Prologue
My name is Jasper, and I am not important or significant. I'm just the personal guard of Prince Frederick.
One day, Prince Frederick gave me a new job... And if I could go back in time and do it all over again, knowing what I know now, I would beg him to never give me the bloody task.
He was getting married in a month and I was charged with guarding the treasure he would use to pay for his bride. It was more than a kings ransom.
Rumor had it, her father, King William didn't want her to marry Prince Frederick. He wanted to sell her to another prince, who was also willing to pay a high price. But Prince Frederick was in love with Princess Charlotte, and was willing to double the price for his true love.
For weeks I guarded that damn treasure with my life. But the night before the wedding, an assassin broke in with every intention of stealing the treasure I promised to guard with my life.
We fought with our swords, but he bested me. I still don't know how he did it, but one moment I had the upper hand and the next, my sword was across the room.
The assassin smirked down at me with his dagger at my throat. "With your death, King William will break the treaty and have Princess Charlotte marry my brother instead. And my brother , Prince Roger will rule both kingdoms."
With that he slit my throat. My blood splashed on the treasure. The sting was instant and sharp.
The blood filled my lungs, depriving me of oxygen. My vision blurred and started to darken.
My body started to shake and everything went dark for a moment.
But it was only a moment, because a heartbeat later my spirit was dragged from the shell of flesh lying on the chest.
The assassin cackled as he reached down, kicking my body from the chest, and lifted the heavy burden.
To be honest, I was surprised. Such a scrawny man lifting such a heavy load. I expected him to crumple under the weight.
I watched in frustration as he made his slow way into the darkness.
Or I would have had I not suddenly been bound in golden chains that attached to the blasted treasure.
When I promised the Prince I would guard the treasure with my life, I had no idea it meant the after life, too! And as it turned out... My future lives as well...
