Prologue

Many moons ago…

“Father.” I barked softly, making sure I didn’t upset my father any further. He was already upset with the fact that there was another Pack joining us, and currently, we are anything but prepared for them.

“What is it, Willow? I’m busy getting ready for when the Wyld Pack comes,” he growled.

“Would you be mad if I found a mate in the Wyld Pack?”

He remained silent for a moment. “I guess not. But you’re only twelve moons old. Aren’t you young?”

“It was just a question. I’ll wait a couple more moons, of course.”

“Okay.”

“I have another question, too.”

“Be quick about it.”

“Would you be mad if my mate… wasn’t a male?”

My father paused and finally turned to look at me, his paw resting on mine. “If it makes you happy, Willow, then that’s all that matters.”

I bared my teeth in a small smile. “Thanks, Father.”

Later that night, as I prepared myself by the river for when the Wyld Pack arrived, a wolf cub about as old as me padded over.

“Mind if I rest with you?” Her tail was wagging slightly, and her eyes sparkled.

“Sure.” She took the spot next to me. “I’m Willow. And you are…?”

“Waverly. Of the Wyld Pack.”

“Oh. Your Pack is here already?”

“No, just my father and I. My father is the Alpha, you see.”

“And you are?”

“An Omega,” she confessed sadly, as if she didn’t want to be. To be fair though, I’d never heard of anyone who wanted to be an Omega, and Waverly seemed to be no different. “My father is proud of me nonetheless, but the rest of the Pack looks down on me.”

“I would never look down on you,” I say, placing my paw on hers. “When I was younger, about seven to eight moons, I was considered an Omega as well.”

“How many moons are you now?”

“Twelve. How about you?”

“Thirteen.”

“Well. Your luck may improve soon, now that you’ve met me,” I joked.

“Oh? Are you some sort of lucky charm?” She laughed at her remark.

I got some sort of impulse in me, and I licked her behind her ear. She flinched, quite startled by my decision, but smiled and licked behind my ear as well.

“Waverly? The Pack is about to come! Waverly!” I heard somewolf barking.

Waverly’s gaze became apologetic almost instantly. “Will I see you later?”

I nod. “Of course.”
