Prologue-The Forest Of Bloodshed

“Ready your weapons” Squad Leader Robinson quietly said over his shoulder from the tree he stood behind. He pulled back his cloak sleeve and looked down at the digital radar on the bottom of his arm, three red dots glowed upon his face from the screen. The screen that is attached to his “Lifeline.” Machinery that covers the entirety of his left forearm. Terrence, who stood behind another tree not far from Robinson, grabbed a foot-long blade from his right leg, when he did a faint reflection of the night’s moonlight reflected off the black metal.

Camila who stood on the other side of Robinson reached over her shoulder towards her back and grabbed the long rifle that was almost taller than her. Turning her arm over she too saw the red dots that awaited in the forest. Aspen, another squad member, came from behind Terrence; he held one of his daggers in hand. “What are your orders sir?” He asked Robinson quietly, keeping a grim look on the half of his face that isn’t hidden. His dirty blonde hair could slightly be seen under his red hood. “You and Lia (code name for Amelia) contain the one on the left side of the forest, rift farther in but not on top of your target.” He gave the orders that were replied with a nod and a quick turn back past Terrence. Then Robinson turned towards Terrence, “You and Cam (code name for Camila) take the one on the right, same orders but try to draw this one towards this side of the forest, we don’t want our fight interfering.” He looked back towards his arm to see the dots had slightly separated. ” Understood” Terrence replied, he started walking towards Camila but stopped. “But sir, are you going to fight one all by yourself? Maybe it’s best to wait until we kill this one...” Terrence couldn’t help but feel a sense of worry for his squad leader, even though his leader is highly skilled. “No, follow the orders you were told.” Was his reply, Terrence continued walking towards Camila before telling her their orders, she let her rifle hang to her side before lifting her left arm, Terrence did the same and in unison they clicked the same button on their Lifelines. Instantaneously their cloak image blurred and their bodies folded into nothing leaving behind black smoke. The same black smoke followed moments after on Aspen and Amelia’s side, shortly after Robinson put back on his hood he clicked the button on his arm, blurred and folded into nothing but smoke.

Terrence miscalculated his rift which is a huge mistake. Immediately seeing the tall black figure floating above him he held up his blade, the black shadow noticing the squad member shifted into a cloudy black smoke letting out a screech as it did. It quickly grew in size forming a serpent head with huge fangs. “Camila!” Terrence yelled as he scrambled back. The snake darted towards Terrence, smoke trailing behind it. Shrieking in fear he fell to his back, when he did a suppressed shot flew over Terrence, quickly followed by another. The snake screeched as the bullets ripped through the side of the snake head separating some of the smoke but it quickly reformed. The serpent flew up into the sky but didn’t fly high, with rippling speed the serpent flew in Camilas direction; Diving down towards Camila who was now aiming another shot looking through her scope. She let out one shot before the demon completely covered her.

Terrence quickly got up looking towards the trees where Camila stood a moment ago. But she’s not there. “Cam?” He called out towards the trees. It was hard to see in the forest since the moonlight was shaded by the tall trees. Where is she? He wondered, fear spreading inside of him. He lifted his Lifeline arm and clicked on the flashlight. He jogged towards the spot she was but quickly stopped when he saw a figure walk from behind the tree. It’s too dark to see them but they’re short. “Cam?” He called out, raising his flashlight in the direction of the person, it is Camila. “Cam are you alright?” Terrence darted towards her, reaching her he immediately checked her for wounds. She didn’t reply so he grabbed her by the arm and led her out of the trees. “Cam talk to me, are you alright?” Terrence dimmed the flashlight and pointed it in her face. She doesn’t have any wounds but she isn’t talking. Why isn’t she talking? He questioned in is head. “Why did you do it?” Camila spoke with her usual soft tone. “What? Why did I do what?” Terrence has no clue what she’s talking about. Her eyes looked at him but with no emotion behind them. “Why did you do it?” A tear rolled down Camila’s face. A moment after it was followed by a burst of blood from the corner of her mouth, it quickly formed a stream. Terror exploded throughout Terrence. “Camila are you..” He stopped talking and paused for a moment, then slowly looking down the terror got worse. He had no clue how it was possible but he isn’t thinking of the possibilities right now, he shrieked at the sight of his blade stabbed deep into Camila’s stomach, blood spilled from the wound and the skin around the stab started to redden. The poisonous reaction. “No! No! Camila!” He yelled quickly yanking the blade out and covering the wound with his cloak sleeve, laying down Camila he reached for the healing patch in his right leg pocket but they aren’t there. Why aren’t they there? He made sure he had all the equipment before leaving. ” Hold on! You’re going to be alright.” Terrence reached for her healing patches that should be in the same spot, but his hope was crushed even further as he found no patches.

