Chapter 1

Date: 5-20-2022

I am afraid of the Harvest Moon. This is the time when I expose myself. No one will understand me. Everyone will be afraid of me once they get to know about my identity. Every full moon is scary for me, but during Harvest Moon, I take a long time to transform back. Sometimes I wonder how my adopted parents will react if I expose myself.

Story:

“Hey Asher, did you see the bulletin board?” Lucas says as he puts his hand around my neck.

“Yes, I did.”

“You got 2nd place this time. Next time you can definitely take over him.”

Marcus is the guy who is top of the class. He goes to study all the time. His parents pay for his tuitions and extra classes. Not just that, he always sits in the class and studies. Because of his good grades, he is a little bit arrogant.

“Ahh, it feels good being on top again. I can’t express my feelings,” he says as he walks past Lucas and me.

“See this idiot,” Lucas whispers.

“You know he is always like this,” I reply.

Marcus turns around and says, “Say it louder if you are going to talk behind my back.”

I am not going to argue with him and waste my time, but I have to say something.

“Well, Marcus, if you think good grades will get you into a good college, then you are being delusional. Experience matters too. Oh, you don’t have experience because you are BUSY studying,” I responded. Marcus went out without saying anything.

“Woah bro, you got him good,” Lucas says.

“I just speak facts,” I reply.

Lily comes up to me during lunchtime and sits beside me.

She says, “This chicken is not well-cooked. My mom can cook better than this.”

“Eat it for now. Later I will buy you an ice cream,” I say. She looked at me with big eyes and says, “Then it is a promise.”

Lily and I became friends at the beginning of high school. She came to me for math problems as according to her, I am the math guy everyone is talking about. She was terrible at math at first. So we had a couple of study sessions, and we became friends after that.

I am now in the house after school. Today is Harvest Moon day. The moon’s glow pierces through the curtains, casting an eerie light into my room. The dread builds within me. When my parents are asleep, I go out at 11 o’clock. You can clearly see the full moon there. I go to the river. Five minutes left. Now ten seconds. Ten, nine, eight... “awoo awooooo” I howl. Yes, I am a wolf. I am half human and half wolf. I feel a rush far behind me. As I look behind, I think, “Is someone spying on me?”
