A Strange Awakening to Broken Pieces of Time

“Hello” a voice spoke as it staggered me awake. I woke up to nothing, only my empty room. I had just moved into this house and had already been noticing strange things. Out of the windows, sometimes I see bright green lights pointing at the house. I live alone so no one believes me. I have to go check what’s making those strange green lights.

I began to get ready to go out, put on jeans, a sweater, and boots. The mirror by the door seemed out of place, yet nothing was different. I stepped into the cold air, the wind like a knife stabbed me in the lungs. I could barely breathe, but I had to know what those lights were. Turning to look at my house once more. I saw a shadow with bright bluish green eyes as I doubled back on the shadow, it was gone. I thought the piercing wind and overwhelming cold was just getting to my head.

I reached the trail and continued down the path, taking in the scenery of the beautiful snowy forest with a perfect blanket of snow upon everything. In the distance I saw the same shadow as before. After it disappeared I thought I’d head back to the house and continue tomorrow.

As I followed the path back, the weather slowly covered it in a cold blanket of glistening snow. The trail was hard to navigate, from the time it took me to get back to my house the path had been completely covered with snow, glistening snow.

I approached the end of the path and saw my house. Something felt different, it seemed like every shadow in the forest was staring at me, piercing my mind and making my head slowly unravel. I decided to hurry into the house. As soon as I stepped into the door, I noticed something behind me in the mirror. It had long sharp claws, only a silhouette of its body was peeking from behind the corner. On further inspection, it was just a coat hanging.

I thought maybe some coffee would calm my mind, so slowly I made my way to the kitchen and checked everywhere in the house. Though I'm the only one who lives here. The kitchen was silent, and as dark as night at its peak. Turning on the light, I saw the shadows retreat into cupboards and closets. I began to make my coffee and only sometimes caught the darkness moving around as if it was alive.

I decided to sit down and finally write my story, so I decided to write about anything in my head. My pen glided across the paper and wrote “The eyes were watching me, never breaking contact. It almost felt as if I was being watched”. I stopped writing and noticed an uneasy feeling around me. Eyes, piercing eyes. They were in the closet as I turned. Was it just me or did my story come true?

I couldn’t believe what I had seen but I had to make sure. Walking to my closet the air felt heavy. It felt as if I was a thousand leagues deep into the ocean. But as I opened the closet there was nothing, not even anything moved around. I thought I may aswell sleep now.

Trying to fall asleep was difficult, every shadow seemed to move. I saw and heard stuff moving all around me. The last tiny bit of moonlight keeping my room alight, faded into the void. In the complete darkness, I had no choice but to rest my weary eyes.

The next morning, I looked out the window to see the bright green lights again. I had to know what they were. I got ready the same as yesterday and set out to find whatever was shining outside. I finished getting ready and took a look at the mirror, for a second I didn’t see my reflection. The reflection appeared abruptly and it seemed to follow behind my movements.

I dismissed it as just my mind playing tricks on me. “The same path, same direction, same lights.” I said as I closed the door behind me as I left. Without thinking my eyes checked every window, I saw voids of light retreat from my vision, once again it’s just my imagination.

I arrived at the path again, the snow felt as if it was warning me. But I was never one to follow superstition, so I continued. Around me I saw the snow pile up around the path, the narrow road somehow staying mostly dry of snow. In a small clearing I found a mirror, it stood around my height and was decorated with silver and gold. My mind felt like it was unfolding as I approached.

I tried with my best ability to run but something was drawing me toward the eldritch mirror. The reflection is not revealing, nothing but a skull and darkness reflected in the glass. A thought in my head was to step into the mirror. My foot lifted on its own and went through the mirror. I braced myself for the crash, but to my suprise my leg went through to another plane. Stepping fully through I found myself in complete darkness, I saw 2 purple eyes staring back at me through the fog. Nothing, there was nothing. Maybe if I took a second to close my eyes, something would give? I closed my eyes and upon opening them I was to my surprise, back in the forest. I panicked and started running down the path trying to run. I saw my house, but something was different. The windows looked like eyes staring back at me, and upon opening the door the house was in complete darkness. Slowly, I made my way to the lightswitch and noticed it was already on. The shadows moved around me, retreating as I turned on a flashlight.

The mirror by the door was broken, and it had no reflection. None of this could be real right? It couldn’t be. Suddenly, the crack from the glass seemed to glow blood red and break more into a pathway into a red mist. Without even getting a choice, I walked through the pathway into the mist.

The ground beneath me seemed to crack and separate like floating islands. There was a constant cry of the damned, skeletons riddled the broken floor, none of them were whole though. In the distance I saw what looked like an old Greek building. As I carefully navigated the floating lands, I looked down to see an endless sea of blood beneath me. The thought of falling crossed my mind but I continued. Finally, I was at the building’s steps. Walking up them and inside I saw broken statues all around. When I walked past the one statue the head seemed to disappear when I looked back.

Looking outside, I saw two bright white lights in the distance. An uneasy feeling came across me when I looked away, but looking back the lights were gone. None of this could be real. As I walked out of the building, the feeling of being watched came over me. I quickly looked around me only to see the same lights as before, but closer. They were calling to me, but I had to resist. I sprinted away as fast as I could without falling, but no matter what I did the lights seemed to get closer.

The ground was back to normal and the fog wasn’t as thick. I found myself near a farm, and I saw a sheep in the distance. I decided to go to the sheep to maybe see if there was a farmer nearby. Approaching the sheep, I stopped because everything went silent. The grass stopped blowing in the wind and the sounds of the damned had ceased.

The sheep’s head quickly turned and faced me, a loud crack was heard from its spine. I started to run as the sheep’s legs began to extend and break into almost a spider-like position. Ram horns grew out of its head, its hoofs snapped into claws, and its whole body was bleeding as it prepared to charge at me.

I started sprinting immediately and it followed behind. I thought maybe if I went into the farmhouse I might be able to get away. As I ran I could hear bones crack and the monster scream as it chased me. The door was already open so I ran in and shut it behind me. The monster tried to follow by reaching its bleeding limbs through the window. Another of them tried to get in too, thankfully they seemed to get into a fight and left me alone.

I sat alone in the house for a while, curled up in a ball, trying to piece any sanity I had left together. But as I did, my mind seemed to get worse. After what felt like hours upon hours, I fell asleep safely.

The next day, I got awoken by screams and cries from outside. Looking out the window, whatever those monsters were. They seemed to get their meal. I had to leave this house, but how. If I leave through the door or any window, I’ll surely be eaten by a monster. Then I had a thought, what if I went back through a mirror. In a fast manner I checked the house for a mirror.

Finally, I found a mirror upstairs and without thought stepped through only to find myself with a blood ocean beneath me. In a fit of panic, I started running around. The bones beneath me cracked and it only made me panic more. The edges of the ground seemed to close in.

I stopped panicking and looked around, I had noticed that I almost stepped off a ledge. The lights in the distance came back. Everytime I blinked they got closer, and closer. No, I'm not giving up. I can’t. But the lights are so nice. The closer they got the more my mind lost what it had left.

Once they had gotten close enough, the rest of my sanity seemed to drain away. As the lights stared at me, my arm slowly got pulled to the side. Suddenly, my arm ripped off. I couldn’t feel it. Then the other arm. Nothing. Even my legs, I felt nothing.

Laying on the broken ground, next to the ledge, I was nothing. I couldn’t move, but I was still alive somehow. I blinked, then I was falling. Then there was nothing. Lost where blood is an ocean and bones are the soil. Beware The Macabre.