Then that’s when he realized Camila’s Lifeline or Sniper aren’t on her. Terrence was shocked at the sight of the missing equipment, taking off her lifeline in the middle of a battle.. She would never, thought Terrence, tears now rolling down his face. Then that’s when it happened, another suppressed pierce through the night, the bullet traveled through the air, this time Terrence didn’t hear the suppressed rifle. Falling onto his back, a puddle of blood began to grow under him. It feels cold, whatever hit me feels cold on my back...It’s starting to sting but for some reason it doesn’t hurt too much. Terrence’s thoughts lingered on the feeling for a moment.

” Who shot me? He looked over next to him to see Camila’s once bleeding body now fading into black smoke. What!? But.. She was just... He was shocked to hear Camila’s scream erupt throughout the trees, “Terrence!!” looking over at is lying body she dropped her rifle whose barrel let out a small trail of gray smoke, then she raced toward him. Terrence began to question everything he’d witnessed. But how? She was just stabbed by me... I saw the blood... It felt so real.. Pain suddenly erupted throughout his back, the ache of poison now spreading to his legs and upper back. Camila dropped to her knees next to him, turning him onto his back she lifted his head into her lap, tears poured down her face. “Terrence?! But you were a demon!!” For a moment she reached for her healing patches, but shortly realized she shot him with the bullets made from the metal they hunt demons with, getting shot by this metal makes it impossible to survive. No matter what happens a human shot or pierced by the metal will surely melt away. Terrence’s mind eaten away by the events he thought he witnessed, a third of his body now a dark red from the poison, decided to force himself not to question any further, and simply accepted his last sight to be Camila’s crying face. But the death he didn’t mind since it was with the right person didn’t last long, the smokey demon flew into the air from the trees behind Camila, it formed the snake head but this time with arms that have menacing claws. Diving down it lifted Camila into the air. ” Ahhhhh, help!′ She screamed. Terrence shrieked in horror, unable to speak because of the pain. No!! Camila! He screamed in his head. The poison has now burned a third of his body, his face and consciousness barely remained. Blood spilled out of his mouth. Looking to the sky during what Terrence realized was his final moment he was departed with a horrifying scene. The demon grabbed hold of Camila’s head and body, holding her in the air for a moment, making sure Terrence could see. Then effortlessly, the claw pulled her head from her body, her scream erupted throughout the forest for a second but was quickly silenced. Blood spilled over her gray cloak that is now half red. The serpent head opened its mouth lifting her head above it, the claw dropped it. No!! Thought Terrence but it was his last as the poison spread to his head immediately shutting down the brain.

Now that the poison has consumed the entirety of his body it has begun to melt, not even leaving behind the bones, this is called the evaporation phase, in approximately 5 minutes the remains will be gone. The demon now lifted the rest of Squad member Camila Estobar, also referred to as Cam. But as it did, the lifeline that dangled on her left arm started to let out a beep, a beep that didn’t end. One that sounded like the never ending beep of a flat line in the hospital. It continued for a moment then out of nowhere the machine-like brace erupted into an explosion, sending shards of the metal in every direction. As they passed through the demon it screeched in pain. The metal shards gashed through the serpent’s head, this time the demon was unable to reform the gashes. Because it slowly began to evaporate as the gashes grew larger. The serpent flew around, screeching as it did, but the dissolving sped up, evaporating all that was left of the demon.

Not a moment later Terrence’s Life line replicated the same explosion, digging a hole into the ground and spreading his melted remains

On the other side of the forest, Aspen peeked around a tree, a demon in an opening not to far from where he hid was in its original form, smokey figure but with a skull like face, it wore a torn up black cloak. It is crouched over what appears to be a dead animal, feasting on it. “Shoot it when I rush it from the side, hopefully this can end quickly once I distract it. But make sure you don’t miss it, even if you hit me” Aspen whispered to Amelia who stood behind a tree next to him, also peering at the demon. ” Alright” She whispered back grabbing the pistol from under her dark green cloak, she grabbed the long barreled gun from her a holster at her waist. Pointing the black pistol into the air she cocked it back, ensuring Aspen she’s ready. “Alright, wait for me to get its attention” Grabbing his other blade from behind his waist he walked from behind the tree. Taking a breath as he entered the opening, leaving behind the covering of the trees. As he stepped he widened his walking route, trying to get a side approach of the demon. It hasn’t noticed him, its attention fully indulged in the raw flesh of an animal. Getting into swinging range Aspen lunged forward stabbing both blades downward, thinking he caught the demon off guard as soon as he lunged the demon evaporated into black smoke but reformed in thin air above the fallen Aspen. “Lia!” He screamed, yanking one of his blades from the dirt and flipping onto his back. As he did the demon tripled in size screeching down at Aspen.

