Chapter 1: The Proposal
Chapter 1: The Proposal
Ben sat at a shiny wooden table in the dimly lit diner, his heart beating against his ribs like a bird trapped in a cage, pleading for freedom. The air was thick with anticipation. He nervously looked at his watch for what seemed like an age as he waited for Olivia to arrive. The dappled light created dancing shadows on the clean white linen tablecloth, intensifying the eerie atmosphere.
Ben’s mind was full of the lines he had practiced over and over again, so every second seemed like it would never end. He reached into his pocket and felt the weight of the small satin box that was inside. Inside was a beautiful diamond ring that he had chosen just for Olivia as a sign of his love and devotion that would never end.
The restaurant door finally chimed softly to let everyone know Olivia had arrived. As Ben looked at her beautiful form against the warm light of the streetlights, his breath stopped in his throat. She wore a simple but beautiful dress that made her body look longer. Her hair fell over her shoulders in loose waves.
Ben called out, “Olivia,” as she got closer. His heart was beating fast. She was so beautiful that it shocked him. She had an air of refined refinement about her.
Olivia opened her eyes, gasping at what she saw, and Ben, dressed in his best, had a worried but hopeful look on his face. In the background, candles flickered slowly, adding to the mood.
Her voice was filled with admiration as she asked, “Ben?” “What’s all this?”
Ben took a deep breath to try to calm down, but his hands got sweaty as he did so. He looked forward to this moment for months, and now it had finally come.
Putting out his hand across the table to her and saying, “Olivia,” his voice was a little shaky. “I brought you here tonight because there’s something important I need to ask you.”
Olivia’s face changed from one of joy to one of fear as she watched Ben. Her eyes got bigger with excitement. As she waited for him to speak, she could feel her excitement; her heart was beating fast in her ears.
Ben took a deep breath to calm down and knelt down next to the table. His heart was racing as he looked up at Olivia with all the love and respect he could muster.
He whispered, “Olivia,” his voice shaking with emotion. When we met for the first time, my life changed in ways I never thought possible. You are the best thing in my life; you bring me happiness and love. You also help me through the bad times. Even though I’d rather not, I can’t picture my life without you. Are you sure you want to marry me?
Olivia stared at Ben in shock for a while, and time seemed to stop. Her mind was trying to make sense of the emotional storm that was going through her body. The weight of what he said lingered in the room, and she could feel what it meant in her thoughts.
Olivia’s face changed. It looked like she had just woken up from a dream; it turned into a look of horror and confusion. As she pulled away from Ben’s outstretched hand, she looked at him with wide eyes of confusion.
As it hit her, she whispered, “No,” and things made sense. “No, Ben, I can’t.”
Because Olivia turned him down, Ben’s heart broke into a million pieces as he watched her. It felt like someone kicked him in the gut. It caught him off guard to see how she would respond and how badly his well-laid plans would fail.
“What do you mean?” In an effort to understand what was going on, he asked, his voice shaking with pain. “Hi Olivia, I’d like to talk to you. “What is wrong?”
Olivia took her seat at the table and left the restaurant. Ben stood alone in the echoing silence of their dashed hopes, while Olivia remained silent, her eyes brimming with sorrow.
As the wind blew, a name carried all of Ben’s mistakes and regrets. As Ben sat there in shock and silence, his mind still spinning from Olivia’s rejection, an idea rose like a lighthouse in the night.
Hey, Sarah.
With all the pain and sadness he had caused, Ben felt the full force of the damage he had done. His past was coming back to haunt him in a terrible way. Being by himself in the empty café helped him understand that what he did had effects.
As the last sounds of his footsteps faded into the night, the diner stayed still, silently witnessing the broken hopes and dreams that Ben’s proposal had left behind. The soft glow of the dying candles lit the empty tables. The flames danced in the dark, like ghosts looking for a place to stay.
While Ben was going through a lot of trouble inside, the city outside was full of life. The headlights of cars going by cut through the darkness like compass beams. Even though the city was crazy, Ben couldn’t escape his own worries. All he could hear was the constant thump-thump-thump of them.
As Ben walked through the empty streets, he had a strong desire to remember better times, like when he was in love. But those times seem like faraway dreams now. Whenever he thought about Olivia, he could still hear her laugh and feel her smile, even when he was sad.
But she turned down his sincere request, and he could see and feel the betrayal and pain in her eyes. He felt a terrible sense of loss and hopelessness that he couldn’t get rid of after destroying his most valuable asset.
Without moving, Ben stood outside Olivia’s apartment building and thought. The cold night air stung his skin, and he looked up at the darkened windows above. He could feel her taking care of her wounds and cleaning them there, behind those walls.
He also felt a lot of pressure to make things right, whether that meant saying sorry to her or showing her that he was worthy of her love. He took a deep breath, straightened up, and walked up the steps to her front door. As he got ready to face her again, his heart was beating fast with excitement.
As he put out his hand to tap on the door, though, doubt crept in like a soft whisper. If she doesn’t want to see him, can we still meet? His name would have been hard to remember if she had already moved on.
Ben paused with his hand in the air and thought about his worries and fears for a moment. Then he pushed himself to knock with unshakable determination. His three sharp raps echoed through the dark night like a steady beat of determination.
While he waited for her response, Ben was ready to face whatever came next with courage and confidence. He realised that the battles we fight within ourselves are often the hardest. He also learned that the best way to make things right is to face our flaws and mistakes head-on, while keeping an open mind and a desire to grow.
Ben’s heart was racing as he got ready for what might happen next. Because that was the exact moment he knew he had to face the ghosts of his past directly.
