Chapter 1
I have just received my graduation gift from my darling grandma, who raised me after my parents died. I knew i was never going to collage so i needed a life plan. I never really had much time for anything during my time at school because I filled my life with with so many extra activities that i did not have time to date.
Yes I was what my friends called a nerd because if I was not at chess club, I went to science club. I wanted to become a doctor but after failing to save my patents from the house fire I felt that i did not have it in me to deal with loss so I decided to try for a scholarship to become a scientist who could cure the world from its future of starvation. I joined the science club and together we came up with a genetically mutataed strain of corn that could withstand drought or disease. This was a science fair project and we created this by pure accident. We won the first place and then our idea was hijacked by some big corporation who apparently made a deal with the school and together they stole our accidental discovery and only our towns people knew the truth.
I was offered a full scholarship to the military academy of sciences and technology however I was still thinking about it. Grandma was in full support of whatever I decided to do. So studying with the military was one plan but collage was not part of my plan. The military scientist that spoke to me, showed me a possibility of endless ways to try and get to my goal of fixing the possible starvation crisis that even they themselves foresees and based on my work as the head team leader on my school project, they think they can replicate the accident. The only issue is, the corporation that stole our work does not know I had backed up my work on my personal laptop. I didn't tell anyone. So here is my problem. However the military told me they can modify the formula based on my work and improve on it that the seeds can grow in any environment and withstand anything the environment throws at it, including making it produce a natural bug repellent that does not compromise the actual corn.
At age 19, almost 20 I was considered to be a genius by those highly trained and brilliant scientists. So it was a strong possibility i would be joining the military. Grand was not going to like my choice but grand would support it. Now all that was left for me to do was to tell my friends and fellow science buddies that I would be joining the military. The science club guys already had their collages picked out and was due to leave to their respective schools next week. My friends however was planning a trip to the beach and then was taking off for their respective schools a week later. I was the only one who didnt have that plan.
I put on my best outfit and I went over to my best friends house so we could go together to the beach party. She was looking super cute in her outfit as well. She was in her driveway waiting by her car. I had to break the news to her first. She was not going to be happy and she might try and talk me out of it but still I had to tell her. " Hey baby girl, we are going to be late" Maddy said as she hugged me and then walked around to the drivers side. " I know, I had to sort out a few things for gran before I could leave for the evening" I replied as i climbed into the front passenger seat. "Maddy I have to tell you something, you are not going to like it but I need you to listen before we get to the beach party" Madfy gave me a concern look and then gestured gor me to go on. " So like you know how the school and that company took the science project away from us, well a few weeks ago, I received an email with an acceptance letter from the military science and technology school and well I am considering accepting it. And I have a meeting with them next week to discuss my acceptance" I took a breath after blabbering that all out. Just then the car came to a screeching holt and Maddie turned and looked at me with tears in her eyes. This girl could be an actress one day who specialises in crying because she can cry on demand if need be. " I am happy for you Chrissy." That was all she said before driving off. Where was a lecture or rage I expected from her. "Maddie are you ok?"
" Yeah... I mean no I am not ok Chris, I ....." And she stopped. " We are here, lets got and have a good time and we will talk later" before I could say anything, she jumped out the car. We walked in silence with me holding her all the way to the walk way and then she did a 360 and put on a smile and screamed at the others like nothing was wrong
