Chapter One: The Unexpected Encounter

“Kemi, guess who just showed up at school!” Tolu’s voice sliced through the morning chaos, impossible to ignore. I squinted against the harsh morning sun and hoisted my backpack up.

“Spill it,” I said, my interest sparked as I wove through the crowd of students at Adefemi High.

“There’s a new guy,” she whispered, her excitement barely contained. “And he’s not like the usual crowd.”

I laughed. “When are you ever not on top of the rumors?” But I couldn’t deny it; Tolu’s excitement was catching.

As we headed to class, I found myself curious about this new guy. Little did I know, my world was about to flip upside down.

The bell rang, its shrill tone marking the start of another routine day. The halls filled with the familiar sounds of lockers clanging and friends reconnecting. I tried to concentrate on the chemistry test ahead, but Tolu’s earlier words haunted me.

“Kemi, aren’t you even a bit curious?” Tolu nudged me as we stepped into the classroom, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Maybe just a bit,” I admitted, scanning the room. No sign of anyone new—just the same faces, some lost in study, others lost in conversation.

The morning passed in a blur, and soon it was lunchtime. We joined the flow of students heading to the cafeteria, the air thick with anticipation.

And then I saw him.

He stood out, not trying to blend in, with a confidence that seemed out of place here. His eyes, an intense blue, met mine across the room. My heart skipped a beat; it was as if he knew I’d been looking for him.

“Kemi, that’s him!” Tolu hissed; her grip tight on my arm. “See? I told you he was different.”

I nodded, speechless. Different didn’t begin to cover it. There was something about him, a mystery that pulled me in. And as our eyes met, I knew nothing would ever be the same again.
