The Black Hat

He wanted to make a very good first impression for this interview.

He dressed up quite ravishing like as he pulled his old suit out of Moff balls and dusted the dust bunnies off its sleeves. A suit I might add he did not wear since his 8th grade graduation ceremony at Green Meadows Middle school, he was happy to see it still fit in the right places. Places being a term he seemed to live by as most of his own belongings was slung between two houses. A child of divorce was written all over his habits he had developed being a young teen till now-a senior in high school.

Leaving up to a corny tenure of being a green meadows “Warthog” to be in his rear view soon enough. Gracing the stage with the rest of his classmates at “The Mogadore Theater.” An everlasting goal he was too focused on reaching and succeeding at as, the rest of his family had never seen the inside halls of the high school (or any of the other schools of that matter). For upon his dad’s side, it was really believed of the hard work you put into the world will be the same as you get back in gifts.

“The Farmer type” as you can imagine.

He was more serious of his studies. Something he picked up from his mom’s side. A 50/50-coin flip on a lot of days when he was growing up suffering through “the obvious reasons” of the divorce between his folks. He was not alone though, as his frequently visiting cousin Paula would act like his substitute older sibling and hang with him.

Something that she personally always had enjoyed considering her side of things in life was always dark as well. Loosing her mom at a young age. Then living with their grandmother till she was albe enough to strike out on her own. Life for Paula Sheen was not what I am sure what she intended. So, with that in mind and her cousin striking a similar relation to her own journey she, made it her side mission to make sure baby cousin Dylan was NEVER ALONE.

Even now as he tightened the blue tie tightly around his large neck and fluffed the white buttoned up shirt as much as he could for the last time-a friendly car honk was herd from outside in his moms Driveway.

“DILLLLLL Paula is here to take you to your 1st interview!!!”

“Got it Mom...”

“You Better Hurry Mr. Sheen-it take about a 10 min drive to that “Bacon Bottoms” and its about to be 1:00pm, your interviews scheduled at 1:15pm.-plus its lunch hour traffic so... move that large ass”

His Mother Penny had an extremely stale way of motivating her child. Even now when he was about strike out into the world, she did not seem to be joyous or confident in his attempt. Dylan then with a faint flicker of his navy-blue blazer to pull off his full wardrobe he, rushed downstairs to an awaiting Penny with her Red painted Finger nails resting over her crossed arms. The color of the shade of red matched her colored long hair. A trait she wanted to keep for good as it branded her a glorious reputation she brought over to real life. Like Clark Kent and superman. Except she did not know how to turn off her “superman gimmick.”

I suppose its more gratifying being called “Ruby” all the time then Penny Arthur- (her maiden name before she was married to Dylans Father). Dylan had a confident smile as he approached her on the outside but, deep inside he groaned like the undead.

“Wow I am so glad your Dad Gave us that suit! I am still in disbelief that still fits wow”

“Yeah, I am happy”

“Yass”

She said in an arrogant tone as she twirled around to retrieve the vanilla office envelope that contained his resumé.’ As well as another piece of paper from his high school principal describing the work ethic and class Dylan Presents. He allowed her inner bully to run a bit with the comments of the suit still being albe to fit as he was in a rush.

He took the Vanilla envelope and quickly ran out of the door to the awaiting Older Cousin.

“What no Kiss Goodbye? No hug for good luck?”

“No ma I do not want this suit ruined. It might rip”

“Yeah, you might be right...”

She said again in a lower groan herself admitting to her son’s incredible physic.

Looking down then continuing Eye contact while finally shutting the front door. Dylan stood in amazement now as that action of disrespect hurt him a little.

Paula from inside of her car witnessed the encounter as she then masked her actions of being playful. Pulling him in her car quickly laughing and hysterically trying to take off like a rocket to get Dylan to his 1st interview on time. Despite the difficulties she may face along the way.

“Get in here Big Boy. We got to take you To Bacons Bottoms.”

As her smile then screech turned into a full fledge war cry peeling the black rubber from her very tires disembarking her crooked aunts Driveway.

Dylan and her laughed and cackled at the rush of excitement her need for speed skills was displaying as the outside landscape of green meadows was passing through their purview then Paula’s rearview.

A beautiful normal rural place to grow up in and around.

As certain landscapes that was flying past the windshield in front of them triggered fun memories of there childhoods. As their childhoods was always attached at the hips like they were conjoined twins but, due to there personal issues they were introduced to them Far as, (The trauma). Both, Dylan, and Paula were some wild children.

And not just them as past friendships of there childhoods came rolling back, calling out there names individually like it was a game between them.

“Wow Paula-Remember Chris? You know Chris May when he and I were trying to skateboard near the police station over there? Instead, we got sidetracked and knocked over old man Craigs Trash cans? Causing Debris to flow all over the road…”

“Yeah, I remember. Had to pose as Penny for that. She still got called though”

“Cops. Pshhh”

Both Sheens echoed the response followed up with a laugh.