Three suppressed shots quickly passed through the demon. It shrieked in pain, flying up as Amelia shot. Quickly getting up Aspen clicked the button on his Lifeline that teleported him back next to Amelia. Panting as he grabbed hold of the tree. “It knew I was coming, I don’t know how but it did.” Aspen said out of breath. “Aspen..” Amelia looked at Aspen with discomfort on her face. “What?” Aspen sheathed one of his daggers and looked to Amelia. “The demon rifted.” The words smacked Aspen in the face, it was something he heard had never been done before. “What do you mean?! No, it just flew fast enough to dodge my attack.” Aspen argued, his hair shaking as he shook his head. “No it didn’t... It.. It rifted Aspen.” Amelia was shocked at the words herself but immediately took action. “We need to kill it. Now.” She walked out into the opening and Aspen followed. “Wait, if it did something that’s never been done before we need to alert our leader.” Aspen tried to keep up with Amelia but she was determined to walk around looking in the sky. Gun still in hand. But she isn’t listening. “Amelia!” He grabbed her shoulder. Which was responded by an annoyed tone “Don’t you understand?! If we don’t kill it, it’s going to kill the rest of our squad. The leader has his own demon to worry about, now get ready to do your duty!” She yelled, yanking her shoulder away and looking back up at the night sky. Fear mixed in her tone of annoyance.

Aspen knows she’s right, this is his sworn duty. Even if an unusual occurrence happens in the field they have to carry out their mission. Turning over his arm he clicked the digital radar, it scanned the surrounding area but picked up no red dots. Aspen clicked a few more times eager to pick up the presence of the demon. After a few moments of staring at the glowing screen no dots appeared. “I’m still getting nothing” Aspen looked back towards Amelia but she wasn’t there. “Amelia?!” He quickly turned his head in different directions but as he looked left he could see the demon again. This time it’s hovering a few feet from the ground staring intensely at Aspen. For a moment it did nothing, then it did the weirdest thing that shocked him. It raised its skeleton arms, then after a moment flames began to form in a ball in its hands. What the hell?! Thought Aspen, how is that possible?? But he only had a second to think before the demon threw the ball of fire at Aspen, out of reaction he dove to the side, barely dodging the fire by a hair. As it hit the ground behind him it exploded, leaving a hole in the dirt. The fireball was immediately followed by another, Aspen who didn’t try to dodge this one, knew he wouldn’t be quick enough. Slicing at the fire ball with his dagger he felt his blade hit a rock like ball that flew to the left in flames in the direction of a tree.

This fireball was followed by the demon itself but this time Aspen wasn’t quick enough to respond with a counter. The demon passed through him knocking his dagger from his hand and knocking him on his back. Flying above him the demon stopped and hovered over him, then black rusted chains fell from its cloak slamming into Aspen and wrapping around his body. “Ahh, Amelia. Help!” The demon lifted the chains higher pulling Aspen into the night sky, but quickly slammed him back down towards the ground. Repeating this several times. “Aspen!!” Screamed Amelia as she ran from behind a tree, her cloak ripped with gashes that appeared to be from a dagger, the gashes were from her own fight against a demon in the form of Aspen. She raised her gun letting off four shots, only hitting two that seemed to do nothing to the demon, after passing through the demon it reformed the bullet gashes in a matter of seconds. Amelia’s gun clicked to a stop. “Dammit!” She yelled, dropping the gun and grabbing an eight inch blade from a leg sheath. She began to run towards Aspens aid but quickly stopped at the sight of the demon lifting Aspen in the air in front of it, the chains turned his face towards Amelia so she could see the disoriented Aspen, whose head hung, blood dripping from his soaked bangs. “Mmm... Amm.. Amelia” Aspen lifted his head slightly, trying his best to get out the words. “I-I.. love...y-you..” As the words slowly left his mouth the once black chains suddenly grew a dark red. “Ahhhhh” Aspen screamed in agony as the chains heated up.“Stoppp!! Please stop!!!” He shrieked, “Noo!! Aspen!!” Amelia continued running towards the demon but was met by a fireball that exploded in front of her. She fell back barely missed by the impact of the blast. Aspen no longer screamed. His head hung as the demon flew closer to Amelia. Steam rose from the chains. “Nooo!!” Tears streamed down Amelia’s face, to see him like that and to be helpless to his aid..

