Chapter 1

Finally!

I got accepted into NJIT. Mom and Sriya would be so happy to hear this news.My dream of studying B.S. biomedical engineering at NJIT is going to come true. As much as I am excited, I have a small fear in my heart: what if mom changed her decision? What if she will not agree? I'm just overthinking. I should stop thinking negatively. With this thought, I clutched the bag in my hand. I hope the ice-cream hasn't melted in Bag.

As I was walking to my house from the icecream parlour, a group of friends were happily talking in a cafe. At that time, I gave a small, sad smile. As much as I was excited, I was a bit sad because I had no one to share my happiness except for my family. I only have a few friends; I actually have none. I also want to make friends and hang out with them, but I can't. Why? I also don't know. Every time I want to talk to someone, I get nervous. Unlike me, my older sister is a social butterfly. Everyone likes her. It's like she is a magnet who attracts with her speaking skills.

Not only is she good with people, but she is also an excellent student. It's like God gave her everything: beauty, intelligence, social skills, and friends. I am not blaming her, but truth be told, I am a little jealous of her.

My older sister, Sreya. She was applying to a few jobs, having recently graduated with a degree in computer graphics and animation. And I'm confident that a successful organization will hire her given her skills. And I'm confident that a successful organization will hire her given her skills soon, not if mom fixes her marriage. I'm not sure why mom is so determined that we get married quickly. I can't tell Mom anything, even though I know Didi doesn't want to get married anytime soon.

(Didi - sister)

In my class, everyone thought of me as a nerd who knew nothing about anything. Well, I can't blame them. But I'm not as clueless as they think. Unlike many of the students who were sad about leaving the school, I felt nothing. I was neither happy nor sad. Well, whatever it was in the past, now. Just as I was thinking, I came near my house.

Any one who looks at my attire while roaming in this locality will think I am probably a worker. Yeah, because this is such a upscale location with very posh buildings. Each building has more than five floors. And also some beautiful,high-class bungalows and mansions. Every time I enter this place, I feel out of place. I walked thoughtfully up to my house, which seemed even more out of place and unwelcome. But I like my house. It may not be the best, but it provided a roof for us when we needed it. And purchasing this house was perhaps the one good thing my father did in his lifetime.

As I opened the gate, it made a creaking sound. I entered and slowly closed the gate. As I entered the house, Preethi, my younger sister, was watching TV in the living room. "When did you return from school?" I asked her. "An hour or so, she said.

"Where is Didi?" I asked her. "She went to buy groceries" She spoke, her focus still on the TV. "Did you eat?" "Yes," she said.

"Oh, well, I brought ice cream for us", I said as I went into the kitchen and kept the ice box in the fridge. "Then let's eat", she said. "No, wait for Maa and Didi."She sighed as she said, "Okay". "Well, what's the occasion? she asked after we both settled on the couch. "It's a surprise," I said, giving her a small smile. "What is it, Didi?" She asked again. "Have patience, Preethi," I said jokingly. She keeps asking again and again, as she wants to know what it is.

Fifteen minutes later, I assumed Didi was back since I heard the gate open, and that's when Mom came inside. "Maa!" I called her excitedly. "What?" she asked haltingly, clearly worn out from her work. I grinned and exclaimed, "Maa, I have good news!" "Oh, what's that? She inquired, anticipating my response and smiling a little.

(Maa - mom)

"I got a seat in NJIT!" I told her about it. When I told her that, she grinned broadly. "Hey! That explains why you have such a radiant face." Preethi said , which made Maa and I both laugh."I will go and freshen up till then Sreya will return, and then we will celebrate," Maa said as she went into the bed room.