Next it was Paulas Turn. As a few mins went by from the marker of Old Man Chester Craigs residence. As an old forgotten Store Plaza came into view. A Plaza that served as a graveyard of sorts for all the forgotten trash and human waste living and dead reside at. As it was a personal segregation by the town council to highlight the consequence of a lot of their actions, I guess.

Actions that were taken from them, other people, and a lot more other nightmare.

A Opposite encounter of feelings compared to what it used to represent.

As within that split second. Time seemed to stop for One Paula Sheen as she traveled to the happier times of her childhood. A day of exploring with their grandparents. Hers and Dylans. Her tiny hands held tight by the wrinkled paws swinging her back and forth as though they were reenacting a swing in the playground. Stores of new and old remained on the table for ones convenance to use with bright green grassy play areas of sidewalks alike for the locals to use and admire scenery. (Much to Paulas Dissatisfaction) as they also had a small group of geese and smaller animals concur there. Making her feel as though she was a doctor Dolittle in the making. It was a saddened thing when it was animals that ended up being the downfall of that same place.

The same place from her youth that she remembered most that brought her the most joy. A feeling she did not experience a lot of.

As rodents and other various Deer was drawn to the area. Including Racoons that made their homes in the small trees nearby. Raccoons that had ended up attacking a few pedestrians that was just using the sidewalks that was available.

It caused a minor pandemic to Green Meadows. As Racoons (by nature) are a lot of scary carriers of some life-threatening diseases to humans. It even Had a little spotlight in the national news.

The endgame was this place that seemed to represent the evil side of Green Meadows now. Had no choice on the matter.

As the Feds Quart tined the area. And systematically “bubbled it.” Torching and disinfecting the area. Making sure the infection or the bug that was transmitted from the Pests that infiltrated that “Serentiy House” did not escape.

What remains now Infront of them, Dylan, and Paula.

At the first stop light of there quickened journey looking over together. Was the after thoughts when the Feds took down their huge structure.

The complex that was bright white over the bricked matter of its construction now became a Frankenstein outlook of dark dirt marks. Cracks in the paint. A ruination of itself from when it was.

No more windows of the stores that shined the rays of sun as it did. Or the darkened blue undertone of the outline of the store signs above. As it now is black and rotted being made from wood.

The grassy Places that held the wildlife had now grown out of control into a forest of grass with the trees becoming a skeleton of themselves.

The Serenity House had become “Satan’s House.”

As a few local Junkies and homeless was walking around within the old parking lot.

Free to roam and to do whatever at.

It is a haven whence the cops do not cross over too.

Paula stood in tranced in the game her and her cousin was playing with one another but, she was unable to mutter that beautiful memory of That place. She had to keep that to herself.

“BEEEP” “BEEP”

“YOOOO COUSIN!!”

Paula snapped out of it coming back to reality within the moment as the car behind her had to remind her to go. With the light above was the suitable color.

“Sorry shit!” she said quickly accelerating her ship to the destination on hand.

Dylan fell silent for a min startled.

He looked at his cousin again with a dreadful stare as, it was to seem that he was about to get upset.

He took a breath for a moment as he understood her personal grudge and history with that place now, behind them. He decided in that rare moment to be her shoulder to cry on as he said.

“Serentiy? Am I right? “

“Yep. Yeppers. Are you nervous?”

The older Cousin quickly went into her other role as she was ready to be the common pleaser before they arrived during the Lunch Hour traffic.

“Yeah, um I am ok. I am ready you know. I need some money, right? “

“Damn right. Cause you want that BIG dodge truck? Right?”

“Damn skippy”

The goal in mind for every senior in high school when they are on the verge of achieving their drivers license is a car of their own. Dylans at that same goal line before hiking the pigskin. He was albe to negotiate with his mom to use her little silver PT Cruiser for the actual testing but, not to own for himself.

She instructed that iron back bone of his to go and get it. Earn it. Thus, is current state of mind.

He was hungry for the “not so normal” transporters.

A pre-Steen all white Dodge truck with a decent lift kit glided across his computer screen when he was looking for the ads online. It was safe to say it was love at 1st site.

He could not help but to let it slip to Paula.

What he should have done though was to try and keep it secret from his obsession of a friend “Byron Doul”

“Obsession” being the key term when you describe Byron. Dylan did not judge though it was Paulas Definition she bestowed.

Before you knew it, they pulled into the busy parking lot.

Which Paula threw the car in park. Smiling at her cousin reaching over embracing him to do well and “Do not” become nervous.

Dylan smiled as he opened the passenger Door and got out quickly looking at the glassy front door.

“Hey you forgot something...”

Paula screamed from the inside.

Dylan hunched down to see inside Paula was holding onto Dylans Lucky Black Hat.