As if it wasn’t enough the chains began to move towards his arms, hanging from his arms another chain came from the demons cloak grabbing hold of Aspen’s waist. Then, without hesitation the chains pulled at Aspens arms, with no resistance the arms ripped from their sockets. Blood sprayed out of the ripped shoulders. Amelia fell completely silent at the sight, turning her head away from looking at his dismembered body but the demon pointed its right arm towards Amelia and a force pulled her head back towards the horrific scene. The chains dropped the arms to the ground, which fell into the huge puddle of crimson red that formed. The chains grabbed hold of Aspens legs now, the one that was once at his waist moved to his neck. “No...Please, No!” Yelled Amelia. But her pleading did nothing, the chains pulled in opposite directions. They didn’t fail and ripped Aspens body in two, guts and organs spilled out. Adding to the gruesome act. Amelia felt worse than at loss for breath, in fact she didn’t breathe at all, words nor a scream formed as the knot in her throat didn’t allow her to. The chains dropped the legs to the ground but held onto his upper body, pulling what’s left of Aspen towards the demon, it opened its ripped cloak, inside was complete darkness. No longer being pulled by an uncontrollable force Amelia looked down at the grass and began to weep. The chains pulled Aspens dismembered body into its cloak and disappeared. Another chain followed after but one stayed behind. Then, Aspen’s lifeline began to beep. Grabbing the demon’s attention the chain quickly lifted Aspen’s left arm, a green flat line glowed on the screen atop of his forearm. It beeped for a moment, the demon fixated his focus on the machinery. Blood covered most of the lifeline but did not affect the technology. After a moment of holding it in front of the demon the chain lunged the arm towards Amelia, its long beep traveling as it flew towards her. Looking up at the flying object, she realized what was about to happen. One last tear rolled down her cheek as she closed her eyes and forced a smile on her face. Picturing Aspens smiling face in her mind. ” I love you too, Aspen. ″ was the whisper that broke the knot in her throat.

Inches from hitting the ground next to her the arm exploded, destroying Amelia’s upper body and head. Metal shards flew everywhere but before they could travel far the demon disappeared into black smoke. The part that was left of Amelia’s body fell back, the only thing remaining, her left arm that homes her lifeline, and only part of her exploded body and shoulder.

In the middle of the forest, Robinson’s radar glowed in the shadow of the trees, one red dot glew up at him. It appears to be some yards away but not too far. Robinson clenched hold of the sword handle that hung across his back. Not pulling the sword out, he clutched it with anger for a moment, replaying the explosion of what can only be a lifeline self-destructing. He walked towards the opening in front of him, as he left the covering of the trees, a beep echoed from under his cloak. He lifted and turned his arm to see the dot traveling quickly in his direction. He stopped walking this time pulling the long sword from its sheath. The black blade immediately glowed to life, the small cracks in the edge of the blade glowing a dim purple. He sat in a criss-cross position, laying his sword across his lap. His hood hung almost completely over his face, though the hood covered his eyes, the cloak’s technology is designed for users to be able to see through the hood allowing hunters or users in general to hide their face. But Robinson closed his eyes, completely cutting off his vision. He let out a breath. ” It’s me again” He started out loud. “Been doing this when I can but still don’t know how to start these... I don’t know if I’ve been talking to no one all the times I’ve done this but if I haven’t been, grant me strength. Grant my weapon the strength.” He touched his blade with two fingers. “And please... Spare me another battle.”

