Mia's POV.
A/N
Hey guys :)
There are going to be other characters from my fantasy stories popping up in this one. You don't need to read them to follow this story, though. If you do decide to read them, I recommend doing it in this order:
Nature Calls - Monster - The Howl - Rogue - The Slayer.
Monster is kind of a dark story so it's not for everyone.
You should know that English isn't my first language so there will be spelling and grammar mistakes here and there. Hope you'll survive :)
Happy reading and much love to all you amazing readers.
Tina.
Mia's POV.
“Get out of my way, silly.”
I almost stumble over my big, Irish wolfhound, Mister, who’s jumping around me in circles while barking excitedly.
“I know, I know. We’ll go for a walk when I’ve gotten the firewood inside.”
Mister follows me inside my house where I put the firewood down in front of the fireplace so it’s ready for when I get back from my walk with him.
Don’t ask me why I chose to get an Irish wolfhound. I mean, he’s very big. I guess he just looked so lost when I saw him at the dog shelter. Plus, not many people would adopt a dog as big as him, but I didn’t mind him being big. So, I took him home with me and it turned out he fits me perfectly.
He’s calm when I need him to be and excited when I am. Plus, he protects me. Most humans won’t mess with him because he’s so big. They’re mostly afraid of him but if they took the time to get to know him, they would find out that he’s a very sweet and loving dog.
Pulling my red, curly hair up in a messy bun, I go towards the front door, pat my thigh, and say, “come on, Mister. Let’s go.”
He barks excitedly again and follows me out the door where he walks by my side while we go deep into the forest.
I just bought a house in the forest. There’s a town not far from here but I don’t want to live there. I like it here where it’s quiet. Besides, then I won’t accidentally create a tornado if I get angry. I mean, I have my powers under control but sometimes I can’t react quick enough to stop them.
You see, I can control the wind. I found out I could do it in my late teens and let’s just say it was a mess because I was a mess. I was a hotheaded teenager who couldn’t control my feelings, which affected the wind. I got so angry once that I almost blew my parent’s house away. By accident, of course.
My parents got so scared that they reported me to the police several times, but the police didn’t believe them. Who would?
My parents ended up throwing me out of their house, which made me an even bigger mess.
I didn’t know where to go or what to do with myself or my powers, so I hid in the forest. I couldn’t hide forever, though, because I had to get something to eat and someplace to stay.
At first, I went dumpster diving to get some food until an old lady named Phyllis saw me doing it.
She invited me into her home where she cooked me a warm meal and let me sleep on her couch. When she did that, I broke down. I couldn’t believe that a stranger would offer me that. That a stranger would care about my wellbeing the way she did.
Her and her late husband met in their fifties, and neither of them had kids on their own. Unfortunately, he died before I met her. She was struggling to find her place in the world after he died, just like I was struggling. I guess we found each other at the perfect time in our lives.
I started getting her groceries and helped her with her chores and other things. She ended up asking me to move in with her and I happily accepted. She became like a grandmother to me, and she treated me like I was her granddaughter. She still does.
After living with her for a year, she started to notice things about me. That I was different and that was when I told her about my powers. She didn’t freak out or anything when I had told her what I could do. No, she gave me a motherly hug and told me I was special, which made me break down again.
I was so scared she would freak out and throw me out, just like my parents did, but no. She just loved me more. And she still does. She helped me control my emotions and my powers. She’s been there for me through thick and thin.
When I told her about my powers, that was also when she told me about the supernatural world. She dated a werewolf before she met her late husband. I tried to not freak out, I really did, but I couldn’t help but think she was insane.
I didn’t show it, though, because she was so accepting when I told her about my powers, so I tried to accept her story about the supernatural world. I still thought she was insane, though. That was until she took me to a pack that lived in the forest where they showed me what they were. Werewolves.
Even though I saw them shift with my own eyes, I still had a hard time believing it. That was until I thought about my powers. People would think that was crazy too, so I had to accept it.
Mister jogs ahead of me, which he never does, and stops at a big log where he sniffs something. Then he looks back at me and whimpers, making my brows knit together before I ask, “what is it, boy?”
He whimpers again, so I jog up to him and look down. There on the ground, a small wolf pup is lying, whimpering too. My eyebrows shoot up to my hairline in surprise and I crouch down to see if the pup is friendly.
I carefully let it smell my hand, and when it doesn’t flinch back or growl, I scratch it behind its ears. It’s shivering, so I take off my jacket and put it over it before I gently lift it up in my arms. It whimpers again and so does Mister who nudges my stomach with his muzzle.
“I know, boy.”
Looking around, I try to see if I can spot other wolves but there aren’t any. As far as I know, there aren’t any wolves in this area but that doesn’t necessarily mean there aren’t any.
Looking around again, I sigh and look at the shivering pup. Then I look at Mister and ask, “what do you say, Mister? Should we take him home with us so he can get warm?”
He whimpers again, making me nod. “Alright. Let’s go.”
We make our way back towards my house while I wonder what granny is going to say. She moved with me, which made me glad because she’s getting old, and I want to look after her. When I asked her if she wanted to move with me, she didn’t think twice about accepting. In fact, she kind of demanded it.
