouldn’t be easy, that we would face challenges and uncertainties, but I was willing to face it all with Jeffrey by my side.

“I promise you, Jeffrey, I’m not going anywhere. I’m here to stay,” I said firmly.

Jeffrey smiled through his tears.

“And I promise I’ll never leave you either,” he replied.

Hand in hand, we walked out of the shelter, ready to embrace our future together. We didn’t know what lay ahead, but we knew we had each other, and that was all we needed.

CASS

The sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the animal rescue center that Jeffrey and I had built together. It had been a few months since we had reunited, and our lives had transformed in ways we could never have imagined.

As we walked hand in hand through the shelter, the sound of contented barks and purrs filled the air. The four dogs and cats we had adopted were now part our family, and the love we received from the animals was a constant reminder of the love we shared with each other.

I stopped in the middle of the shelter, turning to face Jeffrey with a smile that reached my eyes.

“Jeffrey, these past few months have been the happiest of my life,” I said, my voice filled with love.

Jeffrey looked at me with joy in his eyes.

“Mine too, Cass. I never thought I could feel this happy,” he replied, his eyes shining with emotion.

I took a deep breath, my heart pounding with nervous excitement. I dropped down on one knee, pulling out a small box from my pocket.

“Jeffrey, I love you more than words can express. You’ve brought light into my life and made me believe in love again. Will you do me the honor of becoming my husband?” I asked, opening the box to reveal a beautiful ring.

Tears welled up in Jeffrey’s eyes as he looked at me, his heart overflowing with love.

“Yes, Cass! A thousand times yes!” he exclaimed, his voice filled with happiness.

I slipped the ring onto Jeffrey’s finger, and we embraced, sealing our love with a passionate kiss. The animals around us seemed to sense the joy in the air, and they barked and meowed in celebration.

With the decision to spend our lives together, Jeffrey and I knew that we were embarking on a new journey, one filled with love, compassion, and shared dreams. We had found our purpose in each other and in the animals we cared for.

As we walked out of the shelter, hand in hand, we knew. The future was uncertain, but with each other, we could face anything that came our way.

Our journey had been filled with twists and turns, but it had led us to this moment.

To a love that was unconditional and unbreakable.

And if this love was a crime...

...well, I was happy to commit it.
