The Waltz for a Music Box

Maebh is pronounced “May-v”

A small, glass box carries a dainty ballerina figurine painted with dark and dusty lavenders.

Next to the box lies two black-and-white photos of a ballet team; “1953 performance of ‘The Purple-Headed Mountain’ by the Royal Ballet School” and “Brielle H. Estelle at the 1953 Awards Ceremony.”

Under the pictures and clay figurine, a description with gold corners reads;

“Brielle Heather Estelle is the first ballerina from the Royal Ballet School in London, UK to be awarded the De Valois Award, named after Irish-born, dancer, choreographer, director, and founder of the Vic-Wells Ballet Company, a predecessor of today’s Royal Ballet School in London, UK, Ninette de Valois. The De Valois Award is given to ballerinas…”

A young woman in designed mauve stands admiring the grand display.

“Maebh!”

She jumps. Her head shoots back.

A Bellarena oddly spins upon a music box;

If I were to pluck on your heartstrings, would you strum on mine?

Dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah

If that was all about nothing at all, Dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah

Dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah, dat dah-dah

New leaf turns over unwilling to fall, Dat dah-dah, dat dah-da-da-dah

Maebh walks into a small, timber-framed home. She sets her long-belted purse onto a fawn-white bench.

She looks through one of her gray-tinted window; watching the robin-blue waves reorganize the white satin sand. “Brielle” begins to play through her headphones.

She walks into a massive, rosen-barred complex, beside a grasping hill and a packhorse bridge. She’s greeted by a cloud-soft rug echoed below a golden chandelier.

At the end of one hall, a wood-framed glass case carries a white and blue periwinkle dress; “To the most prolific Bellarena, this house had ever seen.”

She admires the dress.

She carefully guides the case door open.

She brushes the tip of the painted skirt.

A pair of rounded, purpleheart ballroom doors float open.

She emerges; wearing the sweet violet dress.

A piano begins to play; Dum-mmh-mh-mmmh.

She makes her way to the center of the ballroom

Dum-mh-mmmh-mmh-mh-mh.

She gracefully wafts her hands above her head.

Dum-mhmh-mhh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmh.

Dum-mh-mh-mhmh, dum-mh-mh-mhmh.

She waltzes along the floor; frosted and brazen.

Dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmmh, dum-mh-mmmh-mmh-mhmh.

Dum-mh-mhmh-mh-mh-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mhh-mhmh.

Dum-mh-mh-mh-mh, dum-mh-mh-mhmh.

Dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmh.

The room begins to trace with ghostly statuettes.

Dum-mh-mhmmh.

Newborn trees flow through the stained glass, petrifying them.

Dum-mh-mhh-mh-mhmh, mh-mhmh-mh-mmh, dum-mh-mhmh.

As cobblestone paths paint the emerging white satin sand.

Dum-mh-mh-mh-mhmh-mh, dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mhmh, dum-mh-mh-mhmh.

Dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mhh, dum-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmh,

And a sleepy sailboat bows down the horizon.

dumhmh-mh-mhmmh.

They apparate into the new ballroom, waltzing under the moonlight.

Dum-mmh-mh-mmmh.

Dum-mh-mmmh-mmh-mh-mh.

Dum-mhmh-mhh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmh.

Dum-mh-mh-mhmh, dum-mh-mh-mhmh.

Dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmmh, dum-mh-mmmh-mmh-mhmh.

Dum-mh-mhmh-mh-mh-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mhh-mhmh.

Dum-mh-mh-mh-mh, dum-mh-mh-mhmh.

Dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmh - So until then I wish you well.

Dum-mhmh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mhmh - So until then I wish you well.

Dum-mh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mh-mmh - I love you my darling, farewell.

Dum-mh-mhmmh - My dear, Brielle.

The ghosts decay into the shadows as she is left alone, dancing among the stars.

Buh-duh-buh-duh-hmm.

Buh-duh-buh-duh-hmm.

The piano begins to fade.

Buh-duh-buh-duh-hmm.

Buh-duh-buh-duh-hmm.

Buh-duh-buh-duh-hmm.

Dum-mh-mhmmh.
