What is your opinion?

Classic Fantasy

"Edgar Rice Burroughs is one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time. Readers might find the writing style a little dated (eg. ERB occasionally uses overlong sentences) - but, well, it was written a long time ago. His novels also tend to have an episodic format, since many were first released in magazines over months. In Princess of Mars, ERB creates a wonderful fantasy Mars, inhabited by fantastic races and terrible monsters; there are great ruins, incredible cities and the huge expanses of Mars' surface. The recent John Carter movie recreated some of this, but threw away the plot and the actual character of the hero. ERB's John Carter is a more classic hero, with a strong moral code and sense of honour - something often lacking in modern day heroes. The alien people he encounters are richly created too - even the loyal "monster" he adopts as a dog. What I loved about the book was the sense of wonder and excitement its brings. A real pleasure."