Following his prayer a loud screech erupted ahead of him, opening his eyes he could see a demon flying out from the bushes of the trees soaring in his direction. It didn’t take a form, the skeletal demon was quickly close in front of him. Robinson leaped from his sitting position, grabbing his sword from mid air he spun the long blade in a circular motion with his right arm. The blade is huge, because of Robinson’s training he’s able to swing it with ease despite his slim build. Its silver center blade reflected the bright moonlight, the outer rim of black raged a brighter purple as Robinson prepared for battle. The demon now reached above him diving down from the air, reaching its arms forward as it lunged in his direction. Swinging the thick sword straight down the demon separated into black smoke when they made contact. Did he die that easily? Wondered Robinson for a moment, but quickly his attention was turned to the instant reformation of the demon in the air towards the right of him, this time a chain swung in his direction. “The hell!” Yelled Robinson as he swung his sword meeting the chains in the air in front of him. The demon flew back into the air, probably going to try and circle back around he thought in his mind, Robinson started to run after it, playing defense isn’t the way he likes to fight. Running after the demon he grabbed a throwing knife from inside his cloak, the small blade is made of the same black metal on the edge of his sword yet the entire blade is black. “Where are you running?!” He screamed after the demon who left trails of black smoke behind it. Robinson thrusted the blade forward with his left hand, it raced after the demon with crazy speed. Ripping through the trails of smoke and passing through the left part of its ripped cloak it shrieked in pain, quickly turning towards the right, trying to get out of Robinson’s throwing range but he stayed close behind, not allowing the demon to further their gap. The demon suddenly did a black flip in the air, diving head first on top of Robinson, the demon let out a menacing screech that would strike fear among most cadets or hunters but not squad leader 1, demon hunter Robinson. He swiftly lifted his left arm above his head, his dark red cloak fell back revealing his left arm that is covered by his lifeline. The radar screen was off, looking down at him next to the screen lined different buttons. The metal for the machine around his arm is the same black colored metal of his blade . Its darkness was deeper than usual as it faintly reflected the moonlight. “Shield!” Robinson yelled in a booming voice. A second after the word was yelled a metal slab emerged from the brace instantly expanding and forming a large shield. The chains slammed hard against the metal shield, completely securing Robinson from the attack. Following the failed chain attack the demon used its own force to push down upon the shield. This surprised Robinson, they usually stick to the tactic of attacking and flying back up but this one... its.. Different. He swung his sword over the shield and hit the side of the demon, shrieking from the sword hitting it, it pushed down harder, the shield pushing back forcing the sword down.

“Get the hell away!” Yelled Robinson but when he did out of the corner of his right eye he saw black smoke emerge, turning his head to glance for a moment a demon formed into the air close by. Letting out a menacing screech when it did and darting its attention to their battle. How is that possible!? He wondered, confirming his suspicion from earlier, there’s never been a demon who can rift, how can it?? He immediately shook the thoughts from mind when the demon who appeared flew towards them lifting their hands up. What the heck is it doing? He questioned. Then flames grew in its hands forming the shape of a ball, quickly reacting Robinson reached his sword over his shield as far as he could and stabbed the demon pushing down his shield, hoping he stabbed it in a vital area he turned his shield towards the other demon just in time as the fireballs that were once in the demon’s hands are now bursting into the shield. The impact of the two fireballs pushed Robinson back a little but what followed was a chain wrapping around his shield arm. Instantly the chains wrapped around several times covering his lifeline and grabbing hold of the shield. The other demon flew into the sky, and is what looks like reforming the stab wound. They shouldn’t be able to do that. How is that possible!? The demon swung the chain towards a tree, successfully slamming him into the hard bark. ” You’re going to need to do a lot more than that!” Robinson yelled, slamming his sword into the chain barely breaking the link. Stabbing his sword into the ground Robinson quickly grabbed another throwing knife from under his cloak, this one a bit longer than the last. The demon flew in the air in front of him but he stopped hovering in the air above, but Robinson didn’t wait for it to do anything; he stabbed at the chains and broke his shield free of the bondage. Quickly grabbing his sword with his right hand he stepped away from the demon readying his stance into his fighting position. But as he prepared another attack, before he could the demon did the strangest thing.Opening his cloak it revealed nothing but darkness and black smoke, it was weird to Robinson he figured they had a full skeleton body under the cloak or something. Then that’s when fire began to form and intense heat radiated from the core of the cloak, followed by screams. “Help!!!” “Help me!!!” “Please stop! Please!!” “I didn’t know!! Stop please!!” The screams were filled with pain and terror. A sensation of fear and wickedness bathed Robinson. He couldn’t help but drop to a knee, stabbing his sword into the ground for support from the heat and sensation. He thought he got out of range, but it’s so hot. It’s starting to feel as though my skin is burning itself. Thought Robinson, the thoughts of death lingered in his mind.

Then, as quick as the fire and heat grew, it died. The demon’s cloak closed, suppressing all the evil Robinson felt behind a ripped, ragged cloak. Robinson’s only thoughts as sweat drenched down his face was, Is this death? The demons wasted no time both thrusting a chain around both of his shoulders, they flew in front of him, Robinson made no effort to lift his sword or reach for any blades under his cloak. His shield would make no effort to block any attacks that the demons may try, defeat had compromised his integrity and willingness to fight. He witnessed death and had decided on making no effort to prevent what was to come. Realizing the demons are far more powerful than he’s ever seen or learned about.

Both chains began to tighten and wrap around his shoulders quickly tying around his biceps. They then both dove towards him, passing both sides of his shoulders. Entering the ground while pulling him behind them. Robinson felt a jolt as he felt his own body enter the ground. Darkness clouded his vision, as he was pulled a sharp pain sliced his arm, he felt the feeling of his lifeline be taken.
