Chapter 1
“Stop! Just stop!” I yell at the group of people I have spent years growing up near. They are thinking they are going to go and find the person I love just to harm them. They all stop and they see the frustration on my face. I will go against the whole world if it meant that that the person I love is safe.
My feet hurt, I need to get back home. I wonder what uncle made for dinner. Please let it be ham. I get out of the woods and start to head home. I start to walk past the people who look over at me and wave. I hold my spear steady , pointing it to the sky, and I wave back. Im the respected warrior and hunter in the Nohebi Clan. I’m the one that protects my clan from the people of the Syrena Kingdom that isn’t so far from here. My people are happy and it’s my job to keep it that way.
I get to my house and I get out of my working clothes, I run out of the house and I head for my uncles place. Normally, every Wednesday, I go over to my uncles so that I can have dinner with him. He just cooks some of the best food ever.
I get to his house and I quickly get to the table where he already has food prepared. I start to eat it and all of my thoughts are completely gone. He sees and laughs, “How was your day, Arrow?” he asks. I stop eating for a second and look at him, “It was good, nothing really happened. Look, you need to become a chef with this cooking!” I continue eating. He lets out a big laugh, “Boy, you know that there’s only one chef here and that’s not about to be me!” I finish the food. “There can be two!” I yell, He let’s put a big cackle and he opens the door for me to leave. My back slouches and I let out a big sigh. “Bye, then..” He waves as a response.
I get back to my house and I don’t feel like moving anymore, I just get down on the floor and lay down there. I hear horns calling out to my ears and I sigh, kicking around everywhere before I get up. I put my working clothes on and head outside. No one is outside after the horns are blown, the horns are a sign that someone has entered our land.
I run over to the edge of our land line and I see a building from the kingdom. A window, that’s open, has a man’s head poking out of it. The man’s hair was a nice dark red color, it looks beautiful as the long hair is flowing in the wind softly. If I have to be honest, it has me blushing. He’s beautiful. I’ve never seen anyone like it.
The man looked over and he saw me, we made eye contact. His eyes widen for a moment but then he just smiles and waves at me, making me wave back. His smile was even prettier. It made me want to get closer. I want to be closer. Closer to him.
I start to walk over to him, I couldn’t reach him because he is on the second story of the building he is in. I look around me and I see no one else in sight, just him.
He smiles at me, “Hello.” He says with his calming voice. I take my mask down to show my face, “Hello..” I say, not knowing what else to say. “What’s your name?” He asks. I grip onto my spear and I answer him by saying “Arrow.” He smiles even brighter than before, “I’m Drew, nice to meet you, Arrow.” I smile after he says that. I hear my name getting called after a minute of us talking. “Oh. I’m guessing you have to go. Well, it was nice to meet you, Arrow. Will you be able to come tomorrow?” He leans against the window frame. “Uhm, Yeah. I should! I guess I will see you tomorrow, Bye!” I run off and go back to my job.
I looked all over and found nothing, now i’m just laying in my bed. That man was beautiful, just saying it again because it’s true. He’s perfect. But he’s apart of the Syrena Kingdom. If I get caught talking to him, i’m done for. There was a knock on my door, I get up slowly and go over to see who is at the door. Once I open it I see my best friend, Wren, who has been on my side since we were kids. They too, has been hiding something. A person they love. Except the person isn’t human, but is a dragon. His name is Haven, he is such a sweet angel.
Wren immediately walks into my house as soon as I open the door. I sigh “Yes, Wren, you’re welcome to come inside if you please!” I say sarcastically. They laugh, just going over to my table and sitting down on my chair. “Yeah, thanks for letting me in.” They still laugh. I go over and sit on the chair from across the table. They look around, “Y’know, you have such a big house, well to the people of Nohebi, that no one else even lives in.” They hear my sigh from across the table “Stop, this is the one hundredth time you’ve said that.” Wren laughs.
“You find a person you like yet?” They ask. “No. Actually… uhm, actually, no.” I answer, kind of hesitating. Wren gives me that seriously look, “You did find someone.” They see me nod slowly and vaguely. Wren immediately jolts up, “Who?!” They yell. I take a second, “It’s a human. From Syrena. I only saw them today, but it’s like love at first sight.” I smile.
“A human? From Syrena? You better keep that a secret. You don’t know what could happen then.” Wren sighs, getting up and grabbing some of my food. “I know. I’m good at keeping secrets, it’s fine.” I turn around to see them eating. “You gonna pay me for eating my food?” I ask them, Wren just shakes their head as a no.
I yawn and go over to my bed, laying down. “You going to sleep already?” Wren asks, still eating. I nod my head and fall asleep.
Once I wake up, I sit up and look out of my window, seeing that it’s morning but not time for the others to wake up yet. I put on my clothes and my ear covers to hide my pointy ears before rushing out of my house. I go to the edge of our land line and I cross it by going to that building that Drew lies in. I go to the front of the building and go in, seeing a person at a desk once I walk in. “Hello, i’m here to see Drew.” I say, looking around. The person looks at me and squints their eyes at me. “What’s your name?” They ask. “Uhm, Arrow?” I smile. Their head goes up, “Ah, yes, Drew’s been talking about you. Quite early for someone to be visiting, but you can go. His room is upstairs, first room on the left.” They look down at a paper on the desk and I start to go upstairs, knocking on the door. Surprisingly, there was a answer. A weak-ish sweet voice trying to yell “Come in” at me. I open the door and I come in. He smiled when he saw me.
“How did you figure your way in here?” He asked. I sat down on a chair next to the bed, “I have my ways.” He laughs after hearing me. “Do you need something?” His smile went away and a curious look appeared on his face. “No, I just wanted to visit you, honestly.” I smiled, his smile reappeared. “Can I ask you something?” I ask, he nods. “Why are you in a hospital?” His smile fades slowly. “I have a bad illness. It’s not a curable one either. We don’t know how it happened or even what it is.” His smile came back after he said that and looked at me. He could see the look on my face, the shock. He placed his hands onto my cheeks and I rested my head onto his hands, closing my eyes. We stay like this for a minute and I open my eyes to see him smiling at me. I smile back and he catches himself smiling, his face turning a bright red after which makes me laugh.
“I-I’m sorry- I didn’t mean to smile like that- I-…” he went silent and just buried his face into his hands. I uncover his face and he looks up at me. I look into his eyes as he looks into mine. I get closer. and closer. He gets closer and both of our eyes close as our lips touch. We kissed, for a minute, too. Until, I heard a whistle, a loud whistle. It was the people of Nohebi calling for me. I pull away from him, “Are you okay? What’s wrong?” He asks. I hear it again. “I have to go back, people will get suspicious of me. See you again tomorrow?” I ask as I get closer to the door, he nods while a smile appears on his face.
I run out and I go back to Nohebi, I see Wren and my uncle, waiting for me at the center of the little town. “Where were you?” My uncle asks. I think for a second, “I was hunting, what else would I be doing?” I say while walking towards them.
“Well, you were gone for longer than expected so we were just making sure you weren’t killed or anything.” My uncle walks away and Wren just gives me a look. “Meet me at your house later.” Wren says. I sigh, “It’s my house, I didn’t even say you can come.” They start to walk away, waving their hand up and yelling “It’ll be fine! I basically live there!” I just groan.