I get to our house and carry the pup inside with Mister right behind me. Then I gently lie it down on the couch before I light a fire in the fireplace.
“Granny?”
She comes into the living room from the kitchen, drying her hands in a dishtowel and when she sees me, she smiles. “Hi, dear. Did you have a nice walk?”
“Yes. Uhm…” I point to the pup on the couch and say, “I found this little guy cold and alone. I didn’t know what to do, so I brought it home with me.”
Her brows knit together as she comes over to the couch and crouches down with difficulty. Then she strokes its fur and gets a worried look on her face.
“Poor thing. I didn’t think there were any wolves in this area. Well, no regular wolves anyway.”
I raise my brows before I ask, “are you saying there are werewolves here?” She simply nods before she humms, “mm hm. There’s a pack on the other side of the forest.”
“And I’m guessing you already knew that before we moved here.”
“Of course.”
I sigh. Of course she did. She loves werewolves and I should've known she already knew there was a pack nearby. She must've asked the pack in our old town if there were any near here.
“Why do you want to live near a pack?” I ask. She shrugs. “You know I love werewolves. Besides, I like living close to a pack. It makes me feel safe.”
I let out a big breath and put a blanket over the wolf pup so it can get warm. Then granny asks me to help her up before she goes towards the kitchen while saying, “let me get the little guy some food.”
Mister crawls up on the couch, lies down next to the pup, and rests his head on it. Smiling, I scratch him behind his ear and say, “good boy.”
Then I join granny in the kitchen where we cut some meat into small pieces that I bring back to the pup. It eagerly eats them, and I make sure to give Mister a couple of pieces too. When the pup is done eating, it falls asleep, and Mister rests his head on it again.
“So, what are you going to do with it?” granny asks. I look at her over my shoulder and say, “well, there must be an animal sanctuary near here. Maybe they would take it.” She thinks for a moment before she says, “if there isn’t, you could raise it.”
My eyebrows shoot up to my hairline. “Are you seriously suggesting that that I raise a wolf? I can’t do that. It deserves to be with its own kind.”
“But what if nobody wants to take it in?”
I shrug. “Well, you said there was a pack nearby, right? Maybe they would raise it.” She grins. “Great idea. Let’s go visit them. I’ll make a pie.”
I narrow my eyes at her before I ask, “was that your plan the whole time?”
She grins again. “Yes.” Rolling my eyes, I sigh. “You know werewolf packs don’t like strangers. They won’t let us past the gates to their territory.”
“We’ll see about that.”
She walks back into the kitchen to make the pie and I pinch the bridge of my nose. We can’t just walk up to a pack and say, “hey. We know you’re werewolves. Let us in.” They won’t trust us. Why would they?
When granny has made the pie, she just leaves the house, so I quickly make sure the pup is nice and warm and ask Mister to look after it. Then I hurry after granny who’s already walking through the forest at a fast pace, making me quirk a brow. She usually doesn’t walk that fast. She must be really eager to meet this pack.
Fifteen minutes later, we find the gates to the packs territory. Granny smiles at the guards and says, “hello. My name is Phyllis, and this is my granddaughter, Mia. We’re your new neighbors and we wanted to introduce ourselves.”
The guards look at each other with a surprised expression on their faces. “Uh, hello…”
Granny smiles again. “If you would please let us in; we would like to meet your Alpha.” The guards glance look at each other. Then one of them says, “I don’t know what an Alpha is and I’m sorry. I can’t let you past the gates.”
I’m about to pull granny away but she just stands her ground and puts her hand on her hip before she says, “listen, son, I know what you are, and I know Alpha Victor from up north.” Then she pulls her phone out of the pocket of her dress. “I will give him a call if you don’t let us in.”
The guard’s eyebrows shoot up to their hairline and they look at us with surprise written all over their faces.
Victor is a big deal because he’s powerful and working closely with The Elders. He was the Alpha of the pack we knew up north. That doesn’t mean they should just let us in on their territory, though.
I sigh and I’m about to pull granny away from the gates again but then one of the guard’s eyes glaze over. Then he says, “Alpha will be here in a minute.”
She nods as she smiles. “Good.” Then she starts to chit-chat with the surprised guards until a man comes up to the gates, looking at us suspiciously. Granny smiles and holds out her hand before she says, “hello. As I told your guards, I’m Phyllis and this is my granddaughter, Mia. We just bought the house in the forest not far from here.”
Then she holds out the pie. “We just wanted to introduce ourselves. Now, are you going to let us in? It’s rude not to offer guests a cup of coffee.”
I sigh and pinch the bridge of my nose. She can be so bossy and that’s not really something you want to be with an Alpha. We can’t just come here and demand him to let us in.
Just then, a woman comes up to the gates, smiling at us. “Welcome. I’m Luna Astrid and this grumpy old man here is Alpha Henry. It’s nice to meet you.” She gives Alpha Henry a look that makes him sigh and he nods at the guards who opens the gates.
“Come in. We have a fresh pot of coffee in the pack house. Follow me,” she says. The Alpha sighs again and steps aside so we can come inside, and we follow them up to their big pack house and into their kitchen. She motions to the kitchen table so we sit down as she pours each of us a cup of coffee.
Well, granny got her will. Might as well get to know Luna Astrid and Alpha Henry.
